We’re back!!!

The resolution of the shutdown of ThePriceofLiberty.org is complete!  After two weeks, Mama Liberty’s work is back on-line. Thanks to many people for their help – my own lack of skill and knowledge worked against me, and they helped me figure things out.

At the same time, the temporary TheNewPriceofLiberty at WordPress has had some postings and feedback, and I plan to keep it going, or a weekly or monthly basis.  This is in addition to the 2-3 postings per week on ThePriceofLiberty.org. It will feature new, short commentaries, news of interest, responses to the community, and such things.

There will also be some changes to TPOL itself, with more shorter articles and hopefully new commentary by others. Your participation is encouraged and very much wanted in both webzines.

My family and I will continue to preserve and expand the legacy of Mama Liberty and her love of self-government, personal responsibility, and especially people.  And not just those who love liberty.

Win-win for humankind?

As I’ve pointed out before, madness seems to be growing (or at least more visible) in the Fifty States today.  Much of that is a nihilistic sort of insanity: people who are self-destructive and reject not just societal norms but what has been considered moral and even what has been considered self-interest in the past.

Ran across a news tidbit about Miley Cyrus, the daughter of Country Western singer Billy Ray Cyrus.  She joined many other Regressives, Tranzis, Environists, and Social Justice Warriors in declaring that she is going on a “baby strike” – that she will not have a baby until global climate change is stopped.

China, democracy and liberty

What do Chinese Communists fear?

The Hill some weeks ago published an opinion piece about how Red China fears democracy. Since this, of course, China and its economy, the US trade war, and the situation in Hong Kong have been in the news daily, and the article is far from stale.

Seth Cropsey’s article makes a raft of really good points, and is one of many recent compositions that exposes the frailty, the weakness, and the vulnerabilities of the Beijing regime.  Seth (a Hudson Institute type, with a Navy background) makes a good presentation.  And he recognizes the weaknesses of China itself, not just its regime.

But Seth also (and typical for the political class here in the Fifty States, of which The Hill is an integral part) does not properly distinguish between forms of government, and what the regime in China (and elsewhere) fears. (I learned better as a young Army lieutenant, but I know the Navy raises its officers much, much differently.)

Our improving planetary economy

One of the amazing things about America, about the Fifty States, is that we have done so much to reduce poverty and deal with homelessness, hunger, lack of medical care, and more DESPITE the ever-increasing burden of government.  And the parasites who live off government and the money it steals from taxpayers. Just as our economy is somehow able to survive and even thrive despite being constantly bled by the bureaucrats and their clients and masters and contractors.

This may be the case worldwide.

Criminalizing speech

I recently commented on San Francisco’s Politburo (their “Board of Supervisors”) declaring the NRA a domestic terrorist organization.

It was pointed out to me the apparent standard by which the NRA was so judged by these municipal autocrats. That standard is that the NRA supposedly promoted and encouraged people to buy and use guns to kill people. And that the NRA lobbied Congress (and other legislative bodies) to NOT pass laws to implement more gun control.

The NRA has not launched or materially supported a single act of terrorism, has not committed a single hate crime. Has not recruited people to even go out and buy guns or other weapons which might be used in acts of terror.

Our right to beverage alcohol

Is it a “right” or a “privilege” to buy and/or drink alcohol? Is that an inherent human right? Is that a right of Americans under the Constitution? Or is that a privilege granted to us by government?

And what about a “right” or a “privilege” to SELL beverage alcohol?  Or to manufacture (brew, distill, concoct, etc.) alcohol?  Human right?  Privilege?

Why? That is, why are these things a right or a privilege?  What evidence do you have to support your choice?

Welcome to the dark world of terrorist organizations

Recycling and government

In a recent commentary, I published part of an article by an economics professor, Michael Munger, about recycling and the economics of it.

Dr. Munger rightly points out that modern curbside and drop-off recycling is more a religious ritual than anything else, and that even those firms and entities involved in it are (when honest) willing to admit that.

Not ALL recycling is uneconomical, of course.
