As you read this, it is now at least 24 hours since the polls closed on “the most important election in our lifetimes” according to pundits and celebrities of all political flavors. Whether we believe that or not, whether all the races are resolved or not, we take a certain pleasure in having made it this far. If nothing else, most of the ads will stop. The mailboxes will be emptier, the neighborhood corners and empty lots will start to get cleaned up.
As we are writing this, we have no idea who won where. No idea where there were protests, riots, gunfire, bombings, concessions, or claims one way or another.
But we do suspect that virtually all of the people alive when we wrote this early on election morning are still alive this Post-Election Day evening as this is posted.
We are reasonably certain that neither China nor Russia nor Iran (nor France nor Israel) has launched a nuclear or chemical attack – much less an invasion against one or more of the States. If anything, the rest of the world will take a deep breath and be grateful for an end too. And no doubt be glad that Americans can go back to making things for, and buying things from, the rest of the world.
Nor are we too worried that the Woke social justice warriors (or the fascist stormtroopers) in American uniform have declared martial law and started rounding up people from another corner of the political diamond. Then either deporting them or throwing them into ovens or re-education camps. Really. And we are fairly certain that none of the celebrities who made the traditional threat of moving to Europe or Canada if Candidate X wins will have called the movers.
But we also know that government will keep inflating the prices on the economy. That government will continue to spend far, far beyond its means. That government will continue to impose and enforce tyrannical enactments. That criminals in and out of government will continue to prey upon their fellow man.
So please, take a deep breath, man. Stand straight, lady! THE WORLD HAS NOT COME TO AN END, no matter who won. No matter what initiatives passed or referendums failed. No matter who (or what party) cheated.
Government and politics is not the whole of life – or of society. Or even of our economy. Depending on who and what won and lost, we may have to work harder. We may have fewer luxuries (or more). We may have more liberty or less – at least on a large scale. But as Harry Browne said, we can live free in an unfree world. And more importantly, as Jesus said, we shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. Whether that truth is good or bad, pleasant or not.
No doubt, all or most of our readers – and our readers’ neighbors and families – will suffer some disappointment. And even a few some joy. But we can all have hope for the future. And maybe even some peace, within if not without.
The futures so bright I’ve got to wear shades!
