A lot of folks are up in arms about The Donald’s nomination of Pete Hegseth as SecDef (Secretary of Defense). MAJ Pete Hegseth, an Army National Guard officer with combat service in Afghanistan and Mesopotamia (Iraq).
Many of those freaking out and demanding the Senate reject Hegseth are denizens of the infamous military-industrial complex. And incredibly Woke, to boot. Woke for purely pecuniary reasons: they want to get that FedGov money as much as possible: they are all too often welfare recipients: warfare welfare types.
As we have seen for the last month, the old truism “Elections have consequences” is once again being proven. This time by The Donald.
Those elected “Massa” of these united States (POTUS) have always made it clear that they intend to push through their programs, whether the other high mucky-mucks in government like it or not. Some succeeded; others wimped out or were emasculated and failed. Theoretically, winners can do what they want to do. If they have and spend the political capital to do so.
At this point, it appears that The Donald has both the drive (the guts!) and the political clout to do just that. He won on 5 November in what even the bitterest of never-Trumpers and most regressive and Woke of Democrats and RINOs have to admit was a landslide. Not just a strong majority of electoral votes, but the popular vote as well. In a formerly Federal union that demonstrated its growing divisions more and more. And his party took control of both the US Senate and the US House of Representatives.
So not only are Democrats quaking in their slippers, but even some Republicans. (As shown by the relatively weak outcry by many GOP types about his appointments.) And it appears that Trump has learned some lessons from his many failures in his first term. (Something that the historians tell us Grover Cleveland really did not, in his split terms.)
Indeed, so far the only appointee that has died on the vine is the boy wonder Matt Gaetz of Florida. And we wonder if that was not an intentional sacrifice by Trump to get another, probably even more effective, Attorney General into play.
MAJ Pete Hegseth is a different sort of cat. Yeah, he has the personal morals of an alley cat. But he is a combat veteran with service in Iraq and Afghanistan, winner of two Bronze Stars and graduate of Princeton and Harvard. (Unlike Austin, he was in combat as a junior officer – Lloyd Austin’s only combat tour was as an Assistant Division Commander and Division Commanding General – not exactly down in the mud (or sand) and blood.) Hesgeth is well-qualified in the eyes of many – especially his fellow company grade and lower field grade officers and the NCO Corps. But he is not a conventional choice. Because he is not and was not a “political officer” (kiss-up). He did not surface from the muck of the swamp of the military-industrial complex. He fiercely opposes Woke policies. He claims (correctly in our opinion and that of many more) that these policies have and are weakening our military: and not just hurting enlistments. It appears that he is determined to force retirement/resignation of a whole bunch of brass hat generals and admirals. The political sort – like Austin. The kind who are more interested in political correctness than they are in combat readiness or living up to their oath of office and warrior ethos. And it seems that Hesgetj will have a lot of help in that effort.
Call it what you will: purge does not always mean stupidity and cupidity on the part of those doing the purging.
First, we have that horrible nightmare of bureaucrats and bootlickers of government: the Department of Governmental Efficiency, or DOGE. Not only is it not actually a government agency, but it appears to be shaping up as an antiseptic which will kill much of the pests – and parasites – that FedGov agencies are.
But The Donald’s minions include a “Warrior Board.” Unfortunately, that is not a bunch of hard-muscled fanatics practicing their beheading skills with a claymore on a chopping block in the courtyard of the Pentagon. But that group will systematically review senior officers (Flag Officers: generals and admirals) to identify those who are overly political, woke or supported former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (Mark Milley) and Lloyd Austin (the current SecDef).
We hope and suspect that many will be forced out. And very quickly. Not only is this great for morale of soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, Guardians, and even Coasties and NOAA and PHS/IHS types. It will also provide space in those highest ranks to promote Majors and Colonels. Not “deserving” ones, but ones who know the art and science of war and know and care for their people and their loyalty to the Constitution, not to political leaders and allies and their wallets. The ones that have studied and learned about what has to be done when the politicians screw everything up and it takes men (and women) in dirty, wrinkled, and worn blue and grey and khaki and olive drab to try and fix the mess. Men and women who believe in – and practice – liberty and dedication: responsibility and accountability. People like the ones who returned from Europe to Athens in 1946 and cleaned out yet another flavor of tyranny in Tennessee like the ones that DC had helped create in Germany and Japan.
Oh, yes, elections definitely have consequences. And prayerfully, this one will have at least a few of the right kind of consequences. Let us help roll back the military-industrial complex and its stranglehold on these States and the world. Proclaim liberty throughout the land!
