Police forces: a force for evil (was Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-45A)

By Nathan Barton

Good morning. Due to work and travel, I was essentially not on-line for about 48 hours.

I am starting out today (and this week) with some truly disgusting examples of how cops are terrorizing and injuring and killing people.  One of my great frustrations with many talk-show people today is that they are willing to admit the evil done by police but still try to stand up for the institution, instead of standing up for the fewer and fewer peace officers who (even if in error) try to treat people kindly and honestly and helpfully, and berate those of us who report and comment on the vicious and deadly behavior of more and more police forces and police officers.

A Florida cop has been arrested for raping a woman at gunpoint (stranded by having the driver of the car she was in arrested for DUI and the car impounded) on the hood of his marked police car, making her strip naked in an open field near town.  It turns out she is probably not the first, just the first to ignore his warning he’d kill her if she told.  To make it worse, he is not just a cop but a member of the Army Reserve, and these serial rape, kidnapping, and extortion crimes have been going on for perhaps a decade.  For ONCE, the police department is NOT trying to cover up, but has collected evidence and gotten the piece of trash locked up without bail.  Heinlein’s solution is the best one: this man should be hung from the neck until dead in front of EVERY fellow police officer in the town, if not county, and EVERY comrade soldier in his current and past military units.  And his possessions, including whatever percentage of his police and military retirement he’d earned to this point, divided among the victims.

Also in Florida, a middle school female student had her arm broken by a cop when she tried to resist him taking her phone (without a warrant) as he supposedly investigated a complaint that SHE was being bullied in school.  In other words, he further victimized the victim of a reported crime, himself violating the law and in a way and for a reason that makes NO sense.  By the way, why did she resist?  Because she was talking to her mother on the phone when he tried to take it from her.  Stupid?  Indeed.  Cruel and brutal and without ANY excuse.

Bad as American cops are, it seems that (once again) someplace in the world is even worse, hard as that is to imagine sometimes.  Consider Brazil where it is reported that cops average killing six people A DAY over the past three years. “Brazilian police killed more than 11,000 people between 2009 and 2013 for an average of six killings a day, a public safety NGO said Tuesday. The study by the Sao Paulo-based Brazilian Forum on Public Safety said police nationwide killed 11,197 people over the past five years, while law enforcement agents in the United States killed 11,090 people over the past 30 years.”

Part of this, as with police and military forces in other Iberian cultures and nations, is due to the history and outcome of the Reconquista and centuries of military rule, combined with the deadly immorality of easily-gained wealth and stupid government decisions regarding their economies and societies.  But things like their history EXPLAIN and do not EXCUSE this terror.

I have said and say again, modern police forces are immoral and nothing more than an occupation force that terrorizes and tyrannizes its own people and nation. “Service” in police forces attracts the most brutal and often the most stupid (not unintelligent, but of relatively low intelligence) of people who see and take an outlet for their darker passions and opportunity to abuse people and wallow in power over them.  NO, I am not saying that every police officer is this way, but face it, their basic income, salary, is paid for with stolen money – taxes taken from people with the threat of a gun and jail (wielded by those very cops) behind the forced collection of money.

Driving through the Denver area this week, listening to traffic reports, several times it was mentioned that “courtesy patrols” (sponsored by car dealers and the like) were helping people which had car problems or flat tires and were therefore stuck on the highway and slowing down traffic.  Meanwhile the Colorado State Patrol, originally CALLED and functioning as a “courtesy patrol” to help motorists, and their sister “law enforcement agencies” in the metro area, according to the radio reports, were doing more to SLOW and STOP traffic by enforcing the traffic law, conducting criminal investigations in the middle of rush hour, and things like that than in helping people.  It has become a perverted enterprise.  I am again NOT saying that individual state troopers do not help motorists and resolve problems with traffic, but just that the agencies as a whole seem to work AGAINST the people, including travelers.

Replacing police forces whether in Brazil or the Fifty States or anyplace else in the world with people and systems that can help keep or restore the peace and deal with crimes, without theft and murder, is essential to the future of human liberty.  The solution lies in the free market and voluntary cooperation and mutual defense against aggressors, NOT in creating and supporting (voluntarily or involuntarily) more vicious aggressors.
