The “messiah” and stupid government tricks
Rumsfeld: Obama Has Driven Our Country Into a Cul-de-Sac

(CNSNews.com)

Nathan: Well, I don’t think “cul-de-sac” is a good word: it implies neatness and orderliness and good planning and engineering.  Nope, he has driven the fully-loaded semi into a blind alley, all of ten feet wide and with a 20-foot radius curve halfway down its 200-foot length, and with trees giving a clearance of about 12 feet.  Of course, it is also with an incompetent driver…  And of course, Mr. Rumsfeld, this does NOT just apply to this budding disaster in Syria, but to virtually everything: debt, economy, environment, health-care, and liberty.  Enough is enough: when is it time to end this insanity?

Al-Qaida-Linked Syrian Rebels Attack Regime-Held Christian Village

(CNSNews.com)

Nathan: Aha!  NOW we know why the “messiah” and his minions like the Syrian rebels so much!  And why they are willing to kill hundreds or thousands of women, children, and the elderly to “punish” Assad, whom they once praised as a “reformer” and loved getting their pictures with.  The rebels hate and attack Christians!  Now it all makes sense!

Obama: ‘I Didn’t Set a Red Line’ on Syria

(CNSNews.com)

Nathan: Oops, maybe it is color blindness?  Green instead of red?  He tap dances pretty well, and looks even more stupid than he acts.  Or speaks, as we hear from Saint Petersburg:

Obama, from Russia, urges U.S. lawmakers to back strike on Syria

(Washington Post) ST. PETERSBURG — President Obama scrambled with senior advisers Thursday to soften resistance to a military strike against the Syrian government among U.S. lawmakers and some of Obama’s most reliable global allies.

Nathan: He matches the past and the bellicose attitude from the Kremlin more than his host Putin does.  Is there any reason NOT to doubt Putin when he calls this man a liar about Syria and who REALLY killed all those people with the gas?

Kerry: Obama Has Not Told Me What He Will Do If Congress Does Not Authorize Syria Strike

(CNSNews.com)

Nathan: Things like this are one reason that a number of folks are commenting that the “messiah” is playing this strickly improvisational, but with the skill of a typical junior high kid who wants to be a jazz musician.  Anyone who is so stupid as to NOT discuss options with the man (admittedly a not-so-smart man, but still) that is supposed to be one of his major foreign-affairs advisors is NOT going to make a successful military operation, especially since all the puppet strings right down to platoon level lead straight back to DC.  As with the bin Laden operation in Pakistan, no doubt they will be eating popcorn and drinking beer in the “war room” and telling the cruise missile controllers to “hit THAT building and not the other one.”

U.S. Action Against Syria Will Have ‘Some Teeth,’ Includes Arming the Rebels

(CNSNews.com)

Nathan: So, just killing a bunch of people as “collateral damage” to destroy stocks of chemical agents and their means of delivery is NOT enough:  we have to repeat the mistake that Reagan did in Afghanistan against the Soviets and ARM these madmen who hate the US more than they would ever hate Assad, and so we WILL have boots on the ground to provide these weapons and no doubt train them.  Fortunately, they will have the standard Muslim attitude towards target practice and maintenance: “As Allah wills.”

Kerry Claims ‘Very Broad Coalition’ on Syria, But Evidence Is Scant

(CNSNews.com)

Nathan: Ah, Johnnie-boy’s imaginary playmates.  Or maybe he is speaking of Congress, especially the Senate where the support for this stupidity crosses party lines, and more than just the usual token RINO.  (Is it any wonder that Matt Drudge would abandon the GOP?  It even sounds like Hannity and Limbaugh are ready to give up on the GOP as well: apparently Beck is on vacation all this week, but his love for Israel is go great that he probably leans to supporting an attack.

Funny – Home front – Stupid government
Deer Trail, Colorado: Clerk returning checks to buy drone hunting licenses

(Denver Post)  “There is a lot of money to be made on it, and it was going to go to the community center, and now I have to return a lot of checks,” Oldfield said. Of the town’s roughly 550 residents, Oldfield said 38 people have signed an unofficial petition opposing the measure. Eight of them appeared at the board meeting on Tuesday to fight the special election. “I quit counting (checks) because obviously the people don’t want this,” Oldfield said.

Nathan: The election is scheduled in October, but the town clerk does this? While I understand the appeal of El Neil’s “hyperdemocracy” (consensus), this rather strikes me more as arrogance on the part of the clerk (who clearly thinks the idea is stupid and embarrassing – if she didn’t want to be embarrassed, she’d get a job in Denver or Aurora or Limon and not Deer Trail: it is the “personality” of the town to do embarrassing things, and has been for 150 years).

Home front
Northern California County votes for Secession

(CBS News)

The Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 on Tuesday for a declaration of secession, the Record Searchlight of Redding reported. The vote appears mostly symbolic since secession would require approval from the state Legislature and the U.S. Congress, but supporters say it would restore local control over decision making. They want other rural counties in Northern California and Southern Oregon to join them in the creation of a new state called the State of Jefferson.

Nathan: As the story does NOT go on to point out, Jefferson State is NOT “new” but an old idea again revived, first being proposed in 1941. Wikipedia: Jefferson (proposed Pacific state).  There is good reason for them to want to secede: Northern (true Northern) California and Southern Oregon are BOTH significantly different, politically, socially, and economically, from the two states, divided by a stupid act of Congress in 1850 (no surprises there, of course).  Joining seven counties in Northeastern Colorado seeking to secede from Denver, this is a cyclic trend, but not to be totally discounted.  The problem with such secession movements is that they almost always just substitute one tyrannical government for another, instead of creating at least much more limited governments, or just doing away with the governments and allowing voluntary cooperation.

Mama’s Note: None of this will happen until people realize that nobody has any legitimate authority to “allow” this – or prevent it. The whole idea that they must have “permission” from the feds and state makes the whole thing an exercise in futility.

