All four of these men make an important point about “democracy.”(And by the way, make Winston Churchill into the liar and propagandist he so often was, claiming that ‘Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.…’
But although republics are limited in power and have other features far superior to democracies, they are still mandatory human government, and only marginally better than unbridled democracy.
As TPOL has recently stated, we need no kings, no presidents, no chairmen, no prime ministers. And we do not need people who claim that The People or a majority or a plurality of people can have the power of a king or prime minister or any other “ruler.” As Mama Liberty pointed out, we have a hard time governing our individual selves, let alone other people. And as TPOL also points out, the intelligence of a committee (or any significant group of people) is calculated by taking the IQ of the smartest person in the group and dividing it by the total number of persons (or feet, or fingers) in the group.
To change Hamilton’s quote: Real liberty is never found in mandatory human government, however we define or catagorize it.”
Rather, society and the rules of society, a free, voluntary society, is based on fundamental principles such as the Zero Aggression Principle (the Golden Rule, if you prefer) and the idea that we as humans all have rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, including ownership of property and the products of our own labor.
Any kind of human government endangers our liberties, our freedom. Whether it is a monarchy (“constitutional” or not), a republic, an oligarchy, a mass democracy, or some cobbled-together form.
It is true that democracy deteriorates. As we see in our present age, as much as in the past. All forms of government, all concepts of society, also decay. Why? Fundamental principles are abandoned, twisted, warped, and ignored. Parasites are allowed to establish themselves and prey on those around them. People become fat (often literally!) and lazy, and think “things are great and will stay that way.” And the result is decay and soon enough, collapse.
Which is yet another reason that vigilance, eternal vigilance, is part of The Price of Liberty.
