Evil disguised as care and compassion, tyranny disguised as liberty (was Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-48D)

Happy Thanksgiving!

I wrote about thanks yesterday; fortunately, most of us still have many things to be thankful to God about, but we also need to include both prayers for deliverance (and the strength of will to work out our own) and for freedom; the kind of things in these first two stories, which are examples of how evil and twisted many in our society have become.

In Cincinnati, Ohio, women face a fine of $1000 if they complain about a “transgendered” anatomical male using the “ladies’ restroom.” As do businesses or organizations who seek to prevent anatomical males or females who consider themselves to be the other (another?) sex from using the facilities designated for their claimed sex.  If the law passes as expected.  The reason?  The council says that “justice” and “understanding” are long past due.

Mama’s Note: Such idiocy. I can think of several places in the world with “unisex” public facilities. But this is one more reason for people to take charge of their own lives. If a person was truly offended by the mere sight of the opposite sex in a public toilet, they just wouldn’t go back there. The professional victims and whiners can have it.

Two nasty incidents in the South: In Atlanta, the Fire Chief, recently moving back to his hometown to take the job, is being attacked and condemned by the city’s homosexual community because he wrote a book which includes his opinion that homosexuality is wrong and harmful to those practicing it.  There is also a college where a well-liked and well-respected professor is being attacked (and his firing demanded) by atheists because he (a) believes in special creation, and (b) does not believe in global warming.  Again, the excuse is that the accused are evil and that the homosexuals and atheists are victims of their evil.

Would even ONE Libertarian explain to me exactly HOW these things promote liberty and freedom?  Exactly HOW this demonstrates that accepting homosexuality as a preferred and accepted (not just tolerated) life-style does not take away other people’s rights?  Exactly WHY ANY privileged group is allowed to have their  so-called rights to be worshipped and respected override the freedom of speech, freedom of association, privacy rights, freedom to MAKE YOUR OWN CHOICES, and everything else? This is NOT liberty: it is tyranny by a tiny oligarchy of 3% or so of the population over the rest of us (whether we are talking homosexuals or atheists).  Yeah, fine, I understand that supposedly a “majority” of people claim to favor them having “rights” that make the rest of us (and even them!) give up rights.  That fire chief isn’t going to order his firefighters to NOT put out fires in houses or businesses that belong to homosexuals, and that college professor is not going to flunk students that don’t agree with his political, religious, OR scientific views: there is plenty of evidence in both cases that sort of thing isn’t going to happen.  Offered in the name of “liberty,” these attacks are promoting tyranny.  Claiming to represent “diversity” and “respect” and “acceptance,” they promote hatred and strife.  And they encourage a backlash which will destroy the very people and things supposedly being protected.

Mama’s Note: “Libertarian” has become almost as confused and misused as the word “anarchist.” Each person can legitimately believe and do anything as long as they don’t use force or fraud. Those promoting special “rights” for anyone, for any reason are not “Libertarian,” no matter what they say. By the same token, those who believe homosexuality, or anything else, is harmful or evil, have a perfect right not to practice such or even to preach such. They simply have no right to any kind of aggression to prevent it.

Though not directly related to these incidents, this quote of C.S. Lewis, which I was reminded of today, is certainly applicable.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive… To be ‘cured’ against one’s will and cured of states which we may not even regard as disease is to be put on a level with those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals. For if crime and disease are to be regarded as the same thing, it follows that any state of mind which our masters choose to call ‘disease’ can be treated as a crime; and compulsorily cured. Even if the treatment is painful, even if it is life-long, even if it is fatal, that will be only a regrettable accident; the intention was purely therapeutic.” — C. S. Lewis

Political Outcast features an interesting article this week: “Spiritual Ebola.”  In the light of the above stories, this article raises a legitimate, even important concept: physical illnesses and epidemics are generally NOT as bad for people and society as spiritual and political epidemics.  The examples of what we once jokingly called “political correctness” are actual examples of twisted and warped human evil: tyranny disguised as supporting freedoms, liberties, that are NOT anything more than just plain tyranny as wicked, as evil, as anything in Brave New Word or 1984.

I cannot divorce religion from politics (which is a very, VERY different thing than divorcing religion and the state, despite the claim of so many so-called libertarians to the contrary), indeed, the reason I AM a “libertarian” (a free-market anarchist) is because I was and am FIRST a child of God, a disciple of Christ Jesus.  Our war, our defense, against the tyranny of which these are examples, must be a moral war, a war of the spirit as much or more than a physical war of self-defense against physical acts of aggression.  Americans and “our” leaders have created a toxic society that infects us ALL with corruption and vileness in much the way measles or the common cold is spread, and not at all like a relatively hard-to-get disease like ebola or AIDS or syphillis infects victims.

A political or spiritual malaise can be as damaging to individuals and groups and societies as a physical one. Yet, the methods of prevention are much the same: infection control can be practiced in a political or spiritual sense as well as a physical sense.  “Evil deeds are done in darkness: shine the light on them and they often vanish.”  We must contain the contagion, shield ourselves from exposure, and educate ourselves to do what is necessary to both prevent infection and to fight it within ourselves if we are infected.  Those are moral, spiritual, and even religious actions that are necessary: a failure to believe that mankind – that men and women – are MORE than animals, MORE than prey to be hunted and herded, that we are a special creation, is the first in a long series of steps that leads to gas chambers full of bodies and pyramids of skulls and long, deep mass graves.