Abominable Act (ObummerCare)
Plenty of options under health care law, studies show

(By RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR The Associated Press) (Commentary?) Coverage under President Barack Obama’s health care law won’t be cheap, but cost-conscious consumers hunting for lower premiums will have plenty of options, according to two independent private studies.

Mama’s Note: … as long as you don’t care about freedom. Freedom for yourself or the health care professionals. As long as you don’t care about receiving goods stolen from others. The options are: would you rather be hung, shot or drowned…

Nathan: Typical for the media, of course:  they try to claim it is all about the costs and therefore can be at least partially mitigated by compromise on the part of “consumers,” while ignoring the free and voluntary choices of individual, self-governors who are first FREE people and only then consumers.  The Abominable Act sets itself up as the auctioneer in a slave market, who offers the slave (the health care providers) to hundreds of owners (patients or “consumers”) a slice at a time: an hour here and there, or a few days at a time.  The customer is not only FORCED to be a slaveowner, at least indirectly, but the price is set by the auctioneer.

Mama’s Note: What they’ll find eventually, however, is that the competent and caring providers have gone underground or quit altogether. It won’t take too long for the truth to be obvious… having “insurance” has little or nothing to do with having actual health care.

On The Other Hand

I sprained my left wrist last week and can’t even remember what happened, but the experience has given me some food for thought and reinforced some things I’ve done and taught through the years.

All my life I’ve been ambidextrous, able to do most things with either hand, but since we live in a world with mostly right hand dominant people, most things are set up and more convenient to do with the right hand. This, of course, is a problem for people with a true left hand dominance, but usually not much concern to me.

But I did notice right away that I was having trouble because I would reach for things or, especially, try to lift things with that left hand and even dropped a few of them. Not good. I hadn’t really considered how much I count on having both hands to work with until it became very painful to use the left one.

Then I went to the range and discovered I could not shoot with the left hand as I always do. Of course, I could have done so if my life depended on it, but what if it were broken and in a cast, or damaged severely some other way that prevented me from drawing and firing the gun?

That’s easy for me, I can just use the other hand. Sure, but what if I had never practiced shooting with the right hand? What if I were left hand dominant and believed I couldn’t do anything much with my right hand? What if I broke my right arm, was right hand dominant, and had never trained to use the left?

In the course of many years giving the handgun and self defense classes, I’ve only encountered a few people who insist that they “can’t” use the non-dominant hand to do anything, and most of them are hard to convince to even try shooting that way. For those who are left dominant, I suspect it’s at least partly due to the extreme pressure so many of them encountered in childhood about their left handedness, especially older folks. It used to be treated almost like a minor crime, or at least a character defect.

I don’t find quite so much resistance among the naturally right handed, but it can still be difficult to convince them to even attempt to shoot with the left hand, and a great deal of persuasion is sometimes required to get them to consider shooting with either hand alone.

But it is important to learn to do so, and to practice it consistently. The reason seems self evident, but I’ll repeat it. What happens if you hurt your dominant hand and can’t draw or fire then, even if you use both hands? If you’ve got a cast or sling or brace on your hand/arm, you will also be seen as even more vulnerable than ordinarily, I suspect.

Seems to me to be important to at least consider learning to shoot with either hand, and either hand alone. You can’t pick and choose the time or place you will be attacked, so you have to be ready for whatever comes. If you’ve never fired your gun with your non-dominant hand, or never practiced shooting with either hand alone, you are due for another trip to your friendly firearms instructor and need to add a few more things to your regular dry fire and range sessions.

I Am NOT A Victim… even with only one hand available.

Are you?

Stupid government tricks – New religions: Environism
Costa Rica bans hunting

(Huffington Post/AOL) Costa Rica on Monday became the first Latin American country to ban hunting as a sport, following an unanimous and final vote from Congress. … Under the new law, those caught hunting can face up to four months in prison or fines of up to $3,000.

Nathan: I keep reading these articles and postings about how “libertarian” Costa Rica is, and how wonderfully free it is and what a great place to live.  Seems that the Nanny State is just as bad in CR as here in the US.  Because they keep emphasizing “sport” hunting, presumably poor peons and AmerInd can hunt for subsistence, but I am not positive about that.  This illustrates the stupidity of government: they can’t enforce the laws they already have against hunting endangered and threatened species, but they want to have to enforce MORE. Stupid indeed.

War on Some Drugs
Marijuana Deaths?

(Huffington Post) Yeah, not a single person has ever died from a weed overdose. We don’t have numbers on pandas, but we’re guessing it’s about the same. According to one frequently cited study, a marijuana smoker would have to consume 20,000 to 40,000 times the amount of THC in a joint in order to be at risk of dying. … Last week, Attorney General Eric Holder announced that the federal government wouldn’t intervene as Colorado and Washington state implement plans for a system of legalized marijuana for adults. The decision opened the floodgates for other states to pursue similar legalization efforts and outraged police groups apparently not excited to see a shift away from the failed war on drugs. … In a joint letter written to Holder on Friday, law enforcement organizations warned that his move would lead to more crime, violence and even death. … Holder said in his statement that the DOJ would still prosecute individuals or entities to prevent “drugged driving.”

Nathan: This minion continues to find ways to get more power and abuse more people:  there is NOT ANY authorization for the Feds to police highway traffic, but this is just the excuse he wants for the VIPR and other DHS and DOJ agencies to strengthen the police state even more.  Turning lemons into lemonade, I guess.  As for the bogus claims of “law enforcement,” visit Tony Ryan and the folks at LEAP.CC, which has been telling the truth about drug prohibition for 11 years.  (Actually, I think Tony and I both agree that for someone to smoke (or eat) pot and go out driving is a very bad idea, as bad as redoing your makeup while driving down the road, or turning around to yell at the kids.  Still, there is absolutely no NEED (let alone authority) to make it a federal matter.  By the way, expect a federal excise tax idea to surface soon.

