Book Review: Herbal Medicine for Beginners

Review by MamaLiberty

By Katja Swift and Ryn Midura

Over the vast diversity of people who embrace natural health and nutrition, one of the wisest sayings (obscure origin) is that we do well to make our food our medicine. Herbs and many common food items comprise all the medicine most people actually need to be healthy.

On the other hand, those who would begin to experiment with actual herbs need to know what to expect, how to judge dosage, and be warned of any potential problems. Herbs are medicine, and many are quite powerful.

Unfortunately, very little modern research has been done on most common herbs, and there will be no definitive data about safety and potency until that happens.

This book is well organized, a good balance of medicinal information and cautions, and has a fair assortment of medicinal plants and foods. I was somewhat disappointed to find that a powerful food was not even mentioned, along with one herb I count on as a staple in my cupboard. So, add curry and oregano to the list you make to investigate more on your own.

I bypass the curry and go straight to the turmeric. It’s great for joint pain, although it takes a while to take affect. The thing to remember is to add it to something with which it can bind, so it won’t just flush out. I use a dash of course-ground black pepper in the capsules for just that.

I bought some straight turmeric, but can’t manage to take it. Tastes much too strong, even when put into capsules. Upsets my stomach. But I can use a little curry powder in quite a few things and enjoy it.
