Killing us softly…

C. S. Lewis may have said it best: “Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

Events of the last 2+ years prove the wisdom of his words. That little thing called coronavirus.

Moving to the sounds of the guns…

I am told that the statistics here in the States are pretty clear. When police forces end shooting and killing sprees, the average toll of dead is 14.3 people. When a private, armed citizen is the one who stops the killing, the death toll averages just 2.3.

We seem to have seen that happen this week in Indiana, when a 22-year-old man carrying concealed ended the would-be career of a mass murderer by killing him. Because the savior of perhaps as many as a dozen more people had his pistol with him, he put down another young man who came prepared to kill or wound dozens. So just three people (and a mad dog) died. The police showed up to manage the site. And for once, the police and others recognized and honored the man who was just doing what he thought he should do as a neighbor. “Love thy neighbor as thyself,” the Son of God taught, was the second great command. On the media reporting it, he has been dubbed the “Good Samaritan after that story of Jesus.

More about Texas and Uvalde – and the American police state

Yesterday’s commentary was and is a condemnation of the State of the former Republic of Texas. And of the County of Uvalde. And the City of Uvalde. And of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District. But we want to point out, as several have to us, that it is NOT just those specific governments that stand condemned and must be held in part responsible for the murder of 19 children. As recent videos, reports, and investigation have revealed.

The Texas Tribune explains why: “… the overwhelming majority of responders were federal and state law enforcement: 149 were U.S. Border Patrol, and 91 were state police — whose responsibilities include responding to “mass attacks in public places.” There were 25 Uvalde police officers and 16 sheriff’s deputies. Arredondo’s school police force accounted for five of the officers on the scene. The rest of the force was made up of neighboring county law enforcement, U.S. marshals and federal Drug Enforcement Administration officers.

Is Uvalde the event that brings the whole charade down?

The charade of how government “protects” us? How “taxes are the price we pay for civilization?”

Ever since that murdering madman went into a government-run, tax-funded (“public”) school in Uvalde, Texas, the questions and the revelations have be tumbling out in various ways. And with each discovery of more FACTS – not suppositions, not lies, not spin – the story becomes more and more grim.

The later, discussed in the Texas Tribune, describes AND TRIES TO EXCUSE the complete failure of our system of “public peace officers” and “law enforcement” that supposedly exists “to serve and protect” the people of the States. A brief 77-page report of investigation by the Texas State Legislature reveals incredible findings that condemn virtually EVERY level of government.

Constitution?

A recent “news story” on MSN explained why the US Constitution is so bad. And why it, and not SCOTUS should be blamed and hated for recent decisions that partially restored our right to defend ourselves by keeping and bearing arms, reduced the power of the EPA, and – at least some of us believe – rejected a supposed “constitutional right” that will save many lives.

Not that the writer and talking head (seen at the website) was reticent about bashing the Nazgul. Of course, that is something that we here at The Price of Liberty are prone to do, as well. As are many lovers of liberty, if for different reasons.

But everything in that article about how bad the Constitution is seems to be things that lovers of liberty – and especially minarchists, think are GOOD points about the Constitution.

Tyranny is a many-hued thing

In a suburb of Houston, Texas, an elderly couple is being driven from their home. No, not by BLM or the taxman or local “government” but by their local Homeowners Association (HOA).

Why? They committed a crime. What? Enslaving someone to clean their place? Attacking their neighbors? Failure to pay fees and taxes? No.

For feeding ducks. That’s right. They feed ducks, and their neighbors don’t like it. Okay! So their neighbors exercised their power as a claimed majority to take action in their HOA.

“Going viral” – more “established law” at risk?

A long time correspondent and reader alerted me several days to a newly-filed lawsuit which seems to be rapidly promoted and both praised and condemned across the nation.

Many of us have long protested that the 1934 National Firearms Act (NFA-1934) was not just unconstitutional but a massive affront to human liberty and a congressional repudiation of their supposed commitment to freedom: precisely the reason that Virginia, Kentucky and people across the States had pushed for a Bill of Rights way back in the 1700s.

Now, someone with the standing, ability, and financing available seems to be pushing for the courts to decide that.

Hard times a-comin’?

“At the end of our rope.” “The straw that broke the camel’s back.” “Enough is enough.” Do these saying seem to resemble your life today? My life today? The lives of many Americans who are lovers of liberty in this Anno Libertatis 247?

Uncle Joe, democrat officials seek to push secession

The insane extreme reaction in about 20 states to the Supreme Court overturning Roe v Wade has been demonstrated constantly in the last two weeks. Even while protesters and mobs scream that abortion has been banned across the nation and call for violence against the Nine Nazgul and the pro-life movement.

Events in the last week in DC and Colorado illustrate the intense division over abortion existing in the Fifty States. And at the same time, show that so-called “progressives” (including many national and State Democrats) are using it to FURTHER divide the country. Good or bad?

Liberty or death – and other quotes

On a quiet Sunday in 2022, as the world continues to tear itself apart around us, it is easy to get entangled in the daily affairs and fears and disasters that are our common lot on this earth.

It helps, more often than not, to recall that this has all happened before: economic collapse and destruction. Wars and invasions and getting involved where we shouldn’t. New tyrannical enactments. Pandemics and plagues, famine and starvation.

BUT… we also know that “this too shall pass.” That however bad the “temporary duty” and however drear and deadly the place that we are sent, the places we must survive, there are places that are better – however long we need to wait.
