Band-Aids and public schools

In the past several months, especially after the horrific events in Uvalde, the concept of “school safety plans” has been raised and discussed a lot.

As far as we can tell, virtually every school, public and private, from Preschool to Post-graduate institutions, has a “safety plan.” These are designed primarily to protect students, staff, and faculty from manmade threats.

Based on news stories, these plans are NOT effective. Time after time we read and watch news about some nutcase getting into a school and shooting and killing a bunch of people. Or doing it out on the playground or the parking lot. Or at a football game.

Why?

A façade of “democracy”

The next time you drive past what looks like a brick building or house under construction, stop and look carefully. Is it really a brick house, in which the brick is an integral part of the structure, supporting the roof and floors and even windows? Or is the brick a façade, installed over a wood (or steel) frame structure in lieu of metal or vinyl siding?

They may look much the same, both from the outside and inside. But they are completely different structurally. And completely different as far as being fire-resistant, storm-worthy, and even for heating and cooling. Yet brick-façade buildings are considered more valuable than vinyl-sided buildings. Because they look more sturdy, more aesthetic, more long-lasting.

It is the same with democracy. As our friends over at Paradigm (formerly Agora) point out, our beloved leaders are really really big on democracy. As Tom Woods recently pointed out, “Oh, our elites can’t get themselves enough democracy!” We are lectured 24-7 on the importance, the value, the critical need for democracy.

“Not worth a dollar”

Supposedly, annual inflation, August 2021 to August 2022, was a “mere” 8.3% here in the States. Don’t believe it. Ignoring sales prices, food prices in most places have sometimes doubled in the last year: for example, at a Safeway in Rapid City, SD today, a 24-ounce loaf of Signature Select (store brand) whole wheat sandwich bread was $2.28: a year ago it was $1.19. Do the math yourself.

“Too much government”

Listening to part of the Glenn Beck show on Thursday the 29th, we were amazed to hear a guest refer multiple times to what he saw as the reason for the current crash and burn of the stock market, the growing inflation, the supply chain chaos, and the economy in general. (We didn’t catch the name of the guest.)

“Too much government” and “too much government control.” My. And Glenn did not disagree – or try to caveat that.

This of course is not news to lovers of liberty – we’ve been preaching that fact for decades. But to hear on a national talk show? Amazing, huh? The guy went on to explain that government – in the past and now – interferes with families, with businesses, with so much of daily life that it is destroying the economy. And society. And possibly what is left of Western Civilization.

Do not become slaves of men

A guest commentary by Stuart Hall, originally published at Pistos.com, 24 SEP 2022. Primarily religious (christian) in content, it applies to all lovers of liberty, christian or not. TPOL has done some stylistic editing and made some further comments in brackets. [..]

Were you called while a slave? Do not worry about it; but if you are able also to become free, rather do that. For he who was called in the Lord while a slave, is the Lord’s freedman; likewise he who was called while free, is Christ’s slave. You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men” (1st Corinthians 7:21-23).

At first glance, these words may seem to have no practical value for us [in 21st Century America especially for non-christians]. But look a little closer.

Feral Bullies In action

The Washington Times reports that on Friday, the FBI arrested a pro-life activist in Pennsylvania for allegedly twice for “attack of a patient escort” because he shoved a pro-abortion activist to the ground twice during anti-abortion protests in Philadelphia in 2021. This is a federal crime under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act. The FACE Act makes it a federal crime to use force, intimidate or interfere with anyone because that person is a provider of reproductive health care. (Euphemism for abortion provider – not gynecologists.)

It isn’t the charges or the arrest that grates on the nerves. It is the manner in which the arrest was carried out.

The price of slavery

What is slavery?

Libertarians tend to include taxation – involuntary taxation – as a form of slavery. That is, taxes forced out of people (whether the force is actual or implied/threatened) for which nothing of worth is actually exchanged. It is also theft or stealing, but because taxation (particularly of income or sales and use taxes) demands that a person work and turn part of what they earn or profit they gain by their work: it is certainly a form of theft. Equally, since government (or others who levy taxes) are stealing a part of our lives – time earning money that could be used for our own purposes, good or bad), this is a form of slavery.

The watermelon gang

A number of prominent political commentators have recently spoken out about the dangers of Russian propaganda. In some cases, they’ve traced the Russian disinformation and propaganda pushed in the last three or four years back to the Soviet propaganda work all the way back to before World War Two.

There is considerable reason to agree with the conclusion that Russian – previously Soviet – propaganda has indeed influenced the world strongly for nearly a century. The Russians do indeed seem to be masters at the art and science.

That does not mean that their efforts are perfect, or always successful. As the last few months and the debacle (or so claimed) in Ukraine demonstrates. (Of course, the Ukrainians themselves are heirs to the Soviets and the Czars before them: indeed, Ukraine is the motherland of the Motherland: the Russian state and empire had its beginnings in Kievan Rus.) but still, Russian propaganda has a good track record dating back at least to Vladimir Lenin and the 1920s.

One of the biggest success stories in Russia’s propaganda program against the States – and the FedGov – may be the environist movement, starting during the American-Vietnamese War of the 1960s-1970s: a half-century ago.

Politics 2022 – Why governments want inflation

On Wednesday, as expected and as we were warned dozens if not hundreds of times, the Fed raised interest rates. While we here at TPOL don’t pretend to understand the reasoning – or even why the Fed should have any power to establish interest rates – we do understand why people are worried and confused. We do not know if the increasingly panic-sounding warnings are legit or not. (We’ve heard it before.)

The confusion was seen stock markets, oil markets, and other indicators bounce all over the place. To add to the confusion, our dear Uncle Joe is spouting nonsense almost constantly regarding the economy. People still refuse to accept that political figures know as little about economics, the economy, and markets as the latest popular Hollywood displayer of cleavage or hypertrophied muscles. And as of Friday the 23rd of September 2022, the American (and overseas) stock markets are tumbling, courtesy of the Fed (according to most of the “expert” talking heads).

But even we here at TPOL don’t understand the complexities, we DO understand when prices go up and up and up – and when quantities in packaging of consumer products go down and down. And when more and more shelves – especially at grocery stores – get more and more empty. Even while prices climb.

And we understand why governments love inflation. Most governments, at least. Because in 2022, governments – national and most State governments – fund their madness by borrowing money. What TPOL often refers to as “taxing the future” and probably should be called “enslaving the future.”

Memes, games, and fraud in the 2022 political climate

While we here at TPOL are working on a reduced schedule (for The Price of Liberty) and even going for hours at a time without listening to news, we can’t help hearing some. Like the accusations being made against a couple of Dixie governors by woke governors, attorneys, and talking heads.

We are, of course, talking about this rather brilliant political stunt that these Red State governors pulled: bussing border jumpers who are flooding their cities to localities that have declared themselves sanctuary cities for illegal immigrants and made it clear that they welcome any and all immigrants. Especially those fleeing political persecution.

Enter the Babylon Bee:
