You were our countrymen – the limits of evil

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace.  We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.” (Samuel Adams, August, 1776)

A major story last week, for certain elements of the press, was from Massachusetts.

Massachusetts has eliminated its statutory gestational limit on abortion. Previously required specific conditions for abortions at or after 24 weeks were taken away. This was done by the majority vote of both houses of the legislature (119-33 and 15-4), signed into law by the governor (with smiles and applause). Under the new law, an abortion may be performed at any gestational age based on the “professional judgment” of the physician. Of course, residents of Massachusetts are free to switch physicians at any time: if their usual medical provider is unwilling to use their “professional judgment” to approve killing the unborn child, they can go find another one.

Like Colorado, we are sure that Mass has lots of medical doctors who have and will betray their oath. For as the graphic shows, Mass is not alone: ten States and that true hive of infamy and evil, the District of Criminals, say it is fine to kill your unborn child up to 9 months. Including the due date.

What is, by the way, a “late abortion” for our commentary? It means an abortion performed after fetal viability: after the child can live (even with help) outside the mother’s womb. In the case of a healthy mother carrying a healthy, viable fetus, the now-legal procedure is not simply a means of ending the pregnancy: delivery would also end the life of the unborn child. What distinguishes an abortion in that circumstance? It is intended to end the pregnancy without a live birth: to kill a child.

A labor and delivery nurse (over 30 years experience) described it this way:

After 24 weeks, it’s not an abortion. It’s a delivery. At that point, the safest option for the mother is delivery, not an abortion, and many OB/GYNs have said that. An abortion up to 40 weeks is not about the woman’s health or saving her life. After 24 weeks, they can deliver the baby, and that is the safest way to protect the mom. If she doesn’t want the baby, she can always give it up for adoption. You must have a lot of hate in you to do this. This isn’t about our president or women’s rights. This is about people trying to kill children.

This makes sense to us, and from the point of view of a lover of liberty, we fail to see any other way to interpret this. We don’t necessarily agree that all expectant mothers who consent to an abortion of the child they are carrying have “a lot of hate” in them. They are brainwashed, they are made fearful, they are selfish and do not have love in them – or not enough of the right kind. But the hate? We see that in the people who carry out the abortions. The people who voted in the legislature. The governor and those who praise this kind of action.

And these people proclaim, crow about, how this is all about liberty. About the freedom of women, freedom to choose, freedom over their own bodies. True, Mass and the other States do not force women to abort their babies. They let fear “persuade them” – fear of husbands or boyfriends, fear of family rejection, fear of financial loss. Even fear of not being able to “enjoy” life being “saddled” with an unwanted child. The haters? Is it too extreme to ask if it is children that they hate, or the “race” or “ethnicity” of the child? Or something else that encourages and underlies the hate towards a tiny, unknown human being they’ve never met, who poses no threat? Looking back at Sam Adams’ quote, it is not just wealth that causes people to reject liberty.

And it sickens us. It makes a mockery of everything about government and what it is claimed to represent and to support. Although we do not agree, we can understand those who claim that a child in the womb who is not viable is not “human.” (Understand, but not support or agree with or encourage. We think they are seriously wrong.)

As we started out stating, Massachusetts is not alone among the 50 States in declaring that it is okay (with a doctor’s agreement) to kill. To kill an unborn, innocent child who is viable, able to be born (delivered) and live. Who presents no true threat to their mother, or at least her health.

This is monstrous. This is evil. This is falsely labeled liberty when in reality it is the opposite: active, premeditated violent and fatal aggression against an innocent person. It is, actually, close to slavery. (If actually worse: we submit that killing someone is worse than just enslaving them.)

That is why we quote Sam Adams at the start of this commentary. These ten States, and any which join them, in legalizing the murder – the premeditated murder – of unborn and viable children have created chains and denied the very liberty for which this union of nations was established. They must be, as Adams said, forgotten that they were once our countrymen.

For if we continue to embrace those who murder children as our countrymen, we are no better than they are.
