The Battle of Paris continues to dominate the news.
The WaPo reported that “Suspected mastermind of Paris attack died in police raid, officials confirm » The suspected mastermind of last week’s terrorist attacks that left at least 129 dead in Paris has been killed in a police raid, authorities here confirmed Thursday. The bullet-riddled body of Abdelhamid Abaaoud, a Belgian citizen of Moroccan origin, was found in the charred rubble of an apartment raided early Wednesday.
Got some problems with this. First, who can believe the police? Second, IF this was the guy that planned and executed these attacks, or one of them, he was no “mastermind.” No James Bond villain, but an idiot who frankly did not have to plan much at all, and clearly had NOT ONE THOUGHT as to how to carry out these attacks for maximum effectiveness.
Why do I say this? The death and wounded toll would have been FAR higher, given the weapons and time they had. The love of death and suicide to go to paradise is one thing, but experienced killers are a rare resource and not be be wasted. And a true, experienced terrorist would have realized that the “best” sort of terror attack takes place in multiple phases: the initial attack (in this case, inside the targeted facilities in the crowds), the second phase is to attack those crowds as they stampede out into the open, into perfect killing zones for guns, suicide bombs, or command-detonated bombs.
The third phase is to attack the first responders (the medical and fire, not the cops) as they respond, either bombing and shooting them AT the scene or at known chokepoints on the way TO the scene. The coordination required for this is not particularly difficult; mostly you need the manpower. Having six or more people INSIDE the venue was a foolish concentration of resources.
The fancy stuff comes in when you start using tactics like a Judas goat or mining the exits. But even THAT is simple enough that a relatively inexperienced infantry or engineer squad leader should be able to plan and execute it. And of course: they ran out of ammo! A huge killing field, lots of targets (although the high number of wounded versus dead indicates the typical Muslim “spray and pray” technique was probably used), and they barely got one out of thirty or more? And he let himself get caught so easily? Please.
No, this guy was NO mastermind: indeed, a typical stupid and lazy terrorist, no matter WHO or WHAT he was a tool of.
