Happy Columbus Day?

Today is the “rescheduled” Federal holiday of Columbus Day. In some States (in an “in appearance only” federalism that borders on mockery), it is “Native American Day” or “Indigenous Peoples Day” or some such. Many politicians (not just the Woke type) refuse to “celebrate” the day to show the “People of Color” their solidarity – or at least their sympathy. But those politician’s offices (their official ones, not their campaign offices, it seems) are nonetheless closed today for a Federal holiday.

And Columbus Day was traditionally on the 12th of October – the anniversary of Columbus’ arrival on an island in the Americas. Now, it is a floating holiday to ensure that government officials and employees get yet another holiday. (See also Juneteenth, Veterans Day, etc.) Many businesses offer the holiday off to their employees – though many small and customer-oriented businesses do not – and often cannot afford to. A matter of economics, not politics.

Columbus Day sales events are growing more rare – a political not economic decision. Except for those Woke businesses who fear that the Regressives will punish them for observing the day.

In the Black Hills, the weekend – and “Native American Day” – is the time of the He Sapa Wacipi Na Oskate: the Black Hills Powwow. (He Sapa is one of the alternative Lakota names for the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming – also traditionally called the Paha Sapa. Wacipi (pronounced WAH-CHE-PEE) is a Lakota word usually translated as “powwow.”) Thousands of people – including many Lakota, Dakota and Nakota (collectively the Great Sioux Nation or Seven Council Fires) – gather for contests of dancing, drumming, and other activities.

Local Woke businesses – and especially national and international firms with a local Black Hills presence, shovel a lot of money and effort to support this event. One such unnamed large national financial firm decided to indoctrinate their local employees with a “healthy dose” of DEI and have a few local Lakota personalities (perhaps even local celebrities in some eyes) tell of the history of their people.

What they did was lie. The coerced employees were told of the evils of colonialism – how white people are evil and stole the land from the Lakota. And how the Lakota’s “homeland” of the Black Hills – the He Sapa – had been the home of the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota (collectively the Ahkota) for eons. From prehistory on. Lies.

It is, however, a matter of recorded history and geography that the Lakota (not the Nakota or Dakota) did not reach the Black Hills until (AD) 1765. That was more than twenty years after a French military expedition visited (and claimed) the Black Hills in 1742. At the time of the French expedition (led by the famed Verendrye brothers and documented in French royal archives), the Lakota – and the rest of the Akhota, were all East of the Missouri River. Although the Cheyenne (courtesy of the Comanche) had introduced horses to the “Plains Ahkota” by that time, the large and powerful Arikara villages that controlled the fords across the Missouri prevented the Lakota from getting into the High Plains. But after disease weakened the Arikara, a man named Standing Bull led a Lakota (Saoni) war party across the West River of South Dakota and “discovered” the Black Hills. According to winter counts (pictographic historical records) of the Lakota themselves.

It was then that the Lakota began a ten-year-long war of conquest for the Black Hills and the rich buffalo pastures of the Great Plains around them, ultimately driving the Kiowa and Arapahoe and Cheyenne people to the West and South, after two significant defeats in battles on the edge of the Black Hills in 1776. Notably, the Lakota did not seek to drive French trappers and traders out of the newly conquered territory. And only the seven bands of the Lakota moved into the area around the Black Hills: the Dakota remained primarily in Minnesota and extreme eastern North and South Dakota, and the Nakota in eastern North and South Dakota and Nebraska. (Note: all modern names of the lands.)

The Lakota, French records, and archeological and cultural resource records indicate that the Ahkota were driven out of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa by a number of other tribes, including Cree and Chippewa (Ojibwa). And may have been as far east as Kentucky and Virginia as late as the 1400s or 1500s: well before any significant “colonialist” pressures in eastern North America.

But that is too politically-incorrect for modern “Native American” and Lakota activists like the LandBack Movement and the NDN Collective: two Regressive organizations that Woke corporations embrace. These are the less-violent but more extreme successors to the AIM – American Indian Movement of the 1970s.

All of this history reminds us that the victors write the histories, and then the propagandists explain the history. And warp it and lie about it. The lies about the history and origins of the Lakota and their sister nations serves the purpose of the modern Regressives who seek to destroy the reputation, morale, and legitimacy of the United States of America and its member States.

Why? Because despite the deep flaws of these States, the cause of liberty on this planet has benefited greatly from the federal Union and the impact on world events. Despite the serious damage caused by the cupidity and stupidity of American politicians and the subservience of Americans in general.

The modern Lakota activists and advocates themselves are seriously contaminated by the socialism and worship of human government that troubles the entire world. Again, to quote a well-known Man: “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