KERRY: Arabs Will Finance Our War – Video

(Daily Paul.com)  Secretary of State John Kerry said at Wednesday’s hearing that Arab counties have offered to pay for the entirety of unseating President Bashar al-Assad if the United States took the lead militarily.

Nathan: Ah, so we are now reduced to being mercenaries for hire, to do something that (a) shouldn’t be done, (b) doesn’t NEED to be done, (c) will result in much greater damage to the US than to anyone else – including Syria (more than likely).  What a thrill for this born-again warmonger:  he gets to have his fun and someone else pays for it.  Notice also, the lie about “no regime change” has been forgotten or conveniently tossed aside. He must figure (or rather, his boss must figure) that they have it sewn up in the National Legislature.

CRS: DOD Estimates ‘Over 75,000 Troops’ Needed to Secure Syria’s Chem Weapons

(CNSNews.com)

Nathan: That is a heavily-reinforced Corps, two divisions and two brigades and a Cav regiment, plus the support troops – IF this 75K includes the support troops off-shore and in a safe “rear” location (though I’ve got to admit “Safe” is kind of hard to figure out.  Turkey, maybe?  Or Arabia?  (Fat chance, with all the Arabs and other Muslims going ape over the “crusaders” occupying “holy ground” even at 500 miles away from Mecca and Medina…)  Let’s see: $2000/person/day for “non-combat” operations, or 150 million a day MINIMUM.  And the Saudis footing the bill?  Right!  Of course, Congress is ignoring this estimate, according to the next story.

Senate Resolution: No Boots on Ground ‘For the Purposes of Combat Operations’
(CNSNews.com)

Nathan: Ah, but just what is the definition of “combat operations?”  A whale of a lot of Uncle Sam’s boys died in ‘Nam when it was “low-intensity conflict” and they were just “advising” the ARVN troopers.  And providing “humanitarian aid” seems to have gotten a lot of shooting involved with it in places like Mesopotamia and Afghanistan and the Balkans.

And of course we know that the White House will absolutely and without ANY hesitation honor this decision, because they have a track record of five years+ of absolute honesty, transparency, and fidelity to the rule of law.  Don’t know exactly how they reconcile this with the DoD estimate, but I bet you it is a whopper of a tale!  They don’t expect the administration to honor this: it is a figleaf.  A very dead, dried up figleaf.  Of course, I can be crude and point out that Congress doesn’t NEED a very big figleaf to provide modesty…

Sebelius Describes Federal Government As ‘Our Federal Family’

(CNSNews.com)

Nathan: I can see why one radio talk show host has a nickname for her: “Cruella” (from 101 Dalmatians). That woman was all about family and how family should support one another, especially when it came to the puppies “contributing” to her new fur coat.

Rep. Johnson: Public Education ‘Being Dismantled’ by Charter Schools
(CNSNews.com)

Nathan: Obviously this Dem didn’t read the WaPo yesterday, did he?  Well, since “charter schools” ARE “public education, just with a Potemkin Village sort of operation where the puppet strings are not so visible, Of course Johnson is so stupid that he probably meant “private schools” which can accept vouchers (once a judge allows them to accept students of his color, at least if the DOJ has their way), and just doesn’t know the difference.  Does Johnson risk getting drummed out of the Liberal league by failing to read the WaPo?  Or do they give him a pass on that, since his comprehension and reading skills seem to be “challenged?”

Home front – schools and government (Libertarian Commentary on the News, #13-34B)

Schools – antidote to government-run, tax-funded (GRTF) schools
Home schooling continues to grow in US

(HSLDA) The new [NGO-published] report concludes that approximately 1,770,000 students are homeschooled in the United States—3.4% of the school-age population. NCES said that among children who were homeschooled, 68 percent are white, 15 percent are Hispanic, 8 percent are black, and 4 percent are Asian or Pacific Islander. … It shows that parents continue to choose to homeschool their children, even during a time of economic difficulty. It is especially noteworthy that homeschooling continues to grow, even though another recent NCES report showed that the number of students in private schools continues to fall. … When asked why they chose to homeschool, 91 percent of parents said it was because of a concern about the environment of other schools; 77 percent of parents said it was because of a desire to provide moral instruction; 74 percent of parents said they homeschool because of their dissatisfaction with academic instruction in other schools. When asked to select the single most important reason for homeschooling, 25 percent of parents said it was because of their concern about the environment of other schools.

Nathan: “Environment” is probably a fancy way of saying (1) children are in danger of bullying, mental and physical harm (from other students, teachers, and staff, as well as the random mass-killer nutjob), (2) exposed to indecency and immoral activities and examples, (3) taught lies and myths and propaganda (such as environmental “education”), and (4) actual physical environment: school buildings are incredibly unhealthy places, which are significant avenues for spreading disease and filled with contaminants.  Moral instruction (at least as traditionally defined) is all but prohibited in schools: where slavery is not just tolerated but promoted (all-race slavery, not black slavery), where instruction is not just immoral but anti-moral; or based on moral codes more related to the codes of the Dritte Reich or Azteca or Canaanites than civilized society.  As for academics: well, the public schools (and too many private ones) have a race between dumbing down the instruction and dumbing down the performance evaluation tests, which “instruction” keeps winning.

But WHY is homeschooling growing?  Perhaps the next stories can give us a clue.

