… break my bones, but words will never hurt me. Or so the old maxim once went.
Today, of course, there are millions of social justice warriors, parasites of various sorts (including politicians), and of course, children, who claim exactly the opposite.
Which is leading to more and more demands to censor the First Amendment itself, claiming that government must take action to end/prevent/punish offensive speech and anything else that can hurt someone. Government, not just social media companies.
And not just PRESENT and FUTURE speech. Oh no, we must go back in time to find when “evil words” are spoken or written, and punish those who said them. Whether it is going back to middle-school days and finding a “racist” or “sexist” or whatever post in a student’s social media. Then kicking them out of college or denying them admission. Or condemning some once-honored political figure, long dead, for something published a century ago.
But as far as future speech, ah! The new Massa is on it. See this report in the Star Democrat: Biden bans calling COVID ‘China virus’, ‘Wuhan virus’ | National | stardem.com (Funny, that paper in Easton, Maryland seems to be downplaying the “Democrat” part of their name, now.)
Let me quote from it: “President Joe Biden has issued an executive order banning the use of terms such as “China virus” and “Wuhan virus” when referring to COVID-19. … The Biden order instructs federal agencies to take appropriate action to scrub and edit references to the virus’ origins.
“Executive departments and agencies (agencies) shall take all appropriate steps to ensure that official actions, documents, and statements, including those that pertain to the COVID-19 pandemic, do not exhibit or contribute to racism, xenophobia, and intolerance against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders,” the Biden order reads.”
Now, we all know that imperial decrees like this (“executive orders”) only apply to the executive branch of the FedGov, right? Federal employees.
But we also know that these things have a far reaching impact. Not just to guv’mint employees, but to employees of government contractors. To those seeking government grants, and therefore to the faculty and staff (and student body) of virtually every university. Because they receive government money, directly or indirectly.
De facto, it is now illegal to say “China Virus” and “Wuhan Virus” and many more common (and cute) terms for the SARS-COV-19 virus, the illness caused by that virus, and anything related to it. At least for a large part of the power structure and the population.
And because it is “terms such as” we can figure that such names as “CCP Virus” (for Chines Communist Party) and Kung-flu and all the rest, are going to be added to the censorship list. Not just in government communications, but in the social media and online in general. After all, if these things are so bad that even genial, laidback Uncle Joe has banned it, why, so must we! Gasp! Even “Beer Flu” and “Commie Virus” are now frowned upon.
But there is something else about Biden’s dictat. Exactly HOW does using the verboten terms “contribute to racism, xenophobia, and intolerance against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders,” I ask. China and Chinese do not refer to people of India. Or Pakistan. Or Korea. Or Japan. Do they? Yet “Asian Americans” (or their ancestors) can come from ANY of these lands. And why does the use of these words do nasty things to “Pacific Islanders?” Especially since Joe didn’t distinguish between “Americans of Pacific Island origins” and EVERYONE who is a “Pacific Islander?”
I don’t understand how speaking of Wuhan, for that matter, can be demeaning to people from Beijing, Shanghai, or even Inner Mongolia or Hanan. Much less someone from Guam, the Marshall Island, Pitcairn Island, Oahu or Luzon.
Supposedly the people ghost-writing these executive orders for Joe are NOT stupid. So when they write or say something that SOUNDS stupid, we must assume there are layers and layers and intent to push things.
Like more attacks on free speech. And more attacks on the English language. Again, folks, although Orwell’s 1984 is not supposed to be a how-to manual, it seems more and more like one.
What’s next? Shall we stop calling a disease “Legionaries’ disease” because we are discriminating against members of the American Legion? Are their feelings hurt because we use that term? Are the descendants of Lou Gehrig upset that he has a disease named for him? Must we stop using words like lynching, gerrymandering, and maverick?
Perhaps this is related to the idea that it is evil to “appropriate” someone else’s culture by eating “their food” or singing “their songs” or dressing in “their clothes?” Or by having people who are not AmerInd cooking and serving “Indian tacos” or who are not Mexican from cooking and serving enchiladas or burritos? Or non-Chinese-descended people selling “Chinese food?”
I suspect this is just the gust front of a major storm of attack by the SJW, the Biden-Harris regime, extreme Democrats and the street and twitter mob against freedom of speech. Promoting censorship and punishment for anything that does not find acceptance by the powers that be.
All of this goes back to stupidity and letting government run amok. From failing to teach that personal liberty and personal responsibility go hand in hand.
