Getting The Lead Out

Posted on 2014-11-04 by MamaLiberty

By MamaLiberty

I was always aware of the dangers of lead poisoning, but had not investigated how serious it can be related to shooting, and how really simple it is to prevent contamination. A recent article inspired me to do much more investigation of the potential problem, and I must say the new information has reinforced the need for the nominal precautions I’ve been taking – and spurred me to much greater efforts. I asked Nathan Barton, a specialist in hazardous waste disposal, to give his take on this topic as well. Continue reading →

Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-44B: Election day… Drones and more

Posted on 2014-11-04 by TPOL Nathan

By Nathan Barton

Good morning!  Today IS election day 2014.  There is nothing better to say about election day but the old quote:  “… an advance sale of stolen goods.”  I have little to say about it, but will note two election-related items.  First, clearly the Dems are panicked, or want to appear panicked, about the vote today. Look at their spokespeople!

Is it any wonder that Charlie Rangel is a favorite image of satire on Saturday Night Live?  He says that Republicans think that slavery is still legal. Well, I suppose he is right, but then, so do Democrats, and the rest of the statists, and even “libertarians” who believe in taxes (a bad idea) instead of truly voluntary support of governments. Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-44A: Freaking-out government

Posted on 2014-11-03 by TPOL Nathan

By Nathan Barton

Good morning! A few items from over the weekend to start this week’s commentary.  The insanity that IS government grows more obvious, as does the abusive nature of too many in government. With the election tomorrow and a couple of these stories (like the EPA one), one of the quotes for today is worth sharing: ““The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.” — Sir Winston Churchill

Mama’s Note: A “democratic republic” is the delusion that people are too stupid and evil to manage their own lives, but somehow wise and good enough to choose others from among them to do it for them. Don’t vote… The only person you can rightfully control is yourself. Continue reading →

Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-43F: Federal Government Incompetence on Parade.

Posted on 2014-11-02 by TPOL Nathan

By Nathan Barton

Good morning.  A very short final commentary for the week, following 24 hours and 800 miles of driving broken up with meetings and traffic.  Today, lets look at examples of how the FedGov demonstrates incompetence and hurts people.  This week has been “exciting” for many reasons: I notice that fuel, oil, and metals are all down in price, while the stock markets seem to be floating up and up, while wearing rose-colored glasses! Alert! Adrenalin Rush Coming

Posted on 2014-10-31 by MamaLiberty

By MamaLiberty

Unless you live in a cave somewhere, you probably have experienced a rush of adrenalin from time to time, quite possibly not too long ago. You likely didn’t give it much thought at the time, even if it was a major emergency, but you might consider doing so next time, after the threat is over.

Recently, when visiting a friend, I had to deal with a violent attack by a rooster! He came at me “out of the blue” and three times struck my upper thigh with his spurs. I’ve got the bruises to prove it. Continue reading →

Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-43E: Individual responsibility and action

Posted on 2014-10-31 by TPOL Nathan

By Nathan Barton

Good morning. Let me start with a commentary well worth reading and pondering.

It is a reminder and a call for action: The Constitution is not a self-enforcing document.  This is no news to most lovers of liberty: L. Neil Smith and Ken Royce (as well as your esteemed publisher Mama Liberty) have been pointing this out for years: our freedoms are in OUR hands: it is OUR action that defends our rights and liberties, OUR action that is necessary to destroy tyranny which is destroying us and these Fifty States.  An example, very limited, of the power of one person, is found in the next story. Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-43D: Problems with the economy?

Posted on 2014-10-30 by TPOL Nathan

By Nathan Barton

Good morning!  Economic problems have been pushed to the back burner because of Ebola and the Caliphate, but they are not going away, especially not as long as the FedGov (and other governments) continue to mess it up.

The Fifty States’ economy and abuse of business: Wyoming ranks best, New Jersey worst, for business taxes. The Tax Foundation has released its annual business tax climate index, ranking the fifty states for the strength of their tax systems for business. Continue reading →

Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-43C: Around the world.

Posted on 2014-10-29 by TPOL Nathan

By Nathan Barton

Good morning!

Around the world, government and too many organizations that have partnered with government, or become all BUT governments, continue to make a hash of matters, not carrying out the tasks that people assume that they are, and causing, frankly, more problems than they are worth.  Of course, it is hard to make people see that. Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-43B: Bureaucratic obtuseness

Posted on 2014-10-28 by TPOL Nathan

By Nathan Barton

Good morning! The incredible stupidity and obtuseness of most government bureaucrats and “civil servants” is on display this week, across the world.

Teachers, by their very nature, are NOT supposed to be too sensitive to criticism: they received so much from students and often with little or no justification.  Of course, like many other virtues of teachers, the modern, unionized teacher has totally lost their ability to deal with criticism, even something as mild as the latest cover of Time Magazine, which speaks of how difficult it is to get rid of rotten apples in the government-run, tax-funded schools.  Of course, these are precisely the teachers which Time is talking about: teachers so incompetent and uncomfortable actually teaching students that they migrate to bottom-feeders, parasites on other teachers who have been brainwashed into thinking that they must be in a union.  And that unions in 2014 do ANY good whatsoever. Libertarian Commentary on the News, #14-43A: Guns today

Posted on 2014-10-27 by TPOL Nathan

By Nathan Barton

Good morning!  Here are a few stories from the weekend or a bit older, thanks to various folks.  Mostly doing with guns in some way.

Thanks to Margaret for this and the next several stories: Holly Fisher of Charleston, West Virginia is the christian wife of an Army veteran and is a mother of three.  She recently irritated some tranzis by posting a photo of herself posing in front of a Hobby Lobby store holding a Chick-fil-A drinking cup while wearing a pro-life T-shirt. Shortly after receiving at least one death threat, she again posted a photo of herself, this time in front of an American flag while holding a Bible and an AK-47.  She’s been condemned and vilified, compared to Islamist jihadis with similar pictures.  But what has she really done?  She’s shown herself willing to stand up for liberty, for what she believes, just like many others are doing.  Was the AK-47 was a bit over the top?  Would a handgun have done just as well?
