Democracy – this is what we get…

Most readers know the parable of the wolves and the sheep. Democracy is a vote with two wolves and a sheep on what to have for supper. A republic is when the sheep is armed and ready to defend herself.

Some thoughts on “A view of war…”

Here are some thoughts on Margaret Figert’s article, which we published yesterday. I believe that it is a timely article, and worth spreading.

She obviously did not write that with the viewpoint that we are engaged in the great struggle now underway. This was in part my response to her original article.

Many people (and I must now admit to being one) now believe that we here in the Fifty States are in the midst of a civil war.  Margaret’s discussion in the articles touches on many reasons for that.

A view of war from the Great Plains

Editor’s Note: I am posting part of a commentary from Margaret Figert, a retired frontier newspaper publisher, writing from Valentine Nebraska, on the edge of the Sand Hills and the Great Sioux Nation. I’ll provide some comments on her commentary in the next posting.

… it’s good to be wise about how we approach autumn and this year’s coming national election.

Ramping up?

More and more I find myself agreeing with many observers. These Fifty States are engaged in a civil war.

Not (yet) a war of outright violent combat. (Although violence is increasing, initiated by both sides. Daily.)

The new elite – our masters

Nearly every day we read of yet another way in which our political masters make us worse off, while glorifying and benefitting themselves, their mentors and clients. And how deep the corruption has become. How much more arrogant, grasping, and cruel those who acts as though they were elected to do anything they want.

Flag of the City of Chicao – what are the red stars for?

Today, let us consider that fatal cesspool by Lake Michigan, Chicago. We find the current elected “massa” is actually a mistress: Lori Lightfoot, dictator of the Windy City, is indeed a “worthy successor” to the likes of the Daleys and Raum Emmanuel. And even a spiritual heir of Honest Abe, the crooked railroad and real estate lawyer who more than anyone else in the 19th Century crushed the hope of these United States.

Soma and other retro tyrannies

Many libertarian (and even a few conservative) writers have pointed out more than once that the novels 1984 and Brave New World seem to be treated more as “how-to” manuals than the dire warnings their authors intended them to be. Constantly we are being told that government “needs to do this” – which just happens to be something Huxley or Orwell described in one of their distopian science fiction novels.

We’ve just added a new instance of that. In Michigan.

When is this going to end?

Listening to the latest news and reading it on-line, this is a question Debby poses. When will the Panic and the Lockdown finally come to an end? How long will the media, the governments, the big corporations, and far too many fearful people panic and react to the Beer Flu (COVID-19)?

Seriously? A critical shortage of lawyers in Florida?

Insanity, we often hear, is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
Maybe that is Florida’s problem.

A radio news story reports that 100 attorneys in the State have signed a petition asking the Supreme Court and the Bar to allow law school graduates to immediately start practicing law without passing the bar exam and the usual ritual.

Colorado – collapse nearing?

Part of Colorado is burning. That’s not shocking or unusual. Colorado is a semi-arid region: the original grasslands and most of the montane forest and savanna are fire-climax ecosystems. Fire is an essential part of these environments.

But the fires in Colorado this year are much more than just brush and trees and grass sending clouds of dense smoke drifting with the wind. There are fires in society, fires in government.

Let me explain.

What is a dictator? (Part B)

More about dictators – and not just about dictators in (and after) the Pandemic Panic.

As I pointed out in Part A (months ago), dictators are NOT the same as tyrants. At least in the view of libertarians and others who are opposed to the evil called Statism. Tyrants are not just given something close to “absolute power” over a polity; they use and abuse that power they are given (or seize). In ways that are aggression against others and usually to gain more power, wealth, and prestige. You can be a tyrant without being a dictator.
