Building on a recent commentary, the news, and talk shows are filled today (27 JAN 2023) with stories about violence in these Fifty States. Particularly, the news is filled with the attack on Paul Pelosi in San Francisco, while his wife was still US Speaker of the House. And the beating to death of a younger black motorist in Memphis, Tennessee, a couple of weeks ago. Of course, as always, the news is filled with reports of mayhem across the States: two mass killings by elderly Asian murderers in California, and many others. And of course, wars all over the planet, “official” or not.
Indeed, the “Gun Violence Archive” claims 45 “mass shootings” so far this month, although only 7 of those actually included a monster killing three or more people. And one of those was cops killing people during a gun battle – including (as I understand it) innocent bystanders. Several of those 7 were domestic murder-suicides, which is very sad.
When people look at the publicized numbers of “mass shootings” and then add all the one or two killed at a time (with guns, knives, etc.), it is easy to say that the States – or at least many of them – are involved in an internal war.
And that, of course, is good for government: it perpetuates the myth that human, mandated government is essential to society: to our States, to our communities. It is an excuse for more and more taxes and spending, more and more control, and more and more curtailment of our liberties.
Take the point of view of the statists, of the lovers of government, those who lust after power over others, the parasites on the public body. They welcome the violence, even while they condemn it. Why? Because it pushes people to support that agenda of government.
And politicians – even those who claim to support our liberty to defend ourselves and others with weapons – also welcome the violence and arguments which follow. Because they, too, get money and publicity and money.
But it isn’t true: Americans have always “been at war” with those who use aggressive violence against other people. Whether it was soldiers of opposing colonial powers, murdering marauders of tribes whose immoral culture demanded aggression, outlaws, government officials, invaders, or those suffering from insanity.
Today, we hear more quickly and in much more detail than we heard of mass murders (or shootings) in the colonial era, the first 80 years of American independence, the vicious era leading up to and including the War between the States, the Indian Wars, the labor violence of the “progressive era” or the alcohol-fueled prohibition era.
When people are taught to be aggressive, not taught to live morally and live without hope, there is always violence. Particularly when many people believe we are nothing more than animals.
The solution is never to disarm, and never to submit to tyranny. It is liberty: freedom with responsibility, individually and personally. This is not inherited or hereditary behavior: it can only be taught and learned. Taught through word and deed, by example. Learned through experience and accepting responsibility.
