End of American democracy?

Well, we are again finding something that so-called liberals and so-called conservatives seem to agree on. And both Democrats and Republicans. American democracy, like the American republic before it, has ended. According to voices on many different sides.

As people who are not lovers of “democracy” we here at TPOL probably are not shedding enough tears over this “untimely” end. Sorry, folks. But the only reason we are sorrowful and worried is that throughout history, the end of democracy has not allowed a new republic to emerge. The pattern is fairly common: democracy dies and mobs rule and chaos descends, allowing the rise of even more brutal and more powerful tyrants and warlords. Sometimes, the mob/chaos phase is bypassed, and we go straight to really nasty dictator.

Fearmongering, lying, and deception – Politics 2023

MSN recently published a teaser of an article in The Daily Beast, one of the more rabid of Woke on-line publications. (We couldn’t read the whole article because the electronic rag has an “account barrier” and the gist of the article is pretty clear.)

As we see more and more, the article is full of lies, exaggerations, twisted words and other tactics to push fear, in this case not just about GOP candidate Ramaswamy but the entire GOP. Now, we here at TPOL have little use, and less respect, for the GOP. But you don’t need to make things up to trash the party. You just need the truth.

But the Beast can’t be bothered with the truth. Consider “Two of the most significant policy ideas Ramaswamy’s constantly been pushing—rescinding birthright citizenship and elevating the voting age from 18 to 25—reveal a profound commitment to overhauling fundamental aspects of our Constitution. It’s not just about trimming budgets and reducing staff; it’s about reshaping the very core of our founding document.”

We call “garbage.” Neither “birthright citizenship” nor a voting age of 18 is (a) a “fundamental aspect” or (b) the “very core” of the United States Constitution. First, the 14th Amendment clearly states that United States citizenship, a concept which did not exist BEFORE the Amendment was proposed in 1866 and ratified in 1868, is not “birthright citizenship” as it is presently practiced and understood.

Indeed, the Beast quotes the applicable part in this article: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” (emphasis ours) It has been argued for decades that border jumpers (“illegal immigrants”), foreign nationals (such as diplomats, troops, tourists, EPW, etc.) are not subject to the jurisdiction of the FedGov. And somehow, the Union existed for 80+ years under the Constitution without having this so-called “core” idea. Also note that prior to that, Americans were citizens of their respective State as determined by the States themselves.

As for additional lies: the article repeatedly claimed that Lincoln pushed this and the sister 13th and 15th Amendments for various and sundry (and unknown at the time) reasons. The only reason for this part of the 14th was to give former slaves citizenship, after the 13th Amendment ended slavery, in 1865. Lincoln was definitely involved in the 13th Amendment (passed in Congress in January of 1865) but Honest Abe had been dead for more than a year before Congressman John Bingham of Ohio introduced the 14th Amendment.

Now, on to the second proposal, to raise the voting age from 18 to 25. This of course makes the usual Woke SJWs scream in pain, since they are pushing to lower the voting age to 16 or even younger. But as for the claim this is either a fundamental aspect or part of the core of the Constitution? We again call “garbage.” Prior to 1971 when the 26th Amendment was ratified by the States, it was the States themselves, and not the FedGov, which established the minimum voting age. Somehow, incredible though it is, these United States had survived for 183 years (1788 to 1971) without the undoubted wisdom and participation of people who had not yet turned 21. Simply amazing.

But are the ideas that Ramaswamy is proposing and pushing actually a bad idea. Both of these amendments have been pointed out (for decades) as being classic examples of public opinion and propaganda supporting increasing power of the FedGov over that of the States. After all, the States created the FedGov as their agent, their employee, and not their boss.

(The same thing is said of the 19th Amendment “giving” women the right to vote. Again, the history taught and the popular belief is completely wrong: there were many States in which women already had the vote long before 1920. And the right could have been won, State by State, much more easily than it was nationally. But without Senators and Congressmen (and women: there had already been women in Congress before the 19th Amendment!) being given the opportunity to beat their chests in victory.)

