Ryan McMaken at Mises.org recently discussed an FBI report about declining rates of homicides in the Fifty States. Despite the wave of mass killings in the last 7.5 years (while a certain squatter has been officially in DC), and despite the growing numbers of weapons on the streets, the kill rate is DROPPING. This demonstrates, as the Mises article notes, that the United States has not entered into some sort of horror-movie suicide pact and can only be saved by removing constitutional protections for the God-given right to defend ourselves with firearms and other weapons.
But there are more things to note. There are two charts, one showing that the homicides per 100,000 population have been dropping for the past 25 years and are at the lowest level since 1957: virtually my entire life! The second, though, is equally enlightening. A quick addition indicates that about 130 MILLION “new” guns (manufactured and imported) have been added to American society in the past 20 years (1994-2013). That is almost one for every 2 Americans. And FAR far different from claims that only one out of (take your pick) ten or twenty or fifty American homes have guns. Because when you consider that there were already several hundred million guns privately owned by Americans prior to 1994, there are likely at least one gun PER American found in private hands: add a couple of million in the hands of government employees and military and we are one heavily armed nation. It points out the absurdity of claiming that a state like South Dakota only has 11 guns per 1,000 residents (made on a mainstream media website a few months ago). And yes, I know that many of us have more than one gun: indeed, often large collections. But I also know how many guns just in individual families have been owned by those families for generations and are in NO ONE’s data base.
Keep in mind that, since 1945 (end of the Second World War), the population of the Fifty States has doubled, and even since the 1960 census, we are up from 180 million to 320. So even with the homicide rate dropping by half or more, the same number of people are getting killed. This is not a good thing, but it is life (and death). People die.
What is clear is that more guns do NOT equal more deaths, or a higher death rate. No matter what the government, no matter what progressives, claim. This is made clear in yet another way: more and more of the homicides by gun are concentrated in certain cities, certain urban areas, and specific socio-economic groups: as we saw last (Labor Day) weekend in Chicago. As you can see from ANY map showing the death rates in various states, and even more in various counties. The more heavily armed areas (counties and states, especially rural and frontier) are becoming MORE peaceful.
It is a lesson we need to remember, even though we know that government and the hoplophobes and hoploclasts (gun-fearers and gun-haters) will never learn it.
What can we do?
First, never believe the propaganda put out by the hoplophobes and hoploclasts, the liberals and and all their ilk.
Second, teach your family – especially your children and grandchildren – the truth about guns, their uses, and the God-given right of self-defense.
Third, make it clear to your local officials – whether elected, appointed, in uniform or not – that guns and gunowners are GOOD for, and essential to, the community.
Fourth – train, practice, and use your weapons well.
Fifth – protect your weapons so that they will be available to protect you.
I am sure that Mama Liberty and readers can add more!
Mama’s Note: Oh yeah! Here is a story from San Bernardino in Southern California. I worked in that city (living elsewhere) for many years, and it was a dangerous place when I left in 2005.Gangs and gang warfare was common then, and appears to have gotten even worse. The company I worked for had a seriously terrible “no weapons/no guns” policy, so I worked for 14 years basically helpless to defend myself. It came close many times… and someday I’ll write that story.
All the same problems, and all of the same idiot things they think are
answers. Not a single WORD in this long article suggesting that people
themselves be ready, willing and able to defend themselves and their
property. It is truly sickening to see that San Bernardino has gotten even worse in some ways than Chicago!
More “cops,” more “laws” and more political meddling is obviously not the answer. That’s what they’ve been doing for more than 50 years. Insanity is doing the same thing, over and over, expecting different results. They are all insane.
