This question came up on a web site recently, and we here at TPOL thought it worth sharing one of our staff’s responses. Yes, we know that once again we are bashing the People’s Republic of California and the idiots in power there – and the people who put them into power and refuse to accept that the State has failed and that failure is destroying a once beautiful, wealthy, and great State.
The answer: Only if California reduces its energy consumption by roughly 80% in the next six years – or if other States and Provinces embargo and refuse to sell power to California.
In other words, ain’t gonna happen.
California’s government is not going to be able to force generators of electrical power to invest the tens of billions of dollars it would take – especially if at the same time they continue to (a) tax those entities, (b) impose ever more draconian environmental, health, safety, and financial regulations on those entities, and (c) replace internal combustion engine vehicles with electric vehicles.
More and more firms and other entities of all types are fleeing California. They have seen the writing on the wall as California descending into worse than third-status and conditions. California is following the example of Argentina and now Venezuela. More and more people are sick of massive increases in taxes and costs directly caused by taxes, more and more mandates, and the increasing collapse of society in not just urban areas but more and more rural areas of the once-Golden State.
More and more people are also fleeing California. A situation which in many ways echoes the flood of migrants – border jumpers – across the Rio Grande, the Southwestern borders of NM, AZ, and CA itself, and the shores of the Gulf of Mexico.
Why? For the same reasons: taxes and other costs, insane regulations and micromanagement by all levels of government, and chaos. It is an unstable situation. A situation growing worse. And one which the people, the firms, the other entities of California appear incapable of solving.
The result will either be tyranny, followed by collapse, or just directly to collapse.