It is beyond the scope of this commentary to explain the pros and cons of both the 18-year-old voting right (or the old 21-year-old traditional voting right), tied to things like maturity levels, being productive members of society, and demonstrating personal responsibility. In the same way, the automatic “born on US soil makes you a citizen” tradition, the interpretation now enshrined in US law and regulations, has many pros and cons. But those who unreservedly support those things must understand the concepts are in no way essential to American constitutional government.

Unlike many other items in the Constitution which these Woke – and most politicians, regardless of affiliation – ignore. Things like limited powers, and retained power of States and the people ourselves.

Which is, of course, why the SJW and regressives in general pretend to respect the Constitution so much: they seek to conceal the contempt towards it which they demonstrate daily. And, of course, come up with bogus reasons to trash their political opponents.

Omelets and eggs – some thoughts on government

I believe that it was Napoleon Bonaparte who first made the callous comment that “it takes breaking eggs to make an omelet” to justify the killing and dying of warfare. It has been applied to many other situations. I am sure that the Khymer Rouge, Mao’s thugs in China, Lenin and Stalin in Soviet Russia, said something similar when starving kulaks, leading the Cultural Revolution, and cleansing Cambodia of undesirable people.

The recent decision by the Woke City of Seattle to send unarmed “crisis responders” (reported here) instead of armed police to “mental crisis calls” has triggered some thoughts. We seem to be experiencing yet another example.

Biden to imitate Canadian “beer ban” soon?

The New York Post was one of several papers to announce that Uncle Joe’s “alcohol czar” is pushing the FedGov to adopt “recommendations” that Americans limit themselves to two beers a week.

Who’d a thunk it? Uncle Joe’s regime has an “alcohol czar” now? Are shortages of booze soon to follow, as such things seem to? Prices soar?

But this is “keeping up with the Jones'” isn’t it? If Justin Trudeau, spiritual if not actual son of Fidel, is pushing it in Canada (and has been since January), then of course the FedGov and its nannies must. As the story says, currently USDA recommends two beers for men, one for women, a day. So this would theoretically reduce the level of “healthful” consumption by 86%. And Anheuser-Busch thought things were already bad!

But guidelines and recommendations by government have a way of turning into mandates. This isn’t prohibition, but… And if the CBDC and social credit scoring really comes to the Fifty States, there might be a way to try and enforce such a “guideline.” Picture your iPhone telling you, “Buddy, you just hit your limit for the week: try again next Friday.”

One comment already heard is that apparently, Uncle Joe’s handlers are trying to push Americans to rebellion.

The war on our liberties is always ramping up. What’s next? For that matter, you have to point out the war on our economy is doing well, too.

A world of corruption

A well-known (or at least well-advertised) pundit has been beating the drums for weeks about the BRICS summit being held today (22 August 2023) as I write this. The beginning of the end of the American dollar, the American economy and global dominance, overturning the world once again. And of course offering opportunities for an amazing gathering of wealth from getting gold and playing currency games to profit from chaos.

Well, little or nothing has happened yet. Or the media has collapsed faster than the world’s climate. Or Luna-25 dashing its brains out on the Lunar south pole. But even in 2023, these sorts of things do take time. Wait and see.

And in the meantime, lets talk about something else. Corruption. Corruption in government, yes, but corruption in society: in morals and churches and businesses and families.

Falling asleep at the wheel

Katie Pavlich, in a recent posting on Townhall, wrote: “President Joe Biden appeared to fall asleep during an event Monday honoring the victims of the horrific fire that ripped through Lahaina, Maui last week — potentially killing thousands of people.”

She is echoing a lot of people, asking if Hawai’i is really a “part of America” based on Biden’s actions (or rather, inaction) after the killing fires on Maui.

Her implication, and theirs as well, seems to be fear that the Pilot of American ship of state, on which the world depends, is asleep at the wheel. In the storm, and with the next storm front nearing.