Government Ruined, Theft Funded Schools – Liberals who are almost right
SLATE:  Schools are prisons and damaging our kids

(SLATE.com) Schools as we know them today are a product of history, not of research into how children learn. The blueprint still used for today’s schools was developed during the Protestant Reformation, when schools were created to teach children to read the Bible, to believe scripture without questioning it, and to obey authority figures without questioning them. The early founders of schools were quite clear about this in their writings. The idea that schools might be places for nurturing critical thought, creativity, self-initiative or ability to learn on one’s own — the kinds of skills most needed for success in today’s economy — was the furthest thing from their minds. To them, willfulness was sinfulness, to be drilled or beaten out of children, not encouraged. When schools were taken over by the state and made compulsory, and directed toward secular ends, the basic structure and methods of schooling remained unchanged. Subsequent attempts at reform have failed because, though they have tinkered some with the structure, they haven’t altered the basic blueprint. The top-down, teach-and-test method, in which learning is motivated by a system of rewards and punishments rather than by curiosity or by any real, felt desire to know, is well designed for indoctrination and obedience training but not much else.

Nathan: I am thrilled that a Tranzi/Liberal outfit like Slate has FINALLY made this statement: saying what many of us (and not just libertarians) have been saying for decades, going back to the beginnings of the home school movement and the increase in private schools.  BUT…

Although Slate has its head together about the evils of public schools, they do NOT have their history straight, and therefore are very likely to find the WRONG “solutions” to the problems.  As you can imagine, SLATE blames the entire mess on the Protestants.  While I am NO friend of Protestants in general, I have to point out that the history is wrong.  Most Protestants were no more happy about letting the general public (the laity or proles) have access to the Bible than did the Papists (Roman Catholics).  When the Reformation came along, there were already many hundreds (if not thousands) of small, private schools in existence, many of them family oriented, that taught people (not just children) to read and reason, which did NOT teach unquestioning obedience to authority nor blind faith in the Bible (although their reason to teach people to read was so that they could read the Bible).  These people had rejected (or never accepted) Roman Catholicism, and were not either protesting or reforming the “church” but rejecting any kind of national or state church for “just plain” christianity.  Of course, they were persecuted as much by Protestants as by Catholics.

But all the various Protestants did was take over or imitate Catholic schools.  It was not until centuries later that the schools with which we are burdened in the US today developed, and it was NOT because King Frederick the Great of Prussia was a protestant, but because he was a totalitarian tyrant.  The Prussian system of schools designed to produce “good citizens” REPLACED the American system of free, often family-based, private or community schools and teaching that was common in the United States prior to the War Between the States.  The Prussian system was brought to the Americas by the same Socialists and Communists who gave us the Republican Party and the War Between the States and Indian Reservation Socialism.  These were people like Carl Schurz and his wife, who had tried to replace Prussian (and other) monarchies with a dictatorship of the proletariat, rather than freedom and liberty.  They were able to make a “public” school system compulsory not because of religious fervor but because of hatred and bigotry towards religion: specifically (but not only) Roman Catholicism and the parochial schools (then organized much differently than 21st Century private schools).  Using the excuse or justification that Roman Catholicism would take over America, the public schools were made mandatory to compete (unfairly, of course) with family-based learning (which we call homeschooling today), parochial and other private schools: a Gresham’s Law of education: the bad drove out the good.

It was not that “willfulness was sinfulness” in the eyes of the Schurz and their followers (thugs like Horace Mann come to mind) but that willfulness would prevent the students from becoming good, productive citizens: cogs in the massive machinery of the state, whether led by a hereditary king or an elected king or some politburo.

If we do listen to Slate, we will just create another monster: all the new-age schools we can dream of will be as bad (or worse) than the current regimented public school system.  It will only be when people revolt against not just government schools but against schools controlled by liberals or Tranzis or conservatives (who do not like home schooling any more than the liberals do) that future generations of children will have the opportunity to achieve their full potential. Sadly, today not just private schools but home schools still too often accept as “for granted” that the regimentation and rewards/punishment model of the public schools.  Slate is wrong to condemn reward and punishment in learning: it is a basic part of human nature: it is the way in which it is administered in the public schools – and WHAT is rewarded and punished, that is the problem.  Education – teaching the young – is a basic part of parenting: there is no real difference between teaching a child to walk, to be “toilet-trained,” to have good manners, and to read, do math, and know history and politics.  If we do not recognize that, then Slate’s idea of making education “scientific” will simply give the education of the young over to another “government” in all but name.  It matters not if that is controlled by a legislature, a synod, a religious (or “secular”) heirarchy, or a bunch of self-appointed technocrats. Liberty is lost, and evil results.

Stupid government – Government-run, tax-funded schools
DOJ tries to trap poor black children in bad schools

(Washington Post Editorial) NINE OF 10 Louisiana children who receive vouchers to attend private schools are black. All are poor and, if not for the state assistance, would be consigned to low-performing or failing schools with little chance of learning the skills they will need to succeed as adults. So it’s bewildering, if not downright perverse, for the Obama administration to use the banner of civil rights to bring a misguided suit that would block these disadvantaged students from getting the better educational opportunities they are due. The Justice Department has petitioned a U.S. District Court to bar Louisiana from awarding vouchers for the 2014-15 school year to students in public school systems that are under federal desegregation orders, unless the vouchers are first approved by a federal judge.

Nathan: More surprises from the media today: first Slate and now WaPo.  But this is just third-party confirmation of what I and a lot of other people have been saying for years: vouchers and charter schools are just a way for government to get control (MORE control) of private schools and the desire for home schooling.  No way would WaPo support vouchers in LA if they thought it would REDUCE government control.  Of course, the WaPo has clearly decided that the current Administration is both vulnerable and unwilling to do what the Tranzis think should be done, so that is another reason to find such an attack on one of the chief minions of the “messiah.”

Libertarian Commentary on the News, #13-34A: Syria and the Imperial “messiah”

The nation continues to debate whether or not to invade Syria (yes, even an aerial or naval bombardment is still an invasion) but it seems that the current resident of 1600 PA and his toadies and masters have already decided that Syria must and will be attacked.

