A few weeks back, a report at Business Insider tells us that some “pastor” participating in the Florida State government takeover of formerly somewhat-anonymous Disney World has quoted the Bible telling people “not to resist authority” even while government “strips worker’s park perks.”
Of course, to strip anyone’s perks – read “rights” – in business is verboten in today’s world. But even worse, this guy is claiming authority from the Bible for doing that. (Well, sort of: the headline is exaggerating this guy’s statement, as can be seen in the body of the story.)
In today’s world, we here at TPOL often seem that we are constantly whaling on so-called Liberals and Progressives. But our disdain for the so-called Conservative and Religious Right political philosophy is equal to that we have for the Regressives. And this guy, this so-called “pastor” is a classic example of why. Not only is he an idiot, but he is a thug and supporter of tyrants and worse. And he is in no way a “man of God” who preaches the truth.
Please understand. We here at TPOL don’t like the idea of government coming in and taking over private business. Even Disney. At the same time, we consider Disney to be as bad – even worse – than government in what it does to people. Woke Social Justice Warriors hardly fits the company. It ran Disney World (and its other attractions) like the worst of Southern antebellum plantations. (Disclaimer: never been to a Disney theme park: never intend to.)
We don’t support government telling companies like Disney what they can and cannot pay, what perks their employees (and managers and owners) can and cannot give. That is between employers and employees to agree to. It is wrong for government to do that.
But this guy seems to think that the Creator gave “government” some kind of blank check – that no one: people, families, employees, customers, employers are to “resist authority.”
This thug-worshipper is twisting the Word of God. In Romans 13, Paul is stating God’s criteria for human government to be at least tolerated by Him. Only if government meets these criteria (among which are punishing evildoers and praising people who do good things) is it worthy of being obeyed. Provided, of course, that the government does not demand something that is contrary to God’s will, something does not belong to government, or causes undeserved harm to people.
Which of course disqualifies 99.9999% of human governments (I’m being conservative). So we are left with Jesus’ teaching to basically count the cost and choose our priorities: obey if the order is acceptable in God’s eyes, and nothing more.
Like so many people over the years, this guy seems to believe that it is right for some people – a God-given right at that – to lord it over other people and to let tyranny fester. People like him give religion a bad name. And try to deny the true nature of the God they claim to preach.
The governor and legislature of Florida have no more God-given right to abuse Disney as a company, its directors, its employees or their customers (tourists – guests) than you or I do. At least not according to the Bible – or to the beliefs of any free market anarchist. Or most minarchists.
Whether you are a believer in the God of the Bible, or not – can you see any reason to support this man and his warped view of freedom, liberty, society, and the rights of men and women?

God, government, religion, and Disney World?
