The false dawn of the French Revolution

On 14 July, the French (and some of their former colonies) celebrated Bastille Day. The French call it the “National Celebration” and it is usually considered their version of Independence Day, here in the Fifty States.

That is actually a complete misunderstanding of both that holiday and the French nation. There is really no event in American history that compares to the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789.  Certainly not the official date of adopting the Declaration of Independence by the Thirteen States, seceding from the United Kingdom and its empire.

The Democrats’ war on the Bill of Rights, Part 1

Note: Although this commentary attacks the Democratic Party, much of its membership, leadership, and supporters, please do NOT think that the Republican Party (the GOP), its leadership, much of its membership, and its supporters do NOT have their own war on the Bill of Rights, liberty, and freedom.  That is a subject for another commentary.

Most of us know that the Democratic record on “gun control” – opposition to the right to keep and bear arms” for at least the past half-century has been incredibly bad.  Even though not all call for the actual repeal of the 2nd Amendment, they try on a daily basis, across the Fifty States, to nullify and gut it.

But there is more in the Bill of Rights than our right to keep and bear arms that the majority of Democrats, and especially their leadership, want to get rid of.

Assault on democracy or assault on the truth?

USA Today, along with dozens of other mainstream media outlets, has condemned the recent SCOTUS decision on two gerrymandering cases.  USA Today, in particular, screamed that this negates “one man, one vote” and “overshadows even Bush v Gore (2000) and Citizens United (2010) in its potential erosion of modern democracy.”

Back in 1900, when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the United States, people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York to be documented. They were examined for diseases, and some were quarantined for long periods of time before they were released.

On June 7, 1776, the Continental Congress met at Philadelphia and received Richard Henry Lee’s resolution urging a declaration of independence from English rule. Five days later, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman and Robert R. Livingston were appointed to a committee to draft a declaration.

Optimism

In our land, and in our movement, there is often one critical element that is constantly in short supply.

Optimism about the future.  As we are constantly barraged by a flood of bad news and prognostications about the dim prospects for the future of our community, our state, and the world, we forget that the tens of thousands of such predictions made in the past have (for the most part) failed to come true.

And we forget how much things have improved in our society and technology – even our culture – even in the past few decades.

Liberty for all – even those who don’t want us to have it

Happy Liberty Day: on the 2nd of July, 1776, the Continental Congress approved the secession of its Thirteen member States from the British Empire. Remembering that, consider this recent conviction in the United Kingdom, where a young man has been sentenced to 4 years in jail for calling Prince Harry Windsor of being a “race traitor” and implying that Harry should be killed, as discussed in the Washington Times.