Just who is the enemy?  We military types have been told for more than a decade that Al Qaeda is the enemy:  that it was Al Qaeda that worked with the Taliban in Afghanistan and the Saddam regime in the former state of Iraq, to attack and kill Americans and allies, that it was Al Qaeda that coordinated the Bloody Tuesday attacks and then the shoe bombers and underwear bombers and subway bombers and more.  And yet – in Libya, it seemed that Al Qaeda was on both sides: that of the evil Gaddafi and the brave resistance against his regime.  And then in Egypt, it was first Al Qaeda and its cousin the Muslim Brotherhood that was the enemy and then the friend and then the enemy again.  Now, suddenly, in Syria, it seems that Al Qaeda, as the enemy of our enemy, is our friend.  Huh?  No wonder even young and poorly educated soldiers and officers are saying that enough is enough, and that they will refuse to fight on the side of Al Qaeda and its various arms and branches.

And just what is the “vital national interest” of America that Assad so threatens?  But that the rebels (Al Qaeda’s forces and allies) do NOT threaten?  If the rebels put Assad up against a wall (well, that is too innocent, today: today, the deposed leader is dragged in the streets and has a pole or a rifle inserted up his rectum and then (sometimes) mercifully fired, or just beaten to death like some street bum arrested by the NYPD)… if the rebels depose Assad, will Syria then no longer threaten Israel?  Will it stop meddling in its “lost province” of Lebanon?  Will it reject Baathism AND Islamicism?  Will it stop persecuting Christians and Druze and those of the wrong sect of Islam?  Don’t hold your breath.

There are NO “vital interests” that Assad and Syria can really threaten.  A fresh attack by Syria on Israel, even without really substantial US support for combat, would likely result in the liberation of Damascus from the Muslims which have illegally occupied the ancient city for nearly 1400 years.  Syria has little oil or gas or for that matter, any other really critical and hard-to-get natural resources.  If it were annexed into an Israeli Imperium, the rest of the Arab and Muslim world would provide mostly lip-service support, just as they provided that support to the “Palestinians” and to the Moros and others over the centuries. Syria has no navy to interdict the seas – not even on the scale of Persia and the oil lanes.  It has no air force to wrest control of the airways from the US and UK and Russia – or even Israel or Egypt!  It has no chokepoints in the sky or sea or land.  Assad may be an evil man, but the world is FILLED with evil national leaders, many who make Assad a benevolent ruler by comparison:  Mugabe in Rhodesia, any of a dozen apparicheks in the former Soviet Northwest Asia, Chavez’s successor in Venezuela, the other Castro in Cuba.  (Not to forget our own in DC and too many state capitals.)

DC has become a scorpion, lashing out unthinkingly in all directions, goaded or believed to be goaded by anything that moves.  Enough is enough:  the petty, pitiful, cruel, lying tyrant in DC (so much like his admired Honest Abe) must go.  And a first step in that direction is refusing to authorize and finance and otherwise support ANY attack on Syria, even that of a single WW2-vintage ground attack fighter or a single SF trooper “advising” a rebel band made up of fanatical Islamicist thugs screaming “God bless” (or so John McCain tells us) as they swarm over women, children, elders and the defenseless.

Kerry on Obama Attacking Syria: ‘He Has Right to Do That No Matter What Congress Does’

(CNSNews.com)

Nathan: This, of course, is a power that even the pre-Glorious Revolution kings of England and Scotland did not try to claim. But they were just hereditary monarchs: this man is an ELECTED monarch AND “messiah” and he is more powerful than any ten old Brit kings. You know, this and the other statements in the news recently have about led me to the conclusion that John-boy has decided to make a serious challenge to Uncle Joe to become the Chief Jester of the Imperial Court by the Potomac.  The next story is more of the same:

Obama to Congress: I Don’t Need Your Authorization for War, But Give It to Me Anyway
(CNSNews.com)

Nathan: Meanwhile the “messiah” is competing with Ringo as he beats the drums of war, and simultaneously pats himself on the back and licks the sandals of the Saudis.  Are you as impressed as I am at the talents offered by the various members of the Imperial Court by the Potomac?

Rangel: ‘I Love Obama’ But Red Line on Syria Is ‘Embarrassing’
(CNSNews.com)

Nathan: The mere words, in that strange voice of Charlie Rangel, make my skin crawl and my stomach flip and flop.  If the US DOES attack Syria, even on a shoestring budget, the body count will be 10:1 of the 1400 “civilians” supposedly killed by “pro-Assad forces” which now appear to be a mixture of civilians and Al Queda backed rebel troops (irregulars, to be sure, but shucks, even Arab nations’ REGULAR “elite” troops usually look like irregulars or just plain bandits), killed by their own stupidity in not handling basic chemical agents properly.

(The Hill) The centerpiece of President Obama’s environment push is a set of regulations to limit greenhouse gas pollution from new and existing power plants; even if the regulations are set as expected, states will not need to submit their implementation plans until 2016 — after Obama is out of the White House…

Nathan: No fooling?  Really?  What next, bypassing Congress to go to war?  Can’t imagine he’d do either of those things, but… the world is a mess, and much of it (including the Syrian Civil War) is HIS fault.  AND Bush’s.

Theft by government  Government-run, tax-funded schools
Tuition Will Keep Increasing as Long as Washington Bases Loans on College Costs

(Washington Examiner) Total student debt nearly doubled from 2007 to 2012 and now exceeds $1 trillion…

Nathan: This system works so well for college professors and staff and such that we ought to convert the K-12 (or PK-12 or even PPK-12) school to this same model.  Parents pay tuition for their children through a combination of direct government (state and federal and maybe even local) grants and loans: the schools charge whatever they want to, and so don’t have to worry about justifying tuition and cost increases.  Everybody wins!  Whee!  It is the worst combination of all worlds:  a faux “free market” and no direct government control but LOTS of strings.

Libertarian Commentary on the News, #13-33E: Media, Education, and other Parasites

Theft by government – Europe’s fall
‘Taking from the poor to give to the rich’

(La Vanguardia) A few kilometres off the coast of the European Union, the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey welcome billionaires who want to cheat the tax man. But campaigns against tax evasion have eroded these tax havens’ revenues and even they have been forced to resort to budget cuts.

