Once upon a time… a look back

Part 1 of 2 parts

When I was growing up (late 1950’s and 1960s), things were different.

TPOL temporarily down – have to figure out how to renew domain mapping

If any reader can assist, we are trying to figure out how to renew mapping of the domain for The Price of Liberty on WordPress. Apparently, Nathan did not receive messages warning that the renewal was due on 26 February. Any help is appreciated: send to TPOLNathan@gmail.com.

Is China still a Communist nation?

As China once again is in the news – thanks to the coronavirus and the recent Phase I trade deal – let us look at that empire a bit more.

China is increasingly becoming THE bugbear of American politicians and brass-hats (Pentagon political “soldiers”). Dozens of specialty news outlets, and a few mainstream media outlets, push the threat that China presents to the FedGov, the Fifty States, and world economy and peace.

I have, for years, viewed China as an evolving but still Marxist state, molded by the murders and tyranny of Mao and his successors. Together with traditional Chinese culture and morals, and with a surprising amount of ingenuity, it has survived nearly three decades longer than its parent, the Soviet Union.

But now, I wonder… and my understanding is changing.

The China Crisis

There are very few empires left on this planet. I count three, to be precise; some might have a total of five. Those are the FedGov (USA), India, and China. Some would add France and Russia. All of those are, their predecessors (or earlier versions of themselves) in the process of falling, as happened during and after the First and Second World Wars.

Indeed, they jockey for position, as if it were a race. Right now, it seems that China may be the quickest to succumb.

Why?

Commentary #2000 for The Price of Liberty -thoughts on the prices paid

Today’s commentary is the 2000th published on WordPress, replacing Mama Liberty’s original webzine and going out to the world.

Let’s talk a bit about the prices that are paid for liberty: for gaining it, keeping it, and getting it back when it slips away. And about Mama Liberty.

Liberty and personal responsibility

Liberty is impossible without responsibility.  Personal responsibility. This is something that Mama Liberty taught and practiced for her entire life.  It is something that I strive to do, even if I feel sometimes as though I’m failing.  True lovers of liberty – libertarians – believe and try to follow this basic rule.

Unfortunately most people – including many who claim to be Libertarians – do not.

Government IS abuse

We constantly complain about the abuse we endure from government. Especially the bureaucratic regulatory agencies and bodies of political appointees and elected officials.

Colorado lawmakers consider bill requiring adequate tires ...
Ski traffic bumper-to-bumper on I-70 west of Denver in the Rockies.

Government is supposed to (and claims to) protect us from people who would hurt us, who would do evil things. This, in turn, justifies (in their eyes) government doing bad things to us.

After the 2020 elections…

Let us assume for now that Trump does win the 2020 elections in less than 10 months. That he defeats whatever Regressivist, whether it is Sanders, Biden or Warren (or even H Clinton or M Obama). And that the GOP retains the Senate and gains control of the House of Representatives.

What then? Certainly not utopia, or the glorious future that the conservative pundits and talk show hosts advocate. And definitely NOT the total collapse of the Fifty States and the destruction of the world (are we down to ten years now, for global warming to kill us all) that the Greens and others predict.

Progressivism and new prohibitions – implications for the future

Given 170 years of Progressivism, the century of history of alcohol prohibition, 80 years of (some) drug prohibition, and more, where do we stand in 2020? (This commentary continues the series, with the original postings found Here, Here, and Here.)

Liberals of today… – reposting

This short discussion from Madd Medic’s “Freedom is Just Another Word…” webzine is worth pondering. together with the recent commentaries TPOL has published on Progressivism, Prohibition, and the Social Gospel.

I’ve used the term “neo-liberal” to describe today’s progressives, but more and more refer to the by their desired results: Regressivists. They want our society, our culture, our civilization to slide back into a state of tyranny and total government (totalitarianism). One significant “sect” of modern, neo-liberals are socialists, which come in several flavors: national socialists (Nazis and Fascists and Falangists and the like), international socialists (Communists or Marxist-Leninists, Maoists, etc.), and transnational socialists (which I call Tranzis) .
Whatever we call them, they are bad.
These people call themselves “Progressive Liberals” or “Liberal Progressives.” It is part of their many attempts to spin – or bluntly, lie, their way into power.
One term that Madd Medic does not discuss is a relatively uncommon one: “Paleo-Liberals.”
As a free-market anarchist, I (Nathan) cannot agree with much that is attributed to Classical Liberalism, or its related philosophy of minarchism, which most Libertarians in the US and the UK today are. I see no justification or necessity for government to have to provide many of the services and exercise many of the powers that classical liberalism recognized as appropriate for government. Certainly not mandatory government.
