Help for new gun owners

Rob Morse, over at his webzine Slow Facts is publishing a series of help articles for the millions of people who have purchased guns (many for the very first time) in the last few weeks. Please credit Rob and share this around. It is to everyone’s betterment to do this sort of sharing, and Rob is fine with it! I’ve added a few short additional comments. – Nathan

New Gun Owners in Quarantine- Doing What You Can, With What You Have, From Where You Are
by Rob Morse

In the last few months, about five million of us bought a firearm for the first time. New gun owners want to know how to keep their family safe, and armed defense isn’t obvious. In fact, Hollywood taught us to do the wrong thing at the wrong time. Becoming a safe gun owners today is more challenging than usual due to the quarantine. New gun owners what to learn how to handle their firearm safely. Let’s also talk about the legal use of lethal force, and about the fundamentals of armed defense. There is a lot we can do with what we have.

Eating their own

Acting Navy Secretary Modly has resigned, Tuesday after publicly apologizing for his “profanity-laced” vitrolic attack on the USS T. Roosevelt Captain whom he had relieved. He called the Captain either “stupid” or “naive.” And demonstrated how stupid he (Modly) was.

I’m not saying that Modly was wrong about the ship’s commander. He could have added a few more accurate words: cowardly, oath-breaking, and betraying the faith of his officers and sailors (and Marines) in him. This senior officer panicked. He was a failure in being a leader. He certainly did NOT live up to the standards and traditions of his service. The Navy, and the Navy’s sailors, deserve better. As does the nation.

Yes, he was concerned for the welfare of his men and women. But he failed to balance that welfare with his other duties. In time of war, no one could have trusted him to carry out a mission which involved risk to those same men and women, no matter how critical that mission was. He betrayed his oath, and those he led. And apparently did that for, in part, notoriety. He broke the rules by which he was expected to live. But worse, he broke the rules FOR NO GOOD REASON and for NO EFFECT. Every officer has the duty to “fall on their sword” and break the rules when there is (a) a sound reason and (b) there is some small chance of success. It was not his concern for his people that got him relieved. It was not his planning to evacuate people off the ship. It was his failure to recognize and perform his duties: to protect and defend. And if necessary, to offer up the “last full measure” – whether it was HIS life or health, or that of his entire crew – to carry out his mission.

Given the current dawning understanding of the danger China presents to the world, it is even more a concern.

But Modly is even worse. He may have said that the relieved officer was “either” stupid or naive. Modly publicly demonstrated his stupidity. And betrayed the men and women not just of the USS T. Roosevelt, but ALL of the men and women of the Navy and the Marine Corps. He demonstrated an incredibly stupid response and treated the men and women of the ship and the entire service in an appalling manner.

It wasn’t just his cursing – bad as that kind of example is. He demonstrated his inability to respond appropriately to a bad situation. He treated a man, no matter how bad his actions, in a cavalier and disgusting manner, destroying the trust of those he managed in the same way as the man he condemned. He failed to demonstrate any self-discipline. And finally, he demonstrated his incompetence.

In what is in essence a time of war, both these men demonstrate the low state into which both our “public services” and our military and naval forces have fallen. And what we see in the USS T. Roosevelt incident is just the tip of the iceberg.

A christian libertarian perspective on the drug crisis, part 2

In part 1, I discussed the libertarian philosophy, which I as a christian strongly believe in. Based on biblical teaching. I also touched on history and the current (pre-, during-, and post-COVID-19 panic) situation.

Now let us look at the current highest-priority of the War on Some Drugs. Opioids.

Apples and oranges – media spites the Fifty States

NOTE: I am not rejecting any idea that the COVID-19 is not a genuine emergency, but am discussing the ridiculous behavior of governments and the mainstream media around the world – and the panic which has gripped more and more of the people on this planet.

We are now seeing more and more people – not just libertarians – who are pushing back against the media and governments on the entire Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic and the panic and destruction caused by it.