Nathan: Trust the stinking mainstream media to describe avoiding taxes (that is, protecting yourself against theft) as “cheating the tax man.”  But this article accurately portrays a major problem in the world today:  the way in which governments have sprinted ahead in the constant race between the legitimate owners of wealth and labor (especially their own) and the thugs who steal them from us in the name of “The People.”  Ultimately, the entire system WILL come crashing down, either through the financial collapse of the economies involved or through rebellion and therefore physical collapse.  But until then, we all will suffer.  Except, of course, for the parasites.  I have a hard time feeling bad for the parasites (the “civil servants” and such) even in these minute tax havens.

Mama’s Note: I think BOTH the economic or the physical collapse are inevitable now. One may trigger the other, or they may both come at the same time. As with an avalanche, the only real answer is to get out of the way as fast as possible. You can’t stop the thing by any means.

Islamic wars: Arab street revolt – Syrian front – Her Majesty’s subjects
Civilians betrayed by UK vote

(The Times of London)  Parliament’s rejection of a vote calling for military action against Bashar al-Assad represents a U-turn in Britain’s tradition of standing up to dictators and a disaster for the Syrian people. Now, it falls to the US to act or jeopardise its credibility, with France as it sole European ally.

Nathan: Again, trust to the mainstream media to fail to understand and claim betrayal like this.  I applaud Her Majesty’s subjects in their ability to communicate to the “elite” of Parliament that they are sick and tired of wars and constant attacks against nation after nation by the Anglo-American axis, with made-up justifications and claims that Assad is a hideous ruler who kills his own people, while the European and American powers do the same.  As for this pitifully weird and false idea that the American “administration” (or the US, for that matter) has ANY credibility to jeopardize, well, one more silly thing before breakfast, eh?

Mama’s Note: UGG… I’d just as soon not contemplate that before breakfast, thanks. Makes me sick…

Europe’s Fall
Angela über alles

(Frankfurter Rundschau) Out on the campaign trail, the Chancellor has been stressing the track record of her government. It’s a strategy that she hopes will keep her above the political debate and steer her away from controversy.

Nathan: Compared to the current DC madhouse, and even Whitehall, Merkel DOES have a track record with a few gold stars pasted on it.  But she, and the other political leaders and parties in Germany, must sooner than later stop sitting on the fence and either fully take control of Europe or end the farce of the European Union.  The German people were willing to shoulder the burden of rebuilding the OstZone and going deep in debt for it. They are NOT willing to do so for the grandchildren of the various nations that their grandfathers conquered in 1939-42 which then had to be liberated by American and Commonwealth blood and treasure.  Sadly it is clear that just as Thatcher had a population which had been weakened and decayed beyond repair, so Merkel has a softened and easily manipulated population unwilling to stand up for the liberty that SHOULD be the patrimony of the German people, or even for der Vaterland.

Government-run, Tax-funded schools – Propaganda
What is Government?’ Elementary Students Taught It’s Your ‘Family’
(The Blaze) Fourth-grade students in Illinois are learning that “government is like a nation’s family” because it sets rules and takes care of needs such as health care and education. So says a worksheet for social studies homework that was distributed to students at East Prairie School in Skokie, Ill, complete with a drawing of Uncle Same [sic] cradling a baby that represents the citizens.

Mama’s Note: Words fail me…

Nathan: Oh, brave new world!. My, but this does smell of the totalitarians: all in the state, nothing but the state, nothing outside the state.  Free men and women will be fighting these brainwashed children or their children soon enough:  like Britain and Germany, we have sold our patrimony for a bowl of rotted porridge.

Home front – Crash of 2009
‘Double whammy’: Nursing shortage starts in the classroom

(NBC News) But just as the country needs nurses the most, a shortage of professors is curbing the capacity of nursing schools to crank out graduates with advanced degrees. “It’s a double whammy — we can’t get enough nurses, or the faculty to train them,” says Sarah Keating, a nursing professor at the University of Nevada, Reno. “It’s so tough when you see these folks coming through and they do so well on the interviews and we have to turn away one in four,” adds Keating.

Mama’s Note: So much wrong with this I don’t know where to begin. Chicken and egg in a lot of areas, but the biggest problem – of course – is the fact that there is no free market, just government insanity. Remember that I taught nursing at a community college for a few years. “Insanity” is really too tame a word to describe it. And it’s only going to get worse.

“Crank out graduates” is a fair description. Insisting on advanced degrees for every position is stupid on its face, but the sad fact is that those degrees are more and more meaningless as far as actually doing any real nursing…caring for people. Not to mention that these “students” and “teachers” so often can’t actually think for themselves, perform critical analysis, or deal with anything not in their “cookbooks.”

Sad, really sad.

Nathan: It is the same in many professions:  take teaching, where elementary teachers do NOT need even a BA or BS (except that today, a BS or BA is often graduating students with a lower skill and knowledge level than rural elementary schools did with Eighth grade graduates a century ago).  It is not about quality but about credentials: ticket punching of the worse kind.  When you spend half of your four-year college just doing remedial courses to make up for what you didn’t learn in 7-12, is it any surprise that there are not enough spaces OR professors?  And when professors are expected to spend all of six to ten hours a week actually TEACHING, no wonder the results are worthless, and there is a shortage.

Mama’s Note: Nathan, even the “remedial” courses are worthless. The STANDARDS are so low, and many necessary skills (like critical thinking) are actually discouraged… it’s no wonder that college “graduates” today are hopelessly uneducated and can’t function on a truly professional level. Some get over a lot of that when they gain real world experience, but many become entrenched in that mindset… and all too often, THEY become the teachers.

