Libertarian Commentary, #16-12A, By Nathan Barton
DC politics makes us sick, and there is no sign it is going to change in the next months or years. Right now, in the heat of “election season” it is particularly vile and disgusting. Yet, we can’t help but pay attention. Here are a few stories from this weekend. Be sure if you throw up not to ruin your keyboard.
Now that the guy at 1600 has nominated a new Nazgul to take the ninth chair, Next News Network says that everyone is bracing for an “ugly” Supreme Court nominee fight. The Congressional GOP has already started its predictable compromise process, selling out what they claim to stand for. It is more nauseating because it seems as if they are doing this sort of thing on purpose.
Will it make a difference? Whether this guy Garland or someone else ultimately is seated? Yes, it will, but we cannot know exactly HOW it will: this guy’s decisions cannot be known. The real problem is not who is deciding, but the fact that the Supremes have just too much power. This is power that was NOT (apparently) intended to be granted that court by the framers, but rather was grabbed in a secondary coup by Marshall and others. It damaged the republic badly.
The PRESENT Nazgul made another headline today, as reported in the Durango Herald, they rejected the lawsuit by Nebraska and Oklahoma to overturn Colorado’s legalizing recreational cannabis without any comment. This would seem to me to be either a slap in the face to Congress or a point made to get Congress to wake up and get rid of immoral and unconstitutional laws. But then, that would be SO unlike the Nazgul that I’m sure I’m wrong.
Is there anyone more gross and disgusting when it comes to politics than Charles Rangel – in Congress, at least? World Net Daily tells us that Rangel, D-N.Y., one of the Democratic Party’s most left-leaning liberals, expressed concern about the future of the Republican Party during a recent radio interview, saying the GOP needed to save itself – in order to preserve his own party. Ugh. I’d like to think that BOTH old parties will implode, but I am sure that Rangel will prove to be wrong.
Meanwhile as Congress and the parties tear themselves apart, the squatter at 1600 goes out on another jaunt, this time a vacation in Cuba according to CNS News. His timing is great. Not only were NEITHER of the Castros able to meet him at Havana for this “historic” trip (what, they didn’t want to bask in his fame?), but the Communist government had just rounded up a bunch of dissidents, detaining them (maybe to prevent THEM from grabbing onto the visitor’s fame?). Frankly, it wouldn’t hurt my feelings for him and his entourage to just STAY in the wonderful land of Cuba. Of course, the snubbing may just be theatrics. I wouldn’t be surprised if Raul and his guest aren’t sitting down to talk over not just giving Guantanamo back, but throwing in the southern half of Florida, getting RID of oodles of GOP voters in time for November AND sending all those Cuban refugees BACK to Cuba, to boot.
