Even lovers of liberty can sometimes panic – SCOTUS

This last week, the Supreme Court decided NOT to hear a case against the Trump BATFE banning of bump stocks, declaring them to be “machine guns.” This refusal leaves the interpretation of the regulation (NOT a law) still in effect, making any of us who have a bump stock or anything similar potentially liable for a mere ten years in prison (minus time off for good behavior, of course).

Schooling

My parents were teachers and caught in the “public system” for many years back in the 1960s and 1970s, before my father found another career and my mother returned to private teaching (which she could do, teaching music and art). They both gave up a lot to escape the clutches of the government-run, tax-funded schools.

Congressional incivility: pots calling kettles black

“Mommy, mommy, he started it! Chuckie started it!”

The facts are pretty clear. I’ve heard the various words screamed, the various texts (or tweets or whatever) sent, and even the opinions of a half-dozen different pundits.

Why we don’t need to panic – and how to deal with those who do

See the commentary on panic over coronavirus and politics and other recent commentaries posted about panic. We don’t NEED to panic.

So what do we do?

  1. Keep ourselves healthy, with plenty of food, water, medicine, and other supplies on hand for whatever mess government causes (or fails to prevent).
  2. Keep considering others: as simple as covering your mouth with a handkerchief or tissue when you cough or sneeze, or letting someone get in line ahead of you.
  3. Keep ourselves armed for self-defense against the petty criminals that government uses to excuse their power. And against the organized, official criminals that ARE government. At the same time, be polite.
  4. Keep your ears and eyes open for con-artists, in and out of government. Call them out as needed to protect yourself and others.
  5. Don’t depend on or trust banks – central or otherwise. Or credit card companies. Or stock markets and advisors!
  6. Don’t expect government to help. Or keep promises. But keep our own promises.
  7. Don’t believe everything you hear, read, or even see – check out the real story. And tell the truth yourself.

In other words, business as usual. At least for lovers of liberty.

There are now just TWO “Plan B” alternatives

Yesterday, the not-so-Super Tuesday, supposedly Democrats had three possibilities to get rid of Trump: the three B’s: Bernie, Biden, or Bloomberg.

Today, “Mini Mike” (as Trump dismisses him) has thrown in the towel. Half-a-billion dollars down the drain (not even 1% of his net worth, apparently). He is giving up and throwing his support to Uncle Joe. Just like the last several people who dropped out have done.

Other causes of panic (other than Beer Flu)

Coronavirus (Beer flu) is not the only reason we are seeing panic.

Consider:

Wars and rumors of wars, rebellions, revolutions, elections, economic downturns, natural disasters, diseases, famines, droughts and more are with us constantly.

When it comes to politics, the rest of the world has its share of panic, both in the streets and in the halls of government and business:

  1. Canada may have ended its latest constitutional, ethnic, ethical, and political crisis. A compromise may have been reached with the hereditary chiefs of a tiny First Nations tribe in BC which will end the blockade of railroads and highways which has nearly brought the Confederation’s economy to a standstill, and even threatened starvation of farmers, ranchers, and their livestock. It has even heightened the threat of secession, not from Quebec, but from Alberta and Saskatchewan. Canada’s woes are far from resolved, so it might be natural to panic.
  2. Although now again independent from the European Union, the UK is still roiled with political problems. Not just including the new relationship with Europe and the economic impact of Beer Flu. There is fresh unrest in Scotland, more concerns in Northern Ireland, and stock market woes. No wonder many are still worried.
  3. Turkey and Russia (with its Syrian ally) have actually begun fighting each other in Syria, and NATO claims it will support Turkey as a member of NATO. A fresh round of fighting will further destroy lives and property in Syria, other parts of Mesopotamia, Turkey, and elsewhere. Is it any surprise that tens of thousands of people are seeking to flee the region for Europe?
  4. Turkey, Greece, Hungary, and other nations in Europe are sealing their borders, and “refugees” and migrants are gathering and getting angry. Worry and fear are growing and coronavirus is a good excuse for severe action. The mobs in Turkey trying to get out of there just add to the fear and panic.
  5. Meanwhile, warfare continues elsewhere, as well: Yemen, Armenia, Ukraine, and various African nations are still hot. And India and Pakistan still are on high alert with each other, North Korea is shooting more missiles in “tests” and Gaza is still throwing more rockets around. Turkey is not just involved in Syria but in Libya, where fighting continues. As if people in North Africa hadn’t already had good reasons to panic.
  6. Mexico continues to roil with its various internal wars and the cartels against each other and government. Although little reported right now up in Yankee Land, the deaths and woundings and robberies continue. Running a risk of getting beheaded surely is a reason for massive fear and panic.
  7. Greta Thunberg and her ilk are still spreading the gospel of “world gonna end in…” I think we are now down to ten years. Since most public school teachers and media are buying into this (and paying handsomely, I might add), we find that school children around the world are having nightmares and panic attacks over the world coming to an end.
  8. And of course, with Super Tuesday now behind us, more and more Democrats are in a frenzied panic about what they can do to get rid of the most evil and dangerous man in American history. (That is Donald Trump, according to Nancy Pelosi, if you hadn’t heard.)