Libertarian Commentary on the News, #13-33D: Sex and children and politicians

The “messiah” – Government-run, tax-funded schools
Obama: Sex Ed for Kindergartners ‘Is the Right Thing to Do’

(CNSNews.com)

Nathan: I do believe this is the most sex-ridden administration in history. This move seems designed to keep NEA/NTF union support, justifying more staff and positions, as well as the extreme social liberals/libertines who want to encourage pedophilia, as they have homosexuality, as perfectly acceptable and indeed commendable. I understand the importance of this education. The epidemic of pregnant kindergarteners and the even worse epidemic of sexually-transmitted diseases in the 4 to 7-year-old age group MUST be stopped, and who but government can do this!?  And of course, it gives an important opportunity to teach these children both how to fully accept two (or three) mommies and two (or more) daddies, sex with teachers, and especially how to report deviants to the government, and helps inoculate them against perversions like religious and moral teaching by parents or grandparents.  So I am sure he sees this as an important initiative for the rest of his second term.

Stupid government – Culture wars: homosexual “marriage”
IRS Giving Federal Tax Benefits to All Legally Married [sic] Homosexuals, Regardless of State Law

(CNSNews.com)

Nathan: The only requirement is that the couple must have been “married” in a state which authorizes those farces, but whether the state in which they live (other than the state of fornication) authorizes them or not, the IRS will allow it.  Once more, the FedGov takes authority which it does not legally have, and implements yet another round of social engineering. As with other actions, this helps to kiss up to the Tranzi, liberal, touchy-feely sort of supporters that the White House risks losing because of Syria and its past drug stand.

War on some drugs
DOJ: Okay for States to Legalize and Tax Marijuana, but Don’t Give It to Kids
(CNSNews.com)

Nathan: This, I suspect, is their attempt to convince the rapidly defecting social liberals to again suck up to the “messiah” and whomever his appointed and anointed successor will be (Biden, Clinton, whomever…).  Sex education is okay for kids, but not pot.

Mama’s Note: The real issue is the irrational fear of cannabis and the ongoing prohibition. Children of all ages who experience serious pain are routinely given morphine and other narcotic analgesics, both in a hospital and in home settings. All medicine must be administered very carefully to children, of course, and herbs are no different than chemical medicines.

Technology
Sweden: Engineers invent “nano gas” that “instantly neutralizes” carbon pollution

(Raw Story) “The old saying ‘fighting fire with fire’ may be true or not depending upon the situation, but if someone told you the best way to fight (carbon-based) gas is with another gas, you might raise a skeptical eyebrow or two. But that’s exactly what a Swedish engineering company is claiming: successful capture of carbon from carbon-based greenhouse gases via the use of a hydrogen-based gas. Calling their gas a ‘hydro-nano’ gas (or hydrogen-atomic nano gas, HNG), the Sweden-based HydroInfra Technologies claims their technology ‘instantly neutralizes carbon fuel pollution emissions.'” (08/29/13)

Nathan: Welcome as this would be, I cannot help but think that this is a scam.  The basic facts just don’t add up.  Adding hydrogen, whatever form, to carbon produces hydrocarbons:  gases like methane(itself a greenhouse gas) – and of course of the carbon is carbon dioxide, water.  If the hydrogen is used to reduce carbon dioxide, then you get a bunch of free carbon in some form:  carbon has its uses, but its pollution potential is also quite high.  So this may be more a way to launder money than to clean up “greenhouse” gases.  I’m not rejecting it, just saying to take a very close look at it.

Mama’s Note: I read that earlier and couldn’t make any sense from it at all. Why would one wish to separate out the carbon, except for the idiots who still insist Carbon dioxide is a problem for the climate? I can’t see this as anything but a scam, whether it works or not.

Islamic wars: Arab street revolt, Syrian front
Syria: Locals claim Saudis supplied rebels behind chemical attack

(Mint Press News) “Rebels and local residents in Ghouta accuse Saudi Prince Bandar bin Sultan of providing chemical weapons to an al-Qaida linked rebel group.” (08/29/13)

Nathan: Not even the talk shows are reporting this claim.  The entire “HItchhikers Guide to the Galaxy” aspect of the chemical attack in Syria grows more obvious with this.  Of course the Saudis would love to see this: one more Arabic state reduced to utter chaos and stripped of its self-image by the Great Satan is just perfect for the Salafi.

Hoploclasts – the “messiah”
Obama changes new victim disarmament schemes

(Reuters)”The White House announced two changes to federal gun rules on Thursday to help keep weapons from criminals. … The Justice Department will write a regulation requiring background checks for people who register machine guns or short-barreled shotguns through a trust or corporation, closing one loophole on background checks. The administration also will stop allowing imports of surplus military firearms that the government has provided or sold overseas.” [editor’s note: No matter how good these ideas may seem, they are still being imposed by the fiat of the reigning emperor, not being passed into law by Congress – SAT] [additional editor’s note: And even if they were passed by Congress, they would still be completely unconstitutional, not to mention evil and stump stupid – TLK] (08/29/13)

Nathan: The headline is from Freedom Net Daily.  The two decrees (Executive Order doesn’t sound right any more) are concerning matters that (a) don’t make any sense, and (b) are NOT within the powers of the White House, no matter how liberally you interpret both “constitution” and “precedent.”  These are NOT good ideas.  The one is aimed strictly at M-1 Garands WW2 and Korean War vintage) that the US gave to the Republic of Korea and have, of course, since been replaced by more “modern” weapons.  In reality, the FedGov has made it virtually impossible to let these be returned, and their primary interest is to collectors.  As far as I know (and according to researchers) none of these which HAVE been imported have ever been used in crimes, and the claim that these are fully-automatic “military” assault weapons is a joke.  These could be used in self defense, but I figure that most have been shot out, and look best as a wall display.  But even THAT cannot be allowed by the thug in DC.  As for the so-called corporate background check loophole: that is written into statute and he cannot just arbitrarily change it.  And “closing” it accomplishes NOT a single thing:  once more, except when such weapons are stolen, I haven’t been able to find a single case where a crime was committed with such a “corporate weapon” – at least not one considered a crime by the DC criminals:  I am sure that most of the crimes committed with such weapons are in performance of contracts between the corporations and a government.

