Communism returns to the Heartland

By Nathan Barton

Colorado’s “AOC” is now on the Denver City Council, having defeated a veteran (and socialist) Democrat councilman in a runoff election last week.

As reported by Westword, an “activist” community paper, this woman (Candi CdeBaca) has a platform that is purely Communist: strongly anti-capitalist and in favor of public ownership of resources, production, and – get this – labor.

The “Nazi” Card

By Nathan Barton

It’s more and more common these days, in politics and elsewhere.  Federal, state, local level politics especially. Social controversies. Nasty playground fights.  Even divorce court.

It is the ultimate ad hominem attack: “she’s just a *^&)& Nazi.”  Or “He’s a %^&% Fascist.” Or “our opponents are just another bunch of Nazis eager to repeat everything that Adolf did.”  Often general, they can sometimes be very specific in accusations: a specific comment or opinion or action.  Sometimes just what they (the “fascists”) are wearing.

Bloody hands

By Nathan Barton

Whose hands? Whose blood?

The severe beating of Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner by North Carolina Congressman Preston Brooks in the Senate Chamber on the afternoon of 22 May 1856 is emblematic of the increasing tension between the Northern and the Southern states over the issue of slavery. The beating nearly killed Sumner and the American public’s sharply polarized response on the subject of slavery in the United States was telling. Although it would be not quite five years (12 April 1861), before fighting actually broke out on a large scale, the beating has been considered a key example of the “Breakdown of reasoned discourse” that eventually led to the War Between the States.

This was no isolated incident, as the anger between the various states and their people grew worse and worse.  As discussion became debate became argument. People of good will seemed to have backed away from even trying to keep the peace.

Government returns to its origins

By Nathan Barton

On 6 June 2019, this story appeared at the website The Political Insider. It seems that the Democratic House of Representatives is booting out God.

Democrats Are Indeed Removing ‘So Help Me God’ From House Committee Oaths

The Democrats in the US House of Representatives have removed “so help me God” from the oaths required of witnesses before Congressional Committees.  This comes despite previous denials of such, and after at least one back-pedaling incident.

Madness spikes – and not just in government

By Nathan Barton

The press (old and new media) continues to try and demonstrate (and prove) the world is going mad.  Here are just a few examples:

D-Day, 75 years ago – Part 2

By Rudyard Kipling

TOMMY

I went into a public-‘ouse to get a pint o’ beer,
The publican ‘e up an’ sez, “We serve no red-coats here.”
The girls be’ind the bar they laughed an’ giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an’ to myself sez I:
O it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, go away”;
But it’s “Thank you, Mister Atkins”, when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it’s “Thank you, Mister Atkins”, when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but ‘adn’t none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-‘alls,
But when it comes to fightin’, Lord! they’ll shove me in the stalls!
For it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, wait outside”;
But it’s “Special train for Atkins” when the trooper’s on the tide,
The troopship’s on the tide, my boys, the troopship’s on the tide,
O it’s “Special train for Atkins” when the trooper’s on the tide.

Yes, makin’ mock o’ uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an’ they’re starvation cheap;
An’ hustlin’ drunken soldiers when they’re goin’ large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin’ in full kit.
Then it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, ‘ow’s yer soul?”
But it’s “Thin red line of ‘eroes” when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it’s “Thin red line of ‘eroes” when the drums begin to roll.

We aren’t no thin red ‘eroes, nor we aren’t no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An’ if sometimes our conduck isn’t all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don’t grow into plaster saints;
While it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, fall be’ind”,
But it’s “Please to walk in front, sir”, when there’s trouble in the wind,
There’s trouble in the wind, my boys, there’s trouble in the wind,
O it’s “Please to walk in front, sir”, when there’s trouble in the wind.

You talk o’ better food for us, an’ schools, an’ fires, an’ all:
We’ll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don’t mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow’s Uniform is not the soldier-man’s disgrace.
For it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Chuck him out, the brute!”
But it’s “Saviour of ‘is country” when the guns begin to shoot;
An’ it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ anything you please;
An’ Tommy ain’t a bloomin’ fool — you bet that Tommy sees!

D-Day, 75 years ago

By Nathan Barton

The pictures are horrific. The stories, even more so.  The count of the dead is mindboggling, at least to Americans.

D-Day, Normandy Invasion, 75 years ago.  The last survivors, last veterans of that dangerous and desperate invasion are now in their 90s or beyond. Their children are usually retired by now.  Their grandchildren, for the most part, didn’t listen to their stories.  Assuming that the veterans were willing to tell any stories.

Circling the drain

By Nathan Barton

It is hard to see things deteriorate and decay.  bad enough to see the scrapes and scratches and dents on that old car that was your pride and joy a few years ago.  Even worse to open the hood and trunk and see the failing hoses and corrosion and leaks of oil and more.  But it is a reminder that everything that is manmade is going to decay, to wear out, to break down.  Without good care and careful use, the lifespan of anything that we create is very short.  And even then, exposure to the stresses of weather and use (including sunlight and wind and plants and animals) inevitably destroys most things.

The eyes of Texas are NOT upon you

By Nathan Barton

It is an example I hope is followed by many of the Fifty States.

According to a Fox News story, “Drivers in the Lone Star State are about to be seeing less red. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced Saturday evening he signed legislation that bans red light cameras across the state. House Bill 1361, authored by Republican state Rep. Jonathan Stickland, would prohibit the use of ‘photographic traffic signal enforcement systems.’”

Well, good!

Open borders, open houses

By Nathan Barton

A common issue which divides many Libertarians, and even those who are anarchists, is the issue of open borders.

There are quite a few points that are constantly argued over and over. There is no question that an essential natural right (God-given, if you please) belongs to all men and women to travel where they wish. But are there limits? Perhaps.
