Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-41E: Cannibals virtual and actual

By Nathan Barton

Good morning.

This is a horrible tale of how the arrogance of cops (specifically, game wardens) has virtually destroyed a family and their friends and efforts to help others.  And this is in Idaho, which reminds us that NONE of the Fifty States are free from the evils of law enforcement, and that local tyranny is a problem everywhere.  When combined with the capability of private enemies and haters to twist and use government agencies to attack us, it reminds us that no place is safe.  The blog’s title “Cannibals with Cutlery” is fitting. Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-41D: Panic and diseases of mind and body

By Nathan Barton

Good morning!

Crude oil prices are continuing to dive, nearing $80 a barrel on Wednesday, down from $95 in just a few hours, while some are predicting going as low as $60 a barrel within a few months.  Clearly, a combination of factors is driving it down, including most recently the Ebola scare.  Remember that lower crude oil prices DO mean (eventually) lower gasoline and diesel prices, but also negatives: I have several relatives whose retirement income could be greatly reduced by lower prices – and many communities (even the fabled North Dakota economy) can be harmed as well. Local Tyranny and Culture Wars – More Escalation

By Nathan Barton

Are you ready for this?

In an immoral, illegal, unconstitutional act of tyranny, the City of Houston has issued a subpoena to as many as 400 preachers in the city demanding that they submit their sermons concerning homosexuality, gender identity, and the city’s mayor.  The mayor is openly homosexual, and this is part of a fight over a new city ordinance dealing with gender identity which explicitly requires that building owners/operators allow anyone who claims to be of the “opposite sex” to use the toilets and other facilities assigned to that opposite sex.  Continue reading

Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-41C: World Wars and Home Front

By Nathan Barton

Good morning.

Around the world, we see that fighting continues everywhere: Mesopotamia and Syria continue to be roiled by the Caliphate, and the US and its allies continuing to bomb and do more harm to the ordinary people and property than to the evil “Islamic State.”  In various parts of Africa, fighting continues either between various Muslim groups (as in Libya) or between Muslims and other religious groups or governments in places like Nigeria.  Afghanistan and Pakistan continue to bleed.  But the big problem is still Ukraine and Russia. Continue reading

Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-41B: Local tyranny and economics

By Nathan Barton

Good afternoon!

I ended up with a short commentary today, as most of it was taken up by a long discussion of the growing contagion of police abuse and violence (BY police and not on police) in the Fifty States, so here are a few other stories. Continue reading

The not-good, the bad, and the really ugly (Cops) (was: Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-41A)

By Nathan Barton

Good morning! Cops on the rampage, nation wide, or so it seems from stories in the last couple of days.

An attorney has intervened against the unjustified stop of a black handyman in a wealthy DC neighborhood by cops.  And tells the cops to get out of the neighborhood.  Of course, they didn’t listen.  And won’t.

DC is bad, but as usual, New York City holds “pride” of place. Lots of news about New York Police Department and they way they care for people this week. Continue reading

Situational Awareness Part 2

In part 1, long ago now, I covered the basics of situational awareness in some specific situations, along with some simple drills to help people practice this highly important skill. Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-40E: Home Front

By Nathan Barton

Good morning.  Again a raft of cop abuse and school abuse from across the nation.  Dream of a land where peace officers are limited to night watchmen and private firms hired to investigate real crimes, and schools are competing for parents to send their children there (or come to the home).  And a land where we respect privacy and people in general, and don’t have to worry about people democratically voting to take away our liberties. Continue reading

Public Health? Private Health? (was: Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-40D)

By Nathan Barton

Public health is in the news, dominated by Ebola, but with lots of other things.  In the last twenty-four hours, thousands of articles and hundreds of thousands of words have been produced about what is happening.  Fear and panic seem to be spreading.  Here is just a taste.

Four stories relate different facts and concerns about the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Continue reading

The New Economy? Unlimited Energy

By Nathan Barton

On Friday the 3rd, Greg Guenthner over at Daily Reckoning published a good article, “You’ll Never Believe How Low the Price of Oil Can Go…” which I actually didn’t get to read until late Monday, when his immediate prediction of oil prices came to be proved correct, as oil has dropped and closed below $90, the lowest in more than 20 months, despite the fact that inflation has been galloping away otherwise.  He is reporting that it could reach $60/barrel, a 50% drop from where it has been ($90) for the past week or so and well below its highs in recent months.  That is, of course, good for Americans in general, and is primarily a result of lots of oil coming out of the ground (with LOTS of human help, of course) right here in the Fifty States: North Dakota, Texas, and elsewhere.  The nice stuff, not the nasty Alberta tar sands oil.  And decades and decades of supply of the stuff, to boot. Continue reading