Whether Uncle Joe really fell asleep on Maui is really a moot point – or a fortuitous illustration of how his regime, with nearly two years in power, is drifting aimlessly, at least as is measured by examining issues concerning many – perhaps a majority – of Americans.

Culture war expanded by MSM #2

We recently discussed how one MSM source is pushing an attempt to replace the US Constitution. It was another example of how media and other enemies of liberty are ramping up their attacks.

That is hardly the only way in which the foundations of American society are being attacked – one definition we use for “culture war.” Again, let us briefly restate: flawed though many American institutions are, they are generally much to be preferred over what the Woke, regressives enemies of liberty would impose to replace them. The culture war is a concerted effort, both violent and non-violent, to overthrow American foundations so that they can be replaced with new footings. Footings which seem to be generally opposed to liberty, self-government, and personal responsibility.

So what else?

Slam-dunk: accusations of “privilege” swell

Perhaps some Woke activists and supporters are learning that blanket accusations of “fascist” and “Nazi” don’t work as well as other tactics and labels.

We are seeing more and more the accusations of certain people and groups of having “privilege’.” Racists (that is, anyone with skin tones less than Fitzgerald Skin Type IV: see below) have “white privilege” and misogynists (that is, anyone with XY chromosomes who don’t identify as homosexual or transgender of some flavor) have “male privilege.” You get the point.

There are all kinds of “privilege” but only a relatively limited range that are viewed as bad or intolerable by our wonderfully-tolerant and situational-ethical Woke neighbors and enemies of liberty.

Can we really reform the Justice Department? Really?

In a recent commentary in The Blaze (we know, evil rag that it is) Adam Mills speaks of seven reforms needed in the US Department of Justice.

No, he didn’t suggest the obvious: changing the name to better reflect its true aim in life: “The Department of Injustice.” Or the even more obvious “Department of Jackbooted Thugs in Suits” either.

Actually, all of his suggestions make a lot of sense: he has some thoughtful observations about what a mess – and threat to liberty – the DOJ is in 2023. And he speaks highly of the need to do these things to protect the US Constitution. So he agrees with us lovers of liberty and even some conservatives. The USDJ and particularly the feebes (which he addresses directly with several of his ideas for reforms) is a threat to the Constitution. To the rule of law.

But more importantly, the feebes and the in-justice warriors of the bloated bureaucracy are a real and present threat to liberty, freedom, and justice in these Fifty States. And for that matter, the world. We need to deal with them now before they grow more arrogant and powerful. Just like the rest of the FedGov. Even tyrants can have and follow law. Immoral and unjust law, but still law. The Constitution by itself can not control tyranny and injustice: that takes more. Much more.

“But,” some protest, “it is a start, no? We have to start someplace, right?”

History tells us otherwise.

Adam, I am sorry to say that your seven reforms will not work.

The hit dog barks

An article appeared at Breitbart on Tuesday about the National Review deigning to do a review of rural Virginian Oliver Anthony’s very popular “Rich Man North of Richmond” song attacking almost everything beloved of the political and media establishment.

Dear. Oh, dear. The screed, even secondhand, immediately triggered memories of a saying shared by both my grandfathers. “The hit dog barks.” The increasingly Woke media and political powers that be understood clearly that the song wasn’t talking about Fredricksburg or Manassas – or even the soon-to-be former Fort A. P. Hill.

That elite who deem themselves masters of our States (and the world) seem very thin-skinned at times, don’t they? Or do they just rightly fear almost anything can escalate into a version of France 1789?

But it wasn’t just about DC either: NYC and Philadelphia and Boston, among others, are all north of Richmond. And filled with rich men. Far too many of them seem to have become incredibly wealthy as “civil servants” and serving in elected office. The elite, or as some put it, the technocrats.

The entire article is worth reading. And the song is worth listening to as well, if you can put up with the raw, foul language of this redheaded, redbearded hillbilly singer. (Meanwhile, expect to be “entertained” by a deluge of factoids about this guy, his family, his foibles, his community and background – and anything they can find that he has ever typed, written, said, or “liked.” Cancel culture in action.)
