Today is Super Bowl Sunday. It is also Groundhog Day. And it is the day before the official start of 2020 Political Circus – supposedly to elect the next Massa. And three days before Senate Impeachment Vote Wednesday.
They are of course, related. Disgustingly so. Pointing out the poverty of spirit and the lack of liberty and freedom in the Fifty States, compared to what we could have, if we had not thrown so much of it away. (Or to continue to use biblical concepts, given away our birthright for a bowl of beans.)
Right now, as I finish this, one of the biggest concentrations of millionaires in the world is taking place at Chiefs Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.
Millions of fans watching elsewhere are often forsaking what they would claim is their own religion’s worship assembly to instead worship the game of American Football and the all-too-human players. Who will win? The extravaganza is designed to maximize benefits to the merchants (funding it with consumer dollars). And of course, this worship session is made more enjoyable by the sensual and sexual antics, and the obnoxious, rude, and often profane behavior of the entertainers: players, cheerleaders, AND halftime celebrities.
While stuffing themselves with the delights of junk food and booze, the viewers can wash their brains with billions of dollars of Super Bowl advertisements. Selling everything they don’t need – and a hefty dose of Regressive, Tranzi propaganda.
We can leave this aspect of modern, rapidly devolving American culture to turn to the next episode of Bread and Circuses – which also has its own share of idolatry. That is Caucus Monday in the great flyover State of Iowa. This year, with the GOP firmly welded to Trump (however much that is hated by the likes of Romney and all the never-Trumpers), we only have half the usual spectacle.
This may be the most interesting and fascinating show the Dems have put on for quite a bit. Given the 2016 race, RussiaGate, UkraineGate, and now the Impeachment Reality Show, that is saying a lot. Supposedly just one will win – at least for a while. And we still have five or six months of squabbling, yelling, and backbiting to go to see who is “the” winner of the race to remove Trump from office.
Ah, but which one?
- The corrupt former vice president, whose gaffes grease his campaign trail, who confesses his evil, and can’t keep his lies straight?
- The former Navy officer whose duty consisted of doing a lot of driving around (after getting a direct commission), and probably won’t even carry the vote in the town of which he is mayor?
- The fake AmerInd with all the sob stories; a dyed-in-the-wool socialist without taking that name?
- The real, self-identified Socialist who isn’t even a member of the Democratic Party?
This would be kind of like having the Super Bowl played as a four-way game by selecting the best high-school teams from the four largest states (that would be California, New York, Florida and Texas, I think). Guaranteed to be a howler, but shocking and sacrilegious to the worshipers of the game – and gangs which play it.
Indeed, from the various mostly sane and rational Democrats I know and hear from, they think the spectacle in Iowa (and everyplace else the Dem candidates have been) is pretty sacrilegious and even disgusting. Of course, those Democrats are not representative of the rank-and-file of their party. To say nothing of the leadership.
The mainstream Democratic Party leaders and activists in most states – even in conservative ones like South Dakota, Wyoming, and Utah – remind me of those priests of Ba’al that Elijah taunted there on Mount Carmel.
So the prophets took the bull that was given to them and prepared it. They started praying to Baal and prayed until noon. They said, “Baal, please answer us!” But there was no sound. No one answered. Then they began jumping around on the altar they had built.
27 At noon Elijah began to make fun of them. He said, “If Baal really is a god, maybe you should pray louder! Maybe he is busy. Maybe he is thinking about something, or maybe he stepped out for a moment! He could be sleeping! Maybe you should pray louder and wake him up!” 28 So the prophets prayed louder. They cut themselves with swords and spears. (This was the way they worshiped.) They cut themselves until they were bleeding all over. 29 The afternoon passed but the fire still had not started. The prophets were out of control and continued to act this way until the time came for the evening sacrifice. But nothing happened—there was no answer from Baal. There was no sound. There was no one listening.
The Democrats who are worshiping before the altars of Biden, Buttigieg, Warren, and Sanders (and those godlings like Gabbard, De Blasio, etal.) are going to receive as little for their efforts. All the shouting and dancing and bleeding money to pay for ads and all the rest will NOT light a fire under Trump. Nor will all that work solve a single problem facing the Fifty States.
Just as it seems as though the Impeachment Joke will fall flat on its face. They’ve already garbled ALL the punchlines.
I’m not saying that the GOP is any better off – nor that Trump himself is a worthy object of devotion, if not actual worship. All the politicians, just like all the celebrities (including those in football uniforms as well as Hollywood and Nashville and the rest), are just inanimate objects: idols not even made out of stone or bronze. Rather, made out of clay. Poorly-fired clay at that.
Just like the outcome of today’s Super Bowl is virtually meaningless (except for the sellers of a few products and the ad executives who will make fortunes), so too are the results of Caucus Monday and Impeachment Senate Vote Wednesday.
From what I hear, the halftime show indeed fit the bread and circuses theme, with a lot of Roman depravity and child exploitation thrown in. Any #MeToo there? Epstein would have loved it.

“Bread and Circuses” that is what destroyed Rome.

Sportsball has been an interesting thing for decades. As you mention – “Bread and Circuses”, indeed.
Puppy Bowl is better anyway, at least my dogs are entertained for a few hours.
