NATO? War drums beating louder…

Do we need NATO? Do we want NATO? Is NATO a good thing? Today, in 2024?

As Uncle Joe and various European and Brit leaders double down on supporting the corrupt tyranny of Ukraine against the corrupt tyranny of Russia, these are important questions. NATO is both the tool of such meddling as well as an instigator of the situation who lets the meddling happen. And it therefore behooves us to question the organization itself.

The NATO secretary-general has instructed NATO members to cut spending on social services and divert the money to military spending.  This is likely to be ignored: the hometown voters are not going to accept austerity until such time as panzers with red stars and “Z” on them are ripping down the autobahn towards them. (Which, we submit, isn’t that likely, unless the bear-baiting soars even more.)

Even though the current crop of European leaders are the spiritual descendants of the powerful people who neutered the males of Germany, France, etc. (with a rusty table knife, to boot), they are frustrated because they have decided to push forward.

Forward? Indeed, into Ukraine, Belarus, Russia’s near neighbors in Central Asia.

Security matters more than social welfare, said the secretary-general, and Europe must prepare to defend itself from aggressive Russia.  Of course, it is Russia that is failing to defend herself and her allies from the aggressive West. (It is disgusting to us to see a so-called “democratic movement” which is really a bunch of Islamist terrorists taking over from a relatively secular tyrant with the blessings of the West: like celebrating Lenin’s rise to power to ultimately replace the Tsar’s rule.)

It is true that it has been an imperative of Russian policy (not just its foreign policy) to try and secure defensible boundaries. A bitter lesson of centuries of invasions, and not just the Huns and Mongols from the east. Russians are paranoid, and all the West seems to do these days is feed that paranoia.

Western propaganda both benefits from that paranoia and uses it to their own ends: the accession of both Finland and Sweden to NATO being the great reward for vilifying and terrifying Russia. Almost 80 years after the defeat of the National Socialists and a resurgent (and vengeful) Germany aggressing against virtually every nation in Europe, it is those nations (with Germany) who now seem to be intent on imposing their systems on anyone and everyone else.

Stronger Together? This little piece of propaganda was published not long ago: “Seventy-five years on, the NATO alliance is as strong and critical as ever, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said. Speaking at the recent NATO Summit in Washington, D.C., Austin said the U.S. military continues to deepen ties with its allies in Europe and around the world.

Citing his 41-year Army career, Austin said he has worked with NATO since 1975. “I learned a lesson early in my Army career, and that lesson is that as a soldier, the last thing that you want to do is fight alone,” he said. “So, here’s the blunt military reality. America is stronger with our allies. America is safer with our allies. And America is more secure with our allies.”

Like all human institutions, military alliances decay and grow corrupt: NATO served an important role for 45 years, despite its many faults. But for the last 30+ years, it has grown into another tool for tyranny. Perhaps a compassionate and kinder tyranny – a nanny state – but still a tool for parasites and predators on other humans.

It is rumored that The Donald is talking about getting the FedGov (and therefore, the States) out of NATO. It is unlikely, honestly, that he will succeed, no matter how “conservative” and even “libertarian” some members of Congress are. But is it not indeed an idea which time has come?
