Islamic wars come to Canada

The Islamic War has come to Canada.

On Wednesday morning, the Canadian Forces soldier standing guard at the National War Memorial in Ottawa was shot and killed by a gunman who then ran into the Parliament Building shooting, before he was killed.  For most of the day, a second gunman was believed to be involved and at large.  Following the killing of one soldier and injury of another in a vehicular homicide in Quebec, in which the driver of the killer was also killed, the region is in a panic. There was both good news and bad news from Mars this week, where one of NASA’s rovers first discovered the first macroscopic life form on the planet, and then in a tragic accident, rolled over it, killing it.  The creature appeared to be a fur-covered quadruped with a tail and sharp pointed ears.

Libertarian commentary on the news, #14-42D: People are the problem

Good morning.

As many as 1,000 potential jurors may be called to fill out questionnaires that will eventually lead to the selection of a panel that will decide the fate of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, officials said Monday.  This is, of course, ridiculous and stupid: far better to get rid of the selection process except for maybe a dozen “yes-no” questions, such as “are you related to the defendant or any of the victims or arresting officers?” and “can you understand English?”  The present process has almost destroyed the jury trial by encouraging AND ALLOWING the judge and the two attorneys (or teams) to select barely sentient jurors who are willing to be used as pawns and shills by the judge, and are often incapable of deciding what they want with their coffee. Are we supposed to be proud of how much is stolen from us?  A new record has been set: more than Three TRILLION dollars has been collected by the FedGov in one year.  3,000,000,000,000.  Amazing: equal to about 30 billion dollars about fifty years ago, but still a staggering, staggering amount of money extorted from people and businesses, through all the various inventive ways that government has figured out to slide money out of our pockets to go out and waste. Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-41D: Panic and diseases of mind and body

Good morning!

Crude oil prices are continuing to dive, nearing $80 a barrel on Wednesday, down from $95 in just a few hours, while some are predicting going as low as $60 a barrel within a few months.  Clearly, a combination of factors is driving it down, including most recently the Ebola scare.  Remember that lower crude oil prices DO mean (eventually) lower gasoline and diesel prices, but also negatives: I have several relatives whose retirement income could be greatly reduced by lower prices – and many communities (even the fabled North Dakota economy) can be harmed as well.