Part of that backlash is because the media and healthcare propaganda is just getting ridiculous. Let us consider just one thing: how the media is claiming that the pandemic is disproportionately attacking the Fifty States. This is admittedly part of the continued media attack on Trump. But the ways this is used are deceptive.

A libertarian christian perspective on the drug crisis, part 1

Bear with me while I write about a christian free-market anarchist’s perspective on drugs and government (Much of the concept herein is taken from some excellent articles by Lawrence Vance (another “christian libertarian”), and other writers who love God and His great gift of liberty (second only to His gift of His Son) to us.)

With the depression and anxiety caused by the current COVID-19 panic, drug abuse is likely to uptick, even though supplies are limited more than usual. (Although I suspect that the black market for drugs is hit less hard than most legitimate business, since they are already (and have been) in a lockdown for half a century.)

Today, in 2020, millions of Americans (and people around the world) are addicted to various drugs.  In recent decades we’ve seen the marijuana “epidemic” and the meth “crisis” and the cocaine/crack episodes.  These all were responded to by a massive “War on Some Drugs,” waged by governments around the world.

Right decision – wrong reason

Note: This was delayed due to our fixation on COVID-19, but is still timely. Especially since today is apparently “bash Wyoming” day, as the news reports how the State is being attacked for not taking sufficient action to destroy their economy under the guise of fighting the pandemic.

Six years ago, the Wyoming Highway Patrol (one of the worst things about Wyoming) stole $470,000 from a man traveling through the state from Nevada to his home in Illinois. That’s right. $470,000. SIX years ago.

Business as usual – for gun-haters

Over at Bearing Arms, the attempts by “Everytown” (the anti-defense group set up as shills for Bloomberg) to justify closing of gun shops as “non-essential” by New York, Los Angeles, and other localities are demolished. Good job, Cam.

But it reminds us that panic or not, pandemic or not, trashing the economy or not, the usual haters of guns (and all liberty) are still hard at work trying to steal our liberties away. The hoplophobes and hoploclasts haven’t been laid off.

Is the novel coronavirus pandemic the end of environmentalism?

The Beer Flu panic has triggered massive changes in American (and world) society. These changes may or may not continue once the danger (and fear and panic) subsides. We have yet to see.

One of the critical areas is the environment. We have been told for two decades now that the world is coming to an end due to manmade global warming. That we are destroying the oceans. The rainforests. And more, if we do not change our practices massively.

Business as usual – for abortionists

The BBC reports that the Department of Health in England (one of the countries in the United Kingdom) will let women abort their children at home, after a telemedicine conference with a doctor. It is clear that the dangers associated with COVID-19 – and the associated panic – cannot be allowed to interfere with the serious business of killing children in the womb.

Although the DOH (and therefore the UK’s much-despised National Health Service) have many more important matters to deal with, their doctors must take time from more critical activities to review and approve the use of RU-46 or whatever pills are used, and then distract medical personnel from more urgent work to deliver the pills to the mother-soon-not-to-be. Apparently, there was some waffling back and forth.

This reminds us of Nancy Pelosi’s attempt to get restrictions on federal money being spent for abortions removed. It was part of her “essential” amendments to the 2.2-trillion dollar spending spree last week. Will she try again? No doubt.

Just a reminder – power corrupts

NOTE: This was supposed to be a commentary that didn’t deal directly with the Beer Flu Panic (COVID-19 Pandemic). But it seems to be impossible to avoid it.

Power corrupts. And the more power, the more corruption. A process we are seeing literally DAILY in DC, in virtually EVERY state capitol, and in most counties and municipalities – even the smallest – here in the Fifty States.

The process is worse overseas. Starting with China, which has exceeded its past actions at least back to the Great Cultural Revolution, to India, to Hungary, to Germany and Italy and Canada. Power is being snatched at an incredible rate – faster indeed than the novel coronavirus is spreading!
