Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-26C: Happy Independence Day

By Nathan Barton

Good morning, and welcome to the second half of Anno Domini 2014!  As I started to write this yesterday, friends north of the border were celebrating Canada Day, the creation of the Dominion of Canada in 1867.  They didn’t want a bunch of lords and commoners thousands of miles away in London telling them EVERYthing.  Frankly, they might have been better off than having that collection of statist powermongers in Ottawa like they do now.

Today is actually the anniversary of the date on which those Founding Fathers in Philadelphia voted to accept the Declaration and declare independence from both King AND Parliament in London.  Despite our current circumstance, in which the tyranny of Parliament has been replaced by a far MORE burdensome tyranny of Congress, and while the Fuehrer and his minions have replaced King George III and HIS servants, it was the right thing to do. Today, we need to fight against the Counter-Revolution which over the past 238 years has stolen the liberties we gained.

On to news items today:

The US Supreme Court, the Nine Nazgul, was in the news a lot yesterday on various items, especially the “Hobby Lobby” decision (which I will discuss separately).  But there is more:

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday turned down a request to hear a challenge to a California law prohibiting mental health counseling aimed at converting minors from being gay to straight. No “free speech” for doctors or counselors: this is considered “conduct” and is to be criminalized, as New Jersey, Massachusetts and ten other states have done, stealing parental authority and ensuring that the young victims of sexual abuse (Like good ol’ Rolf in the next story) will just have to deal with it on their own.  The Nazgul can’t be bothered with that.

A multimillionaire “cultural hero” and artist, Australian Rolf Harris was convicted on Monday of 12 counts of indecent assault on victims as young as seven after a jury refused to believe his protestations of innocence during the eight-week trial.  What is totally disgusting about this is the way media and “pubic” figures, celebrities, have rallied to the defense of this 84-year-old serial rapist, claiming “things were different in the old days” and moaning about how he deserves better.  At the same time, several dozen MORE people have come out to add their names to the list of his victims, and at least SOME organizations (schools, zoos, even the Queen’s honors committee) have started removing his influence.  Like Woody Allen and other famous entertainers and cultural figures, apparently he can do no wrong in the eyes of too many of his “peers.’

Hobby Lobby and the above weren’t the only decisions by the Nazgul announced on Monday. The Supreme Court dealt a setback to the union movement Monday, ruling personal home care employees cannot be forced to pay dues to a union. I am not sure why they ruled this way, or who bought whom off.  Obviously the unions are more seriously in decline than many of us realized.

T-Mobile stealing people blind?  Authorizing apps that customers never ordered or wanted?  So say the feds.  T-Mobile denies it, even while “fixing” problems for customers.

In Washington State, the thugs and tyrants are in full charge and we cannot expect anything but more of this. The Independence Day weekend is a “no refusal” weekend for the jackbooted thugs that lay in wait for their prey on Washington State highways, and if you even balk at taking a breath test, they’ll suck your blood and lock you up in a cell.  No “innocent until proven guilty,” no warrant, no probable cause, and no free speech.  Where has all the freedom gone, long time passing?

Part has gone to the thugs and thugettes in Congress:

Ah, wonderful sweet Congresspeople!  Nancy Pelosi says that the US and Mexico are one ‘With a border going through it.’ Right.  Just like the ethnic Russian areas of Ukraine and Mother Russia itself are “just one country with a border going through it.”  Which is why she is supporting the Fuehrer’s confrontation with Russia.  Wonder what she thinks about Canada (except maybe Quebec?)?

Prince William County (Maryland) cops, after raids, arrange treatment for drug users, get some takers. After arresting dozens of people, the police arranged to get them into drug treatment immediately, an unusual step for law enforcement.  Maybe this is some form of “bad cop, good cop” routine to lull them into trusting the thugs?

You know, some people are just so stupid that you wonder how they survived to grow up (they certainly didn’t become adults).  Indeed, words fail me.  After a customer with a concealed weapon interrupted a robber stabbing the store manager to death and saved his life, the store put up “no guns” signs – but apparently knives are still okay.  Irrational fears of liberty?

Pope Francis says communists are closeted Christians who have appropriated the Bible’s central message of poverty. The 77-year-old pontiff has often attacked the global economic system as being insensitive to the poor, which has caused critics to label him a Marxist.

Mama’s Note: And dumb as a box of rocks… I thought he had something at first… boy, was I wrong. Hmmm, “help” the poor and fight poverty by preaching universal poverty (except for the elite like him, of course). They like to pretend that they live in poverty themselves, but any fool can see the truth of their incredible stolen wealth and arrogance. Would love to see a list of millionaire Jesuits.  They probably can’t begin to even imagine universal prosperity instead. Requires freedom… so they can’t go there.

Nathan: Many Catholics are shockingly disappointed with Francis, and they had high hopes.  But they also refuse to understand the history of their own church, especially in Argentina and all of Latin America and the Hispanic world. For most of 1400 years, the Roman Catholic hierarchy has been part of the elite and a partner (often the DOMINANT partner) of government, sustaining and encouraging and promoting an ungodly human government.
