Happy Columbus Day?

Today is the “rescheduled” Federal holiday of Columbus Day. In some States (in an “in appearance only” federalism that borders on mockery), it is “Native American Day” or “Indigenous Peoples Day” or some such. Many politicians (not just the Woke type) refuse to “celebrate” the day to show the “People of Color” their solidarity – or at least their sympathy. But those politician’s offices (their official ones, not their campaign offices, it seems) are nonetheless closed today for a Federal holiday.

And Columbus Day was traditionally on the 12th of October – the anniversary of Columbus’ arrival on an island in the Americas. Now, it is a floating holiday to ensure that government officials and employees get yet another holiday. (See also Juneteenth, Veterans Day, etc.) Many businesses offer the holiday off to their employees – though many small and customer-oriented businesses do not – and often cannot afford to. A matter of economics, not politics.

Columbus Day sales events are growing more rare – a political not economic decision. Except for those Woke businesses who fear that the Regressives will punish them for observing the day.

Real world problems: floods and droughts, hurricanes and blizzards, tornadoes and hail #1 Water

In this fallen world of ours, the planet itself is not as hospitable a place as we’d like. Though parts of it come close, Terra is not a paradise. The third rock from the sun, Old Sol himself, is just that: mostly rock. Lots of metal, too, even those metals that cause cancer. And wars.

All that metal and rock has a very thin layer of dirt, water, and air. A little bit of water. And other liquids, and gases (both confined and floating held only by gravity). That is mostly where we humans live. That air and dirt and water also support more than just humans: there are animals, from single-cell critters up to blue whales and great condors and even elephants. But sometimes there isn’t enough dirt: it isn’t there and so it is exposed rock. Or it’s covered by water. Usually salt water, but sometimes fresh water – water with a low enough salt content to make it drinkable by humans, birds, and land animals.

Pot and guns

Even while more and more States legalize the use of cannabis for both medical and recreational use, the Deep State and the FedState nannies continue to bauk. Among other things, the feds continue to argue that people who use marijuana must be prohibited from exercising their God-given rights.

Based on the people of the States, and on polls and surveys, it very much seems that the feds – the corrupt DOJ, corrupt FBI, and senile White House – seem to again be ignoring the very “democracy” that they claim to worship. (Not that we here at TPOL think much of “democracy” or government.)

Rob Morse, between dealing with flooding and other issues, provides some information about this situation:

Speaking of fraud …

Yesterday, we wrote about the sickness of scamsters and con artists that ply their disgusting profession for and in the government. Especially the FedGov, but even at the State, local, and tribal level.

The exemplar of these fedgov fraudsters is, of course, the Congress itself. (It is no wonder that the greatest POTUS con artists in recent history have been trained and practiced in Congress: Uncle Joe, Obummer, Bush I, Ford, Tricky Dick, and LBJ, to name a few.

Beware of fraudsters

Now, we all hear the various PSAs and see the billboards – often paid for by government agencies – that warn us against scams and scamsters, against con-artists and all those evil folks. Whether it is utility frauds or Nigerian scam letters (emails), or people going around selling counterfeit goods, it seems to be a mission of governments at all levels to warn us against them.

Why?

Well, we need to remember: government hates competition. And two, seeks to distract us from the real pro practitioners of the art of the fraud and scams.

Truth from a liar?

To be tactful, John Kerry is a real piece of work. He is right up there with the Clintons, the Bushes, the Obamas, Uncle Joe (at least when he was mentally competent), and dear Kammie when it comes to political parasites feeding on the body politic.

But sometimes even people like Nixon or Kerry or your local scummy politicians speak the truth. As part of their word salad and self-serving rhetoric.

So while this recent tirade of his is what we would expect, it has some surprising truth in it:

I think the dislike of and anguish over social media is just growing and growing and growing. And it’s part of our problem, particularly in democracies, in terms of building consensus around any issue.

The Sunset Clause

For the last several decades, a lot of legislation in DC and the State capitols has included a “sunset clause,” also called a sunset rule or a sunset provision. The sunset clause is a measure within a statute, regulation or other law that provides for the law to cease to be effective after a specified date, unless further legislative action is taken to extend it.

A sunset clause is kinda like an expiration date on a product – except (supposedly) binding. We have two general types of expiration dates on food and drugs: “sell by” dates and “use by” dates. To put it another way, the manufacturer or distributor strongly urges the retailer and the buyer (consumer) to pay attention. (As does the government which often mandates that.)

Of course, there is a difference in sunset clauses. For one thing, Congress, legislatures, and the White House don’t want “consumers” (citizens and residents) to pay attention. They want the adulation of the voters and public, not the close attention. They do not want their laws, the imperial decrees we give the euphemistic name “executive order,” and various government regulations and “guidance” to expire.

Put not your trust in princes… or presidents… or congresscritturs… or bureaucrats

Rob Morse, writing from (and about) the Helene-hit hinderland of the Old South:

Why are people in North Carolina suffering after the latest storm? The answers are both obvious and unusual. We are responding to both acts of nature and acts of human nature. Both are predictable. Getting re-elected was more important than helping US citizens in need.

Irrational fears dominate American politics

Just as “war is the health of the state” so fear facilitates politicians and governments, and drives politics.

That has been the case for millennia, but this year we can really see and feel the impact. This is not a Democratic or a Republican tactic: this is a fundamental strategy for ALL politicians of all political persuasions. (Including Libertarians.)

Why?
