The decline into stupidity accelerated in the last few weeks, and continues to do so. There are two BIG examples: the reaction to the Orlando Massacre, and Brexit. Let’s talk about the massacre. The Orlando Massacre seems to have triggered some truly insane actions, and actually embedded in the stone that some people use for brains some memes that are idiotic and frightening for their complete disconnect to reality.
Consider FIRST the show business magazine Billboard. On their website, as on the cover of their print magazine, they have an “Open Letter to Congress.” I quote from the end of that missive:
“The one thing that connects the recent tragedies in Orlando is that it is far too easy for dangerous people to get their hands on guns. We call on Congress to do more to prevent the gun violence that kills more than 90 Americans every day and injures hundreds more, including:
• Require a background check for every gun sale
• Block suspected terrorists from buying guns
Billboard and the undersigned implore you—the people who are elected to represent us—to close the deadly loopholes that put the lives of so many music fans, and all of us, at risk.”
While they are at it, let us call on Congress to do the following things:
(1) Stop some parents from abusing their children.
(2) Stop homes from being burglarized.
(3) Stop cops from killing innocent people.
(4) Stop some teachers from sleeping with (abusing) their students.
(5) Stop people from speeding on the highways.
(6) Stop toilets from backing up.
Well, that is enough for you to get the point. None of these things are possible for ANY government to do. No matter HOW many stupid laws they pass, and no matter HOW draconian the enforcement of those laws.
CONGRESS CANNOT STOP SUSPECTED TERRORISTS FROM BUYING GUNS. Any more than the Soviets or the Cubans or the Nazis stopped THEIR enemies from buying (or just getting) guns. Congress doesn’t have the battalions. Passing a law is AS USELESS for controlling the actions of terrorists as it is for controlling the actions of speeders.
Well, what about background checks? BACKGROUND CHECKS DID NOT PREVENT THE KILLER IN ORLANDO FROM BUYING GUNS. GET THAT? Did NOT. Any more than it stopped the killers in San Bernardino, or in Fort Hood. Or in Aurora or Columbine. Why? Background checks assume:
a. Perfect intelligence/knowledge: omniscience, in fact.
b. Perfect actions – NO mistakes – on the part of government employees in 10s of thousands of agencies and offices.
c. Perfect compliance by people in how they buy guns, including who they buy them for and from.
As with the business about “blocking terrorists,” there is NOTHING that Congress can do to REQUIRE background checks for all gun sales, any more than Congress and keep people and companies (and governments) from polluting, or keep people from robbing convenience stores or banks. Or keeping people from killing themselves.
Billboard and all the idiots that signed that “open letter” have a degree of faith in government’s knowledge, efficiency, capabilities, and goodness that makes you think twice about the faith that the most fanatic of Muslims have in Allah, or for that matter, that 99.999% of christians have in Jesus Christ.
As for Congress itself, we witnessed a flashback to college campuses of the late 1960s and early 1970s with the childish and meaningless “sit-in” in the chamber of the House of Representative, that makes a mockery of open, civil government. More, we have seen the total lack of responsibility and self-discipline of supposed “leaders” in their 60s and 70s that demonstrates they are no more mature NOW than they (and their comrades) were in the 1960s and 1970s. THEY are the true delinquents, who are unwilling to accept responsibility for their own actions while they DEMAND that hundreds of millions of Americans be dragged into the ever more powerful grip of the police state. These are the SAME people that claimed that the regimes of LBJ and Tricky Dick were a police state, corrupt and warmongering. Now, they want to wage even more dreadful war against their own fellow citizens, and make a police state that rivals anything that J Edgar Hoover or John Mitchell or anyone else in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s ever tried to erect upon the backs of Americans. This is worse than “#OccupyCongress” – it is the equivalent of the chairman and board of a major corporation occupying their own company headquarters.
It makes me sick; at the same time I am laughing my head off at the stupid, childish antics of these so-called leaders. No wonder they want to make toilets in public places unisex: they are too stupid to be able to tell the difference between the symbol for male and female. And they are too stupid to be allowed to run around without a keeper.
As we almost constantly note and notice, the vast majority (some 80%+) of inmates in Federal correctional facilities are there because of mala prohibita violations (no victim). It is time to free them, to free up the cell space needed to put every congressman, every senator, every cabinet member (going down at LEAST two levels) and every senior official in the White House, including POTUS, VPOTUS, Chief of Staff, and “Senior Advisors”) for the last 30-plus years INTO, letting them make ball-point pens and staplers and paperclips for the rest of their lives. Dennis Hastert is already there, but not for all the reasons he should be: he needs to be joined by tens of thousands more.
Meanwhile, the stupidity of government and those who support it and function in it, are with us. Is it a punishment for giving up our liberty?
Mama’s Note: I don’t know, Nathan. Who would voluntarily support all those government people in prison? I wouldn’t pledge a dime for it. Remove their power to control and harm the rest of us, absolutely. Then they can attempt to find an honest job… or starve. Some benevolent group might buy an island for them to homestead… preferably with plenty of sharks in the water… and no boats on the island. I can dream, can’t I?
