Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-50C: Historical changes in the Middle East; dead letters

By Nathan Barton

Whether we want to admit it or not, history is constantly being rewritten, and what we see in the world today is much different in many ways that what was seen a quarter- or half-century behind us, or the same time in the future.  We just don’t realize the huge changes, most of the time, because they are incremental.

It is kind of interesting, historically, when you think about it.  For almost 2500 years, from the time of the “Babylonian Captivity” after the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem, there have been Jews scattered throughout the lands of Mesopotamia and Persia and Arabia.  For more than nineteen hundred years, since the preaching of Peter and Andrew and Thomas in those lands, there have been followers of the Christ in those same regions.

Now, in a short space of 60+ years for the Jews and only 25 or so for the christians, a religious cleansing by Arab Muslims (aided and abetted by the West, even if not intentionally) has driven out first Jews and then christians: destroying ancient communities and sometimes wiping out all visible traces as the various people have been killed, assimilated, or fled to Israel or other places in the West.

The latest example of this is the Caliphate’s abuse and killing spree. Andrew White of Baghdad (Anglican) is quoted: “ISIS turned up and they said to the children, ‘you say the words that you will follow Muhammad.’ The Children, all under 15, four of them, they said, ‘no, we love Yasua [Jesus]. We have always loved Yasua. We have always followed Yasua. Yasua has always been with us. [The Militants] said, ‘say the words!’ [The Children] said, ‘no, we can’t do that.’ They chopped all their heads off. How do you respond to that? You just cry. They are my children. That is what we have been going through. That is what we are going through.”

Now, I have to be cautious about this: no photos or other evidence is submitted, and we all know that propaganda efforts are rife in the region.  But based on documentation of how the Caliphate treats the children of other sects of Muslims, this is likely a true account.  Does it mean that the FedGov must therefore deepen its involvement in yet another Middle Eastern war?  Absolutely not:  this sort of bloody-handed action is not going to stop there – at least not without bringing the tools and mental attitude of self-defense and a new moral viewpoint to the region.  It cannot and never has been imposed from outside.

The similar process is clear in these Fifty States, but it seems that people are unwilling to pay much attention to it.  Clearly, we are in a post-republican, post-freedom environment.  Consider several more stories.

Protests and riots – with the mandatory looting, destruction of private and government property, and attacks on businesses and anyone who doesn’t move quickly enough – continued in Berkeley, Calfiornia again every night so far this weekend.  The local cops used tear gas and rubber bullets to punish the protesters, but failed to disperse them to any significant degree.  While much of the mob seemed to be other than black, it appears that the Berkeley Police and California Highway Patrol are just waiting for the perfect opportunity to kill or seriously maim yet another “black youth” (or would that be “youth of color”) so that the riots can go through a fresh cycle.

Sharpton: Blacks can’t act decently without more government payouts, especially in the form of jobs programs, social welfare programs, and the like (no doubt including reparations for something that happened 150 years ago).  It seems that on Sunday, Al Sharpton appeared on NBC’s Meet The Press (one wag suggests that this was to fulfill his weekend race-baiting quota), where the hosts ate up his discussion of the grand jury results in the cases of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.  These sorts of things require no thinking on Sharpton’s part: he just lets his mouth run.

Beloit, Wisconsin, sounds likes like a very good place to stay away from – or move away from.  Its police chief compares guns to Ebola, and asks people in his town to volunteer to have their homes searched for guns.  We all know how sneaky guns can be, very much like skunks who seek out warm dark places in which to nest and have their litters, and who wants a bunch of stinky little baby guns crawling around under their houses or porches?

The “CIA Torture Report” is out – five years in the making, and reports that (surprise, surprise!) the government lied to the world and its people time and time again, in 6.3 million pages of documents.  The bottom line?  Interrogation and torture are nothing more than ANOTHER FAILED GOVERNMENT PROGRAM.  This does not “restore our values” or show we are a just and honest society: it shows that we have allowed the government ONCE AGAIN to commit crimes and do horrible things in response to something that is dubious at best, and with NO real justification. ONCE AGAIN, we see that agents of the FedGov are no better than the Islamist and Communist torturers against whom we are supposedly fighting and have been for 70 years.  By the way, where are the protesters?  The FedGov admits to torturing hundreds, and I haven’t yet heard of a single “don’t tase me” or “don’t strip me” or “don’t threaten my family” protests, not even in Detroit!

Congress reaches deal for $1.1 trillion U.S. spending bill, that aims to avoid a government shutdown at midnight on Thursday (too bad!) and punts an immigration showdown between Republicans and the White House until February (so a lot more fireworks then).  Once more, Congress has refused to take any real action other than to continuing stealing and wasting money.  And damaging what is left of the economy of the Fifty States.  Ho hum, business as usual, where Congress (like the Senate with Augustus) gives the Fuehrer whatever money he asks for.  Sure, a few questions are asked, but no one cares.

Which brings me to the last story today:

Humor or uncovering a key (and highly suggestive) fact?  The New Yorker’s “humor section” recently posted a tongue-in-check report of a meeting between Prince William of Windsor and the Fuehrer, in which supposedly the Fuehrer quizzed the second-in-line to the British throne about how to set up a monarchy and otherwise change the Constitution. It appears that a number of commentators did not understand this was satire, but did point out that they couldn’t find the news story on-line.  This is a pain, as the story will no doubt spread and we will be denying it for years to come.  But it is also clear that the Fuehrer does not need to waste time getting the US Constitution changed, any more than Augustus did more than 2,000 years ago, and it is clear that he is already acting like a monarch or dictator, whether Congress is in session or not.  As far as the White House and Capitol (Congress) are concerned, except in the odd procedural matter, the Constitution is NOT a living document: it is a dead letter.
