Stupidity – in and out of government

By Nathan Barton

Maybe it is not appropriate to discuss this after a week in which an idiot apparently was able to outwit (or dodge around) other idiots (several of them elected officials and many more political appointees) and set off bombs which (fortunately) didn’t do anything more than wound people.

(An aside: The bombings in NYC and NJ WERE, we were assured over and over again, nothing to do with international terrorism (that is, Islamist terrorists trying to kill in the name of Allah). (Along with the “non-aligned” knifeman in Minnesota.) We were told this over and over again, until finally, we were told the opposite: they WERE Islamic terrorists, doing this in the name of Allah, but… they weren’t really connected to any international movement. Until again, after the various groups crowed over how successful they were at doing nasty things to the Great Satan (the Fifty States), it was admitted that there may be some connection with international “movements” BUT we don’t know the motive of the attacks. Right!)

The behavior of government, in situations like this, cannot be characterized as anything other than stupid, no matter what the motivation. The reasons for this are subject to debate. But they are also moot. Government will not – can not – respond with intelligence and common sense to any event of this type (except out of sheer luck – and THAT is considered nothing but bad luck from the point of view of the leaders of that government).

Government’s first response is ALWAYS to make sure that “everyone knows” that “they are in charge” and “everything is under control.” And that the people are kept calm. The same people that they fleece for a living, and cozen for a profession.

All of which again demonstrates not just how stupid government is, but how stupid the leaders of government are willing to appear to be, as they seek to sway popular opinion and keep their jobs and get their rewards. They are not capable of doing what they think that they can – and that is stupid.

But there are times when people can be just as stupid as government. Even when they are supposedly fighting government. (Although in this case, it is apparently just to impose another government, just with a different group of people in charge. Still just as stupid, it seems.) The Blaze’s blog has a viral video of a Syrian rebel blowing himself up with an explosive-rigged cell phone while taking a selfie. Would that more people would imitate him! Another contender for the Darwin Award!

Of course, we should be glad that these sorts of rebels and jehadists are able to exercise their stupidity on themselves, and therefore not get to do nasty, stupid things to us!

And we should not let them distract us from the truly dangerous threat that government poses to our lives, liberty, health, safety, and security – a threat made worse by its inherent stupidity.
