Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-19A: Free speech no more

By Nathan Barton

Good morning, starting the week early as it may be a short one due to travel and work.  Just a few stories of interest from last week, dealing at first with free speech.

A 14-year-old-girl (above) confronted the school board after her dad was arrested for making comments that were “too long” about a sex book,  She said, ‘I don’t feel safe’ and I certainly agree. After watching police arrest her father at a Gilford, N.H., school board meeting Monday night for violating a two minute speaking rule, his daughter stood before the board to say she didn’t “feel safe” around them.  “I just watched my father get arrested because he broke the two minute rule, at a board of education meeting,” 14-year-old Marina Baer said. “This just shows that you resort to force at the first turn of conflict and I am appalled. So I don’t trust you, I haven’t, and I honestly don’t feel safe around you people.” As Marina began to speak, an unidentified official can be heard on the video requesting that she state her address.  (So that whomever (like so many homosexual and abortion activists) can come to her home and attack her?)  Again, will NO ONE stand up and defend New Hampshire after years of Free State Project immigration, to explain why this entire incident happened?  What are you so-called libertarians DOING in that dungheap of a state?

Two brothers featured on an axed HGTV show say there’s ‘an agenda to silence men and women of faith’ and that seems to be the case. The twin brothers who had their pilot program “Flip it Forward” canceled by HGTV because of their pro-life and pro-traditional marriage views responded in an interview Thursday night, saying there is “an agenda that seeks to silence men and women of faith.”  Certainly, the network can make its own decisions, but the REASONS for this are scary: free speech is not allowed.

In a very similar story, an Iowa newspaper editor has been fired because of anti-“gay marriage” comments he made on his private, personal blog.  Again, while any business or employer has the right to hire and fire at will (or should), the reason for this begs an explanation of why private free speech is seen as such a threat that it must be eliminated.  Like the Mozilla case and many others, it shows that political correctness is a disease that is eating away at business and home as well as community.  If not as outrageous as demands that churches have their free speech stripped away when it comes to abortion, it is a more sinister action that will lead to many more evils.

A rather eccentric New Hampshire Democrat legislator has endorsed letting welfare recipients use their EBT cards to buy weapons. This does actually make sense, as far as dong things “constitutionally” (making the assumption that the New Hampshire constitution authorizes the State to provide welfare.  We tend to think of EBT (electronic benefits transfer) as just being food stamps, but ALL their welfare benefits are usually put on the EBT: the only “cash” that an unemployed person has.  Don’t think it is going to happen, but maybe it will point out the foolishness of the welfare state to more people.

Her Majesty’s chief minister, David Cameron tells Brits that taxes will rise unless we can raid bank accounts (to get people to pay their taxes).  “The general principle – do we want to pursue every avenue of making people pay their taxes they are meant to pay before we put up taxes, because that’s the alternative – absolutely, yes we do.”  This is what the IRS has been doing for decades, of course: seizing bank accounts to make companies and people’s tax payments for them – especially the interest and penalties.  Mama Liberty notes: Of course, the idea of actually not stealing from anyone isn’t on the table, or even not spending quite so much of what they do manage to steal. The “only” answer is to steal even more. Given that they even steal from the Queen, this is business as usual.  The only thing that will stop this is a tax revolt, and one with violent actions against the Inland Revenue and Parliament and the Home Office (police): even if it is just knives and fists and boots, since the UK is mostly disarmed.

Of course, there are more and more people that demand more and more theft by government, either directly or indirectly.  Like this woman, who blames Wal-Mart for her financial troubles and wants the Fuehrer to force it to pay her more and let her work more hours.  Freedom Outpost addresses it pretty well, but we really need to understand that it is NOT just government taxes on businesses, and the minimum wage debacle, that creates problems like this.  It is also government taxes on this woman’s income (yes, Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid) and on her purchases, and everything that together combine to make it impossible for her to live.  But she has been brainwashed by the system and thinks that it is Wal-Mart’s fault, NOT the government’s.

Amazing!  The Washington Post has published “five reasons that voters don’t believe the White House about global warming.” They didn’t even use the politically correct term “climate disruption.”  The Fuehrer must be ticked.  Of course, this is an attack on tactics and not on the core religious faith that global warming (a) exists and (b) is man-made.  Here they are:  1. Overreach: The Fuehrer says everything is due to GW.  2.  Hypocrisy: Algor stated as the poster child, as well as most other politicians, including anticipating the Fuehrer will imitate Algor and Clintons in living his jetsetter lifestyle after leaving office (he IS leaving office, isn’t he?) 3.  Nice match: GW fits so nicely with the Fuehrer’s left-wing agenda.  4. No faith in foreign cooperation:  they think that the Fuehrer WANTS the US to get shafted on this as on everything else.  5.  The Fuehrer lacks credibility: the example being the ObummerCare website.  Of course, this is just one voice in/on the pages of the WaPo.
