Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-39C: Evil is as evil does

By Nathan Barton

Good morning. On the road yesterday, so playing catch up today!

A story I’ve wanted to address shows how evil and stupid government and those who trust in it are. Connecticut governor’s Sandy Hook panel recommends new restrictions on homeschooling. Connecticut parents who have chosen to homeschool their children will be faced with a new layer of bureaucracy and state regulation if a new legislative proposal from the governor’s Sandy Hook Advisory Commission succeeds.  If anything, this recommendation and action is more evil than the usual “let’s ban all the guns” or “let’s register all the guns” – and even MORE stupid.  But as all of the stories, point out, Tranzis MUST take SOME action regardless of whether the action will really accomplish anything.

Speaking of evil:  too many Tranzis, liberals and ignorant people think that the Confederate States Navy Jack (rectangular with light blue saltire) and Battle Flag (square with dark blue saltire and white border) as the symbol of evil incarnate, sure that ANYone who displays it is racist and wants to enslave black people (or people of any color other than pink).  So the State of California has done something even MORE evil and passed a law that limits, prohibits and bans the display of the flag (and apparently any variations thereof) in many cases all across California.  The Southern Cross is so evil that it means that free speech must be prohibited as “evil.”

In the old days (that is, the 1960s and 1970s, before education was so federalized), the decision to hold a child back a grade was made between the teacher and the parents, sometimes with the input of the “principal teacher” of the school, and was based on not just grades but good knowledge of the child by the teachers and parents.  Today, of course, it virtually IS a federal matter, as this story discusses.  The strain on the 9 and 10 year olds is incredible, and parents are often nothing but anguished observers.  One more piece of evidence that the idea of government (state) control or involvement in schools is evil.

U.S. and Afghanistan sign security pact to allow American forces to remain in country. The deal allows for 9,800 U.S. soldiers to stay in the country past 2014 to train and advise Afghan forces. (My, don’t you  feel safer knowing that?)  Of course, a few people claim this is extending the occupation: frankly, that is stupid: 9800 troops do NOT “occupy” a nation of millions.  Even if there are contractors and sepoys.  The point is, what good does this do?  We are seeing the problems with this sort of dwindling manpower in Mesopotamia.

In Hong Kong, a psychological battle to win over the silent majority. Both sides are fighting for the hearts and minds of undecided residents who are largely focused on their jobs instead of protests. Hong Kong: Protesters set deadline for government  Source: Baton Rouge Advocate “Pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong set a Wednesday deadline for a response from the government to meet their demands for reforms after spending another night blocking streets in an unprecedented show of civil disobedience. A brief statement from the Occupy Central civil disobedience movement said it had set an Oct. 1 deadline for the city’s unpopular Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying to meet their demands for genuine democracy and for him to step down as leader of Hong Kong.” The deadline passed with no resolution and more and more protests and violence are filling the streets.  The end is not in sight.

Mama’s Note: And what a pointless exercise all of this is, if “democracy” is indeed their goal. Democracy is the insane idea that people can and should decide everything for everyone. The “republic” is the equally insane notion that people are too stupid and evil to control their own lives, but that they are smart and good enough to choose others from among themselves to do it for them. Too bad their fight is not for individual liberty instead.

On Monday, I saw that Gold and Silver are continuing to crash, slow motion. Even though it had spiked (Tuesday morning) back to $1216, it had dropped 5% for the month of September, despite all the screams.  People don’t really know what the price will do; same with silver, which is now at $17.27, lowest for quite a while.  But yesterday they all continued to drop.  We really don’t know just what is up, yet.

Oil prices are dropping, also, down 16% in three months and continue to drop this week.  I’ve found out that gasoline is under $3/gallon in East River of South Dakota ($2.999 in Pierre on Tuesday!), and only 25-30 cents more here in the Black Hills, after months of pushing near $4. (Still much higher in Northeastern Wyoming.) That is good for the economy, but a long ways from where it should be (I mean it should be much LOWER).  Why?  Government meddling and preventing exploration, production and development.  Based on oil prices, gasoline should be nearer $2 than $3, but with the shortage of refineries, that is not going to happen. National Daily Policy Update has a good digest of an article on what could reduce costs: most of which are GET THE GOVERNMENT OUT!

As I’ve pointed out early, we are now seeing that the Secret Service is just another inefficient, incompetent, and out-of-control government agency, incapable of carrying out its stated mission.  First it turned out that the Secret Service agent who tackled intruder was off duty. The agent, part of the Obama daughters’ security detail, is said to have been coincidentally in the mansion.

Mama’s Note: Just had to shrug, reading about the CDC “contractor” who managed to get onto the elevator with the Idiot in Chief…  a “felon” and, oh horror, with a GUN!!! First, what in the world does the CDC need with armed guards? It seems this person had done his job previously, so was not likely a real threat to anyone. But, really, this total hysteria over “protection” of the president… do you think that they might not need to be quite so hysterical if the “president” quit pissing off most of the people on the globe? You think? I have a funny feeling that nobody and nothing can protect him for long if that continues.

The Telegraph (UK) is aghast at the poor job the Secret Service is doing to protect the Fuehrer.  Political Outcast had a great response: “I don’t think anyone at the Telegraph should be worried: Barack Obama is one of the safest Presidents in American history. There is not a single enemy of the United States that desires to see him leave office one minute early.” At the same time, as I told Political Outcast, “I must protest your slur against anarchists – we are NOT nihilists, which you seem to confuse with us.  I am a free market anarchist who believes that human government is rebellion against God, and would no more kill any man (except in self-defense or defending my family/brethren) than I would betray Christ Himself.  Otherwise, it is a good article and comments, and I think you are right.  Uncle Joe is a further reason to not want  this squatter to go away too soon.”

Two things occur to me, however.  First, is it really possible for an agency to be this incompetent at what is supposed to be one of its PRIMARY jobs? Or is there some evil intention behind this?  Some reason to hope that a madman gets in?  Even if all he is carrying is a pocket knife IN HIS POCKET?

The second thought is that the incompetence of the Secret Service really just reflects the guy that they work for, as shown in the next two stories.

Oh no: Fuehrer prepares a lavish feast for Indian prime minister – who was in the middle of a religious fast.  The White House hosted Narendra Modi, India’s prime minister, Monday at a White House dinner intended to commemorate the first-ever meeting of the two national leaders. There was crisped halibut, avocado, goat cheese and more – with mango crème brulee for dessert. None of which the Indian PM could eat because… the guest of honor was fasting.

Another commentator notes: No wonder he’s clueless: he has attended fewer than half of daily intelligence briefings.  The Fuehrer blamed intelligence community failures for his foreign policy ineptitude in a “60 Minutes” interview this week. But a new report out from the Government Accountability Institute (GAI) reveals another explanation for why the president doesn’t seem to know what’s going on: He has attended fewer than half of his daily intelligence briefings since taking office.  Too many other important things to do, I know.  It does lend credence to the ideas some people have floated: he doesn’t need to have any of this information because HE is not the one making the decisions.
