Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-25D: The tyranny and stupidity of American cops

By Nathan Barton

For some reason, yesterday and today a whole raft of abusive cop stories, and stories related to cops being stupid and tyrannical popped up.  Here are a few in no particular order.

On the Guadalupe River, in Texas, famous for rafting and tubing fun, a row of Comal County Sheriff’s deputies conducts a checkpoint operation and warrantless searches for glass and Styrofoam, and sadly, most people don’t know that what they are doing is illegal.

Utah state troopers who used a drug dog as a pretense to search a car belonging to an innocent woman are in legal trouble. The US Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit on Friday ruled that the victims could sue the troopers for spending two hours rifling through their vehicle without finding anything unlawful, in violation of their constitutional rights.  Not that much will come out of it.  The troopers apparently trained the dog to jump into ANY car with the right signal, thus making it appear the dog had smelled drugs.  Ten points for ingenuity, minus a thousand for being tyrannical jack-booted thugs.

The stepdaughter of a 95-year-old WWII Chicago-area veteran has filed a lawsuit in federal court against six police officers accused of killing her father with bean bag rounds after he refused to go to the hospital. Of course, it was for his own good, don’t ya know?

The U.S. government’s no-fly list banning people accused of links to terrorism from commercial flights violates their constitutional rights because it gives them no meaningful way to contest that decision, a federal Nazgul ruled on Tuesday.  DHS/TSA  is nothing but more cops: a standing army of occupation.

LA courts seem to want to go the TSA one better.  They are telling people with traffic tickets that they can’t plead “not guilty” and have a trial.  Why?  Because the court has had its budget cut and just can’t get around to everyone.  Why do I put this with the cop abuse stories?  Because an HONEST, “Serve and Protect the People [and Their Rights]” cop would stop issuing traffic citations in a situation like this, and think really seriously about arresting the court officials for dereliction of duty.

A Florida couple was traumatized after a dozen heavily armed SWAT agents crashed through their front door, flash-banged their cat, aimed rifles at them and searched their home without explanation, stripping and handcuffing the woman, and trashing the house.  Most of it is on the couple’s surveillance video, and posted at PoliceStateUSA.com.  It is eye-opening.

New sensors on Chicago streets will let police see “everything” and deal with it appropriately.  Big Brother had nothing on these tyrannical jack-booted thugs. … a system of data-collection sensors that will measure air quality, light intensity, sound volume, heat, precipitation and wind. The sensors will also count people by measuring wireless signals on mobile devices.

It isn’t just cops that are stupid, as we see in Minnesota a burglar on the job just HAD to stop and check his Facebook account, and forgot to log out! Ah, the stupidity, the foolishness, the lack of professionalism.  A millennial or Gen-Y?  Or maybe an off-duty cop?

On to other news:

Since the Fuehrer took office (January 2009), average total family wealth in the US has decreased 43 percent, while that of the Fuehrer, and good ol’ Bill and Hillary, and virtually EVERYONE (Dem and GOP) in Congress has gone up, up, and up…

We thought things were resolved for that christian woman sentenced to death in the Sudan, right?  But now, bang: the Islamist government just can’t let go, and this time they included the husband, an American citizen.  So he can join the Marine in Mexico… And the US State Department says they were not “arrested” but just “detained.”  Right.  (As it turns out, she can’t leave the country because she is being charged with “lying” on an official government document and fraud, because she put down her “christian” name and NOT her birth “Muslim” name on the forms she had to fill out to leave the country.  Don’t know what crime the husband committed…)

Speaking of locking up people: The United States incarcerates 716 people for every 100,000 residents, more than any other country in the world. The rate is five times higher than most other stable, industrialized nations, even though U.S. crime rates are broadly comparable.  … even with reforms, 36 states have higher rates of incarceration than the second-highest country behind the United States, Cuba.” We are number one in SOMETHING besides “defense spending” and stupidity in Congress (or the equivalent, although one could argue that North Korea and Cuba could both compete).

Some quickie news stories and comments:

  Former Providence Mayor Cianci Eyes Post-Prison Comeback.  Ah, yes, just what EVERY city needs: a felon for its chief executive.  That way he can deal better with the criminals on the police force, in the fire department, and elsewhere – and will know how to dead with those shadow-government Mafiosi.

  Paul Ryan Solicits Citizenry for Ideas to Improve Economy.  Obviously nothing but kabuki theatre, since all of us have come up with LOTS of ideas.  Of course, we know the only idea that will WORK  short-term and long-term is the one that Ryan (and even Paul) won’t possibly consider or even mention: GET RID of the government: not just the welfare state and the nanny state, but the whole mess.

  Veterans Call for Mexican Boycott Over Jailed Marine.  Just imagine how much better Starship Troopers (Heinlein’s iconic novel, NOT the piece of garbage that Hollywood produced) would have been if the veterans had just boycotted the government and such rather than revolting and establishing a far better system than what they had been abused by.

  Veterans Group CEO: VA Problems Have Been Going on for Years Yeah?  So?  How many people were afraid to blow the whistle, either because they’d lose their jobs or because the VA might just put them down?  Our modern FedGov is even more cowardly than they are abusive and tyrannical.

  Cheers Growing for ‘Washington Reagans’ as NFL Team.  If naming a sports team for AmerInds is “offensive” and “disparaging” and not an honor, how is naming a team for a politician an honor??

  Courts Strike Down Gay Marriage Bans in Indiana and Utah The Utah decision, by a Circuit Court in Denver states that NO STATE shall be allowed to prohibit so-called “homosexual marriage,” based on the garbage which passes for reasoning in the courts of the 21st Century, where political agendas designed to tear down society to allow it to be rebuilt to the ideals of the Tranzi elites.

  Marco Rubio: Economy Needs New Direction to Ease Insecurity Yes, but I am sure that he doesn’t understand or promote the REAL “new direction” needed: getting government out of our way.  Now.  Completely.  Permanently.

  Fox Poll: 76 Percent Think Lerner IRS Emails ‘Deliberately Destroyed’.  I suppose at least a few of the others chalk it up to stupidity and the usual government way of doing business.  I hear talk about the IRS being fined for doing things wrong: THAT makes a lot of sense: we KNOW who will really be paying the fines.

Lawmakers slam cost estimate for fixing the VA as ‘Ludicrous.’ I am surprised that they consider ANY government spending that doesn’t have the T word in it as ‘ludicrous,’ but then, they constantly exaggerate.  Of course, this comes out even as we learn that the deal at the VA is even worse:  they doctored (pun intended) their records to “revive” dead patients to make their statistics look better.   All to meet the demands of the infinite-information, always-improving, lying pieces of garbage that run the FedGov.