When we put it all together, panic reigns in dozens of world capitals and major cities. Sometimes in private, and sometimes in public. And millions of people, living in remote frontier or rural areas, but especially in larger urban areas, must deal with this.

So everything is falling apart?

Well, not really.

Because to put it in another way, it is pretty much business as usual around the world. The beautiful peaceful blues and whites we see from orbit are, as normal, hiding the true state of affairs.

None of this is truly new. And somehow, incredibly, enough adults and children have survived these sorts of things – and much worse – over the centuries. Enough to reproduce and come up with new ways to solve old problems. (Even though the new ways really aren’t, most all the time. And although the supposedly new ways also create NEW problems!)

Because it isn’t what is on the outside of people that causes panic. It is what is on the inside – your ability to accept reality and deal with it. Our ability to take responsibility for our actions. To go fix things even while we whinge about them, or are quaking in our boots. And for at least some of us, it is an abiding belief – inside us – in God, and in His great gift of liberty, of freedom, of life itself.

Follow-up: Panic rules the streets and the halls of power

As discussed in my last, very brief commentary, while the DNC Bernie panic is a bit more restrained over the weekend, panic about coronavirus is ramping up.

Panic Button On Keyboard Close-up Stock Footage Video (100 ...

You and I do NOT need to panic, even while it seems that everyone is. Using our God-given liberty, accepting personal responsibility for ourselves and our families, we have nothing out of the ordinary to fear.

Weekend: Beer flu panic spikes as Bernie flu panic recedes

This weekend, with the first two deaths due to COVID-19 (Coronavirus flu, or beer flu) on American soil, panic is enveloping the Fifty States. Coupled with the 4,000-point drop in the stock market, fear is rampant.

At the same time, Uncle Joe’s victory in South Carolina has led to a relaxation of fears that Bernie “Lenin” Sanders is going to take over the Democratic Party. The DNC and the Democratic elite will be in control, after all.

The combination raises more fears, though: a half-dozen doomsayers have screeched out that Trump is doomed. That the beer flu is collapsing the economy, so that Trump will lose the election in November. And that therefore, the FedGov is doomed to … I’m not sure what, but it is gonna be bad. Or so they say.

Meanwhile, the media has taken a deep breath and launched a new set of attacks on their hated enemy, Donald Trump. He is destroying America because he is doing stupid things in appointing new spook bosses who are stupid, uninformed, and nothing but yes-men. By putting a science-hater rapid religionist (Mike Pence) in charge of coronavirus reponse – proving he wants more Americans to die. By signing an agreement with the Taliban to give Afghanistan to them and end twenty years of war.

My oh my, how a few days can change things!

Stay tuned for more, soon.

Biden and the Democratic Party

With Biden’s campaign spiraling down, the upcoming South Carolina caucus, preceding the Super Tuesday votes, is critical. Can he, just once, overcome Sanders? Can he keep enough of the old “moderate” Democratic coalition of union, blacks, and the like? Or is he doomed to lose to the nearly-octogenarian socialist from Vermont?

But if Bernie wins, it is the Democratic Party that loses. Why?

“Woke” bus lines defy Fedgov to protect border jumpers

Greyhound Lines, Inc. the largest private intercity bus line in the Fifty States has given the middle finger to DHS and ICE/CBP/Border Patrol, according to stories like this one in the Florida Times. DHS agents will no longer be allowed to board their buses to find and confront border jumpers: illegal immigrants, without prior consent by Greyhound.
