A few more thoughts about the American army and restoring liberty

The United States Army on its 248th birthday is a far cry from the force which ultimately (admittedly with French Ancien Regime army and navy help and that of the fledgling American Navy and Marine Corps) made things so miserable on this side of the Atlantic that London gave up. (South of the St. Lawrence, at least.) As is the 2023 version of the US Army as compared to that force in WW1, WW2, and most other wars.

Recently, a former Sergeant Major of the US Army was quoted in a newsletter:

“Soldiers are [supposed to be] the guardians of freedom, liberty, and the sacred values and
trust of the American people and our nation.” – SMA Glen E. Morrell

In 2023, the original statement perhaps has never been less true. Even with the bloodsucking leadership of the low-life types in DC, the Army in the past tried to live up to SMA Morrell’s words. But today?

Consider this commentary a follow-up on the recent writing about the Woke Army.

Today, as in the past, the entire US military is subordinate to the civilian authorities of the DC Regime, both the White House (Commander-in-Chief and his blasted bureaucracy in the Pentagon) and Congress. Especially Congress. It has been that way for more than two centuries, since the Continental Army was established on 14 June 1775. Congress, whether Continental or modern, has always made the most of that. And more than once they have corrupted and destroyed the Army.

For the author of this commentary, that has often been a frustration, because the United States Army Corps of Engineers has been hated, condemned, and blamed for thousands of actions with environmental impacts, for most of that time. The Corps is blamed for all kinds of environmental damage as though the leadership and the officers, NCOs, and civilians of the Corps have gone out and built dams and levees and canals and even nuclear weapons and power stations on their own initiative. When in reality, the Corps has pretty much exactly what it was ordered to do by whoever was in the Oval Office, his minions, and the pork-barrel generators of the Senate and House of Representatives.

Now, I am not saying that the old German defense of “befehl ist befehl” (orders are orders) should be used to defend the American military. And in the defense of the Corps of Engineers, most of the projects Congress ordered and funded did not have clear and obvious moral issues. (Sadly, some did, and those who followed what are immoral and probably illegal orders must be seen as responsible for not refusing to carry out the orders of Congress.) A key aspect of any effort – and one ignored by virtually all human governments – is the moral duty to challenge your bosses when they want to do something that is wrong. All too often, American military leaders have failed to do so to Congress and the White House, let alone the Secretary of the Army and Secretary of Defense (and the Secretary of War before 1947).

We cannot, of course, call for accountability on those men and women of the past and no longer on this earth. That is in the Hands of God. (Despite what modern Woke social justice warriors believe and are trying to do.) But we can and must learn from the past. Military loyalty can NOT be to Congress or to the President – or indeed, ANY person. But only to the Constitution and its principles. Anything else leads ultimately to tyranny and slavery.

This is where the current Woke Army (and other branches of military service – even the Public Health Service and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) is destined today. If this goes on.

So what can be done? It is tempting to say that a military coup is one possible solution. But from the point of view of a serving commissioned officer and a lover of liberty, it is not. All such would do is hasten the loss of liberty and freedom. Probably not just for these States but for the world. No matter how badly the current Chinese imperium is tottering, no matter how shaky the Russians are, no matter how Woke the Europeans are or how fanatically mad the Islamists are, such a thing would be a gift from Satan himself to them. They might not hold it together but one or all of them together would certainly the demise of American independence (but not our civilization) for decades.

That is, of course, NOT a gift my sons and I want to leave their children and grandchildren. So what?

The solution is to take away the power – and as much as possible, take away – or neutralize – the people who currently exercise that power. By non-military methods. Not necessarily non-violent, but not military. Not even “unorganized militia” except in the very broadest sense that everyone age 14-70+ belongs to the militia. Militias are for defense: offensive action against the pieces of work in both old parties must be non-violent, and violence limited strictly to defense against their aggressive action to keep power – and gain more power.

Bad as things are today in society and politics, We still are much better off in many ways than we were fifty or sixty years ago. Not only has technology given us means to resist and regain liberty, but the traditions that the likes of FDR and LBJ and RMN depended on have mostly been shattered. And the minions that they once depended on to shore them up have been weakened and almost destroyed by their own actions. The FBI, the bureaucracy, the judiciary. And yes, the Army.

Lovers of liberty do not need to destroy the Army – that is being done in front of us. We need to pick up the pieces and restore, not reform, it to something like what SMA Morrill speaks of.

Yes, it is. The answer, or response. And not the question. God gave us the ability and His approval to defend ourselves and others. Initiating violence against others is not moral. Not to say that we always have to use violence to defend ourselves, for it should be considered a last resort. But sometimes…
