Wyoming’s rest area crisis (Part III) – concepts of liberty

Having explained the problems with rest areas and their closure in Wyoming, what can we learn from that, and what can we do to provide an essential service AND expand liberty?

Wyoming’s rest area crisis (Part II)

Last week, the State of Wyoming suddenly closed a quarter of its rest areas on Interstates and other highways. Traveling through Wyoming on Friday the 19th, we saw some immediate results as my family passed three of the closed rest areas.  All still “proudly” flying federal and state flags behind their flashing red lights and barricade gates. In part one, we discussed details of the action and the reasoning and the situation, and began talking about the role of government, government services, and other issues related to liberty.

Let us continue that discussion. Feel free to chime in.

Many of the small towns and frontier communities depend on the rest areas, when there are no businesses left nearby or only open for limited hours.  WDOT claims that only 80 truck parking spaces have been eliminated.  I don’t think that they are telling the truth: just the closed rest areas (four of the ten) I frequent have an estimated 80 truck parking spaces which are now closed.

Wyoming’s rest area crisis (Part I)

A few weeks ago, the State of Wyoming announced that a significant number of rest areas across the State were being closed permanently. The reason given was to save money; fuel excise tax revenues and sales tax revenues had dropped significantly due to the Pandemic Panic and the Lockdown – and the resulting worldwide economic collapse.

As a lover of liberty, my emotions and reasoning are very mixed in this matter. This is a good opportunity to think about and discuss socialism, government services, and the role of private businesses in past and modern societies.

Tales from the West – Crisis and conflict today

Thanks to business, my family and other business associates and I have been able to travel through several states, and it is clear that the Lockdown is far from over, even in the West.  And that economic impacts are continuing and growing.  When coupled with a brief perusal of the news (I’m still “on recess” from my usual news diet), that appears to be the case across the Fifty States and much of the planet.

I personally saw thousands of businesses still closed or with severely limited operations due to the Pandemic Panic – many hit hard NOT by government decrees but by their own corporate bosses or their masters under terms of their franchise agreements.  Far too many businesses have signs posted stating the sad fact that they are permanently out of business. This is especially true in the smaller towns.  (Most businesses in the very small rural/frontier towns in the Great Plains died a long time ago: now even the post offices and automated fuel stations – and sometimes schools – are closed for now.  And may not be able to reopen – foreclosed, bankrupted, or just unable to get necessary operating credit and capital.

Rumors of war? South Dakota?

A new rumor is spreading, as South Dakota prepares for a massively-condemned visit by Donald Trump to South Dakota’s Black Hills to see an even more-denigrated fireworks display for the Fourth of July.

The Year of the Rat

I was reminded recently that this, in the Chinese calendar, is the Year of the Rat. (I know little of the Chinese calendar except what I’ve read on the placemats of some of our favorite Chinese buffets.) Knowing nothing of the significance of these year-names, I find the name quite appropriate for the “anno horribis” that is 2020, as of the middle of June.

As far as I can tell, the rats are in the ascendancy this year. Actually, several species of rats: the Ratus Dexter (Right-wing rats) AND the Ratus Sinister (Left-wing rats); gray and brown and black – or if you prefer, red and blue and “fake” black (the falsely-named anarchists and Antifa and nihilists).

A Baker’s Dozen ™ reasons to keep your children out of “public” schools

The Lockdown has had one very strong positive benefit – even with some negatives.  Tens of millions of parents have seen their children’s schools lock their children out.  Especially the government-run, tax-funded (GRTF) institutions.  So tens of millions of children have been locked up in these close cousins to prisons for 6-10 hours a day.  According to surveys by Home School Legal Defense Association and other groups, many parents have decided that they do NOT want to send their kids back to these places of horror.

So let us consider…

Abolish the blue gangs?

In the month of June, 2020, the cry has grown louder and louder, spreading especially across the Fifty States, but into other nations as well. It is especially strong in Minnesota, Washington, and California, but can be found virtually everywhere.

Abolish the police. Defund the police. Replace the police.

Looking back the last few weeks: war on some religions

As I take a break from the constant hammer of the news on my eyes and brain, I’m looking back at a few things. One is the war on some religions – a front in the Lockdown Rebellion.

Just in case you missed them, here are just a few of the many examples of this war. It is easy to see how the Lockdown has targeted certain religious groups: various Christian and selected Jewish congregations, across the Fifty States.  Despite claims (even from judges, so-called conservatives, libertarians, and various “religious leaders”) that the decrees of the Lockdown did NOT target religion, it is pretty obvious that it has done so.
