End of the world? Or just civilization?

Are the headlines scary right now? Economy? War? Sickness? More? Are things really crashing down?

Consider:

It really is quite impressive. Just a little over 30 years after the Russian Threat (then called the Soviet Threat) disappeared, that Threat has been revived – on steroids. And the fearmongering of the Nuclear War Threat has also been ramped up.

Consider: “Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told Pentagon reporters it remains unclear if Russia will use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, but if that happens, he’ll be the one making recommendations to the president about how to respond. “I’ll make sure he has credible responses that are actually effective in terms of what we want to do.”

What to Watch: Mixed messages from Russian President Vladimir Putin make for a dangerous situation, but Austin said the U.S. has “been clear from the very beginning that you would see a very significant response from the international community.” “

My, oh my. Duck and cover, children, duck and cover.

My first thought is that they will no doubt have to make their recommendations to Uncle Joe via teleprompter. And who knows if he will really be able to read them – or understand them? Maybe they’ll do that when he is having a good day. Not one of those days when he looks around the crowd trying to find dead congresscritturs.

But let us talk about “dangerous situations.” Oh, and “mixed messages.” Both of those terms can be used to describe what has been coming out of DC for decades.

Uncle Joe’s recent visit to the war zone is yet another example of dangerous situations and mixed messages. The world’s reaction is as mixed as the message, and the consequences may not fully be known for weeks. At the same time, we are seeing more overt and covert efforts on all sides in Eastern Asia and the Western Pacific, to ramp up the fears and the potential to over-react and heat up to the point of war. We have and are being pushed closer to war.

The Great Balloon Incident is all part of this. In the States, this ramps up fear of China. This may be intentional, in order to create more dependence on (and confidence in) the governments. (Or maybe it is just incompetence?) As fear grows, people are more and more willing to demand and take drastic action. Which increases the danger.

As the stakes go up, the potential impacts also increase: more things can go wrong, and they can be more severe. We are told, again and again, that the consequences are not just horrifying but unsurvivable. There are nasty, nasty things coming. And it all may mean that Uncle Joe gets reelected! Just like Obummer! Just like Bush II! Assuming, of course that there isn’t a national divorce (can’t say secession any more, can we?).

But we need to remember that in the long history of humankind, the end of the world has been predicted often – and usually just around the corner. Civilizations may fall, but in the longer term, freedom and liberty are restored and advanced.

Why shouldn’t it happen this time?
