Why do I carry a gun?

Once in a while, someone asks me why I carry a gun… what is the reason?

I have lots of reasons.

I once had to shoot a man to save my life.

I am the only one responsible for my life and safety.

And I love my guns.

But what most people don’t seem to understand is that I don’t NEED any reason at all.

Asking for the “reason” I carry a gun is very much like asking if I have underwear on.

NOBODY’s business.

Once while getting ready to go somewhere, an ex of mine stated in exasperation – “why do you have to carry that damn thing everywhere.” After a fairly long pause while I considered the words and the motives behind them – I finally said – “In case I might want to shoot someone…”. Can’t get much more straightforward than that.

Ah… might want to amend that to say, “in case I might NEED to shoot someone…”

There have been a few times when the “want” raised its ugly head… the the NEED is always the deciding point. The need is self defense, of course.

Only NEEDED to shoot once in the last 32 years. And if I never need to do so again, it will be just fine with me.

      • I guess I was figuring that if I wanted something – the needing part had already been established…
Kinda’ like the D and A part of OODA. The needing is deciding – and the wanting is just a hair before the acting. I’ve definitely observed where people did compartmentalise wanting and needing. I’ve spent a long time working out not to want what I don’t need. Perhaps better put – I try to keep my wanting and my needing in alignment with each other. Still a work in progress!

I never, ever “want” to shoot another human being again if I can get out of it, but I might very well “need” to do so at any time.

If you’ve never had to pull that trigger and see the bleeding… I hope you never go there.

I actually had a lady ask that once in the grocery store. “Why do you have a gun? Are you expecting trouble?”

I smiled and told her that I hoped never to run into trouble, but was always prepared for it. And then I said that if I’d been actually expecting trouble, I’d have brought my rifle and at least two of my sons!

Not that they are ever really LOOKING for trouble, of course, but they would never run from any either. And they are always “prepared” as well.

I was asked why I was carrying a gun, was I expecting trouble. I said: ” If I was expecting trouble, I would be carrying my shotgun”.
