Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-26C: Happy Independence Day

By Nathan Barton

Good morning, and welcome to the second half of Anno Domini 2014!  As I started to write this yesterday, friends north of the border were celebrating Canada Day, the creation of the Dominion of Canada in 1867.  They didn’t want a bunch of lords and commoners thousands of miles away in London telling them EVERYthing.  Frankly, they might have been better off than having that collection of statist powermongers in Ottawa like they do now. Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-26B: Islam, Poverty, and Sports

By Nathan Barton

Here are a few stories I meant to comment on last week, still of concern. Things continue to go (depending on your view point, of course) very bad OR very good in the land of Mesopotamia, formerly known as Iraq.

Because of their larger subscriber base, Godfather Politics has to be politically correct, at least somewhat so, unlike Mama Liberty and Brad and me, or at least I assume that is why they are asking this question, “Will ISIS form the world’s first terror state?”.  We already HAVE and have HAD a good many “terror states” in the world, including the FedGov.  And I am using the root definition of “terror” which is (Merriam-Webster definition, NOT mine): “violence that is committed by a person, group, or government in order to frighten people and achieve a political goal” (although I would add “or threat of violence”).  The great historic examples are of course, the Third Reich, Soviet Union, Red China, the Japanese Empire, and the Spanish Empire (and Lincoln’s Union), but ALL the Middle Eastern countries of 2014 meet this definition.  Government IS terrorism: the “monopoly” (real or effective) use of force to directly or indirectly make people do what the Congress or Executive or Queen or Premier want them to. Baker’s Dozen: America’s Real Financial Situation, not Hillary’s fantasies (Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-26A)

By Nathan Barton

Good morning, after a lengthy and unplanned weekend with no commentary! My major comment today is in the form of a Baker’s Dozen (TM) on the Economy.

Over the past several weeks, I’ve seen a lot of whinging about comments that Hillary Clinton made concerning her family’s abysmal financial condition.  So I have put together A Baker’s Dozen ™ news items that show the Clintons and the rest of the elite are totally divorced from reality. A Bird In The Hand

By MamaLiberty

Ancient wisdom tells us that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. What’s in your hand is yours to do with as you please, but in opening your hand to grasp the two in the bush, you may well lose all of them.

Many, if not most ordinary people accept the fact that actual violent crime is not common in most places, and may even be decreasing in frequency overall. The mainstream media works very hard sensationalizing every tidbit they can find, especially if a gun happens to be involved, or “children,” and people become fearful without actually understanding either the risk or the rational response to it. Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-25D: The tyranny and stupidity of American cops

By Nathan Barton

For some reason, yesterday and today a whole raft of abusive cop stories, and stories related to cops being stupid and tyrannical popped up.  Here are a few in no particular order.

On the Guadalupe River, in Texas, famous for rafting and tubing fun, a row of Comal County Sheriff’s deputies conducts a checkpoint operation and warrantless searches for glass and Styrofoam, and sadly, most people don’t know that what they are doing is illegal. Continue reading

Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-25C: Evil regulations produce evil results

By Nathan Barton

Good morning.  Today, we can take a look at the horrific regulations crushing down on us more and more.

When was the last time you know of that someone got sick and died because their food was hauled in a semi-trailer pulled by a common carrier?  Or just got sick?  I thought so.  No one.  There are lots of ways that food can become contaminated or spoiled and make you sick when you eat it.  But of all the dozens of ways, having a dirty trailer or a poorly-operating reefer van hauling your veggies or fruit or meat is not way up on the list.  But the RISK POTENTIALLY EXISTS.  And government – no, GOVERNMENT must MUST come to the rescue and push for a zero-risk society in which NO one will die of anything but old age and boredom. Armed Teachers – School Shooters

By MamaLiberty

There are several items in the news these days about “allowing” some teachers and administrators to be armed in order to respond to “school shootings.” In fact, some schools are actively in the process of providing for this. Even more surprising is the fact that many in “law enforcement” are starting to support the idea. Continue reading

Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-25B: Threats and fears

By Nathan Barton

Good morning, as we enjoy the first full week of summer.  Much of the Fifty State will enjoy warm days and a chance of rain (in the Black Hills, thunderstorms are likely the rest of the week).  Nice, really.

For some folks, though, the summer is not so nice.  Consider what KNBC News reports about 9 year old Spencer Collins of Leawood, Kansas, who had to take down his little free library, essentially a communal bookshelf, on Wednesday. The motto of the sharing center had been “take a book, leave a book,” but Collins learned there’s a lot less give and take in city government.  Tyranny, especially local tyranny, knows no bounds. Why oh why do we put up with these petty tyrants, these control freaks? Continue reading

Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-25A: Mesopotamian Tragedy

By Nathan Barton

Good morning, unless you are one of the people suffering from the mess in “Iraq” (Mespotamia), and you are NOT having good mornings, especially if you were the judge who convicted Saddam Hussein and sentenced him to hang.  That guy is looking for his head right now, courtesy of ISIS.  Gee, the folks in DC seem to be taking this to heart, and yet… Continue reading

Corrupting Language for Profit, Power, and Fun

By Nathan Barton

Do I want to see a “capitalist” economy “reestablished” in the Fifty States? Some recent on-line articles have discussed this.  But actually (warning: heresy alert!!!), no.  I don’t want to have a capitalist economy any more than I want to have a “liberal government” or be in a “church” or participate in a “democracy.”  Yes, there is a kind of capitalism that still exists (or can exist) that is not “crony” capitalism, or corporatism, but too many people lump them all together.  But I DO want to see a true free market (economy) established.  And I do believe that (if we have to endure ANY kind of government) that I would rather have one that is classically liberal – that is, a minarchist libertarian organization (if I HAVE to have one).  And no, I’ve not become an ungodly non-believer, but I am a member of an assembly, those called-out, an ekklesia and NOT a “kirk” or meetinghouse. Continue reading
