Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-40C: Stupid epidemic worse than “disease?”

By Nathan Barton

Today, the natural theme of the stories that are catching my eye seem to be stupidity on the part of government officials and policies, various and sundry people, on a wide variety of topics.  Bad as things can be, human stupidity can make them worse.

A grand jury recommends no criminal charges in the Habersham County (Georgia) SWAT raid that critically injured a toddler who spent weeks in a burn unit after a SWAT team’s flash grenade exploded near his face.  Grand juries exhibit all the symptoms of groupthink stupidity more and more.  But the alternative is worse: lawyers in black robes (Nazgul) are stupid enough to be their own committee! Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-40B: Human life – any value?

By Nathan Barton

Good morning!  Sometimes, the news just seems to be dull and boring, and today is one of those:  the news and the talk shows all seem to be Ebola and the Caliphate.  Oh, and the Supreme Court (and I really don’t want to rile my stomach by talking about the Nazgul today).  So here are a few items of interest that remind us, good and bad, that there is a world around us.  Several seem to make it natural to talk about respecting and protecting human life. Continue reading

Future Death of Government? A look back from 2020

By Nathan Barton

Looking back from 2020, what mistakes did the US make in 2000-2015? Could we have done something to avoid the catastrophic collapse of the last five years?  Thirteen items come to mind. Continue reading

No Guns?

By MamaLiberty

The anti-gun people often tell us that a criminal would simply take a gun away from you and, probably, use it to kill you instead. Continue reading

Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-40A: Hypocrisy in Government? Surely not!

By Nathan Barton

Good morning.  Is government just lying? (Again?) Or being hypocritical?  Or just being stupid?  Or all of the above?

Anger at president reaches new high as faith in government falls according to the WaPo. New polling data suggest that anger at the guy in 1600 PA and a growing distrust of big government could spell trouble for Democratic lawmakers heading into the 2014 midterm elections.  Of course, he is a lame duck, so all the Dems have to do (as the guy running for Senate here in South Dakota is doing) is distance themselves as much as possible from him.  Not that such an action is hard for politicians of any stripe.  They are just naturally hypocritical when it comes to running for office (or anything else). Continue reading

Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-39E: Weekend fears and follies

By Nathan Barton

Good morning!  On this lovely Saturday, the Home Front is just really going through convulsions, as people are really upset and worried.

We aren’t supposed to, of course: guvmint will take care of us really, really nicely, from Ebola and the Caliphate and pollution and those bad guys down the street that want to shoot us up.  They really really WILL take care of us.  Really. Continue reading

The “Do Nothing Congress”

By MamaLiberty

We only have one “representative” in the US Congress for all of Wyoming, and I’m on her website mailing list.

This week she’s writing to complain about Harry Reid, a frequent theme:

Harry Reid is desperately trying to sell the “do nothing Congress” as republicans’ fault but it was his own decision to keep the Senate from coming to the table to work on these critical issues.  We have sent the Senate many different solutions and ideas.  Harry Reid’s Response? Still nothing but crickets. Continue reading

Media: When truth counts, error and inconsistency abound

by Nathan Barton

Good morning.  Readers know that I have very little respect for the mainstream media, whether radio or television or “print” (newspapers and the leading magazines).  While I do have much respect for the alternative news media, including such folks as Drudge, Breitbart, WND, TheBlaze.com, and the many commentators out there, I am prone to call them out on issues of error, exaggeration, and over-reaction.  This commentary addresses both MSM and ANM, and once more I find myself disgusted with them. Continue reading

Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-39C: Evil is as evil does

By Nathan Barton

Good morning. On the road yesterday, so playing catch up today!

A story I’ve wanted to address shows how evil and stupid government and those who trust in it are. Connecticut governor’s Sandy Hook panel recommends new restrictions on homeschooling. Connecticut parents who have chosen to homeschool their children will be faced with a new layer of bureaucracy and state regulation if a new legislative proposal from the governor’s Sandy Hook Advisory Commission succeeds.  If anything, this recommendation and action is more evil than the usual “let’s ban all the guns” or “let’s register all the guns” – and even MORE stupid.  But as all of the stories, point out, Tranzis MUST take SOME action regardless of whether the action will really accomplish anything. Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-39B: Sanity seriously short

By Nathan Barton

Good morning.  Sanity seems to be a rarer and rarer commodity these days, doesn’t it?  Consider some of the stories in today’s news.

Man shoots bullet through his neighbor’s window, reportedly for this astounding reason: because he didn’t know how to unload it?

Mama’s Note: Now, here’s someone who should definitely NOT be handling any gun, and I’m not sure any amount of training would change that. It is hard to believe that he actually thought that pointing the gun at the neighbor’s house and pulling the trigger was an acceptable way to unload it. I smell a rat… there is more to this story, I’ll bet. Continue reading