African collapse – Stupid tranzis
Zimbabwe: Can Mugabe deliver?

(Christian Science Monitor) “That Robert Mugabe and his ZANU-PF party will rule Zimbabwe for an additional five years is a near certainty now. Although the opposition, led by former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, continues to contest the results of the country’s July elections, they have found little international support. Meanwhile President Mugabe is now selecting a cabinet and preparing to assume the top post in a regional trade organization. But now that another Mugabe term seems all but assured, observers are asking if Mugabe and his party will actually confound expectations and at least begin to reform a system that has relied heavily on force to crush dissent, enact anti-democracy laws, and distort fiscal policies along old black-nationalist lines.” (08/29/13)

Nathan: It is safe to say that world – or at least the world’s politicians – care nothing about Zimbabwe or Rhodesia.  Mugabe is as bad or worse than Kim or Baby Doc and seems to be far worse than Assad or any of the Egyptians, but he is no threat to any part of the world order (new or old)and cannot be caught out on WMD or death camps.  Observers who believe that Mugabe and his murderous, thieving, torturing thugs will change should BE on drugs – that might help them face reality.

Mama’s Note: Reform? Why in the world would he even consider changing a system that has done exactly what he wants it to do so far?

Medical technology
Scientists ‘grow’ a brain in a laboratory for the first time

(Independent) Organ created from skin cells is equivalent in development to that of a human foetus at nine weeks

Mama’s Note: Oh wonderful! Now all the politicians and bureaucrats can have a brain. These have to be larger and better than the ones they were born with anyway.

Nathan: Too funny, Susan!  You can start writing for Jay Leno. But how can it be a “human brain” if is equivalent to a nine-week foetus?  After all, that foetus is NOT human, right?

Mama’s Note: Well, it is at least as “human” as what the politicians have now, isn’t it? And why can’t they have it both ways anyhow? They’ve been doing it for centuries.

Nathan: I guess so.  Didn’t the Wizard of Oz give someone a brain once?  Who represented at least some types of politicians?

Libertarian Commentary on the News #13-33C: Police State and Politics 2013

Home front: Police state
Wisconsin: Police tackle man for photographing protest

(Raw Story) “A photographer and activist was aggressively arrested at the Wisconsin Capitol on Monday during a daily singalong protest. Video of the incident uploaded to YouTube showed two police officers approaching Damon Terrell, who can be heard saying, ‘This is not illegal.’ As Terrell backed away, one of the officers grabbed him. Terrell ended up on the ground with three officers on top of him. Another video uploaded to YouTube showed four officers carrying Terrell out of the rotunda by his arms and legs.” (08/26/13)

Nathan: Sadly, this sounds pretty typical for Wisconsin and a good many other midwestern and Eastern Seaboard states.

Nazgul: Evil unbounded – Government-run, tax-funded schools
Montana: Former teacher sentenced to 30 days for raping student

(KRTV 3 News)  “Community members are calling for a protest — and for District Court Judge Todd Baugh to resign — after former Senior High School teacher Stacey Rambold was sentenced to 30 days in jail for raping a 14-year old student who later committed suicide. … Organizers of the silent protest have created a Facebook page which states: ‘In the ruling the judge claimed that the victim was ‘older than her chronological age.’ This is victim shaming at its absolute worst and Billings residents are gathering to show that we will not stand for it.'” (08/27/13)

Nathan: Can you picture this:  the girl was committed by her parents to the “care and protection” of this school district and its employees, including this pitiful excuse for a human.  After her death, the parents apparently once more accepted that the government-run court system would see justice done, only to find yet another pitiful excuse for a human, wearing the black robes of a judge.  Is there any reason that protests should be limited to peaceful calls for resignation?  Rape, especially of a child, deserves the death penalty, in particular to prevent the monster from doing it again to some other child.  Since we refuse to allow children to be armed for their own self-defense, too often this death penalty cannot be served by the would-be victim, but only in her memory. If a rapist deserves the death penalty, what punishment should be meted out to one who lets a rapist go all but scot-free?

Mama’s Note: Lots of guilt and blame to go around here. Wonder if the victim’s siblings are still being sent to government schools. If so, I wonder if there are any actual humans left in Montana who could rationally administer the required justice.

Commentary: home front – race
Let’s change perceptions of black men & boys

(Our Future, by Alexis McGill Johnson) “The 50th anniversary of the March on Washington presents a critical opportunity for this nation and the African American community to redefine the 21st Century vision for racial justice and freedom. To succeed, this must be a collective vision focused on changing individual perceptions through united action. The vision that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., set forth 50 years ago has been hijacked on both sides by people who are pushing for a colorblind vision that is simply not possible — socially or physically.” (08/27/13)

Nathan: This is an opportunity for some personal recollection and analysis.  This commentary talks about that:  but for some reason, it is apparently only non-black people that have to “redefine” the vision for “racial justice and freedom.”  Setting aside the fact that King was a Communist and at least a proto-Tranzi, his vision is based on false premises, that “united action” or collectivism is what can and should drive human interaction, rather than God-given individual liberty and morality.  All attempts to establish “racial justice and freedom” are doomed to fail: liberty, justice, and freedom do not belong to groups, but to individuals.  Individual people have the free will to make decisions, which can be moral or immoral, based on love or hate, based on self-interest or an evil altruism that is NOT at the heart of either true religion or liberty.

All King and his successors (real or claimed) have done is take the idea that all men are created equal, endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights and made it into an excuse for collectivism, group-think, and politics that divides people by race, ethnicity, wealth, income, and even sex.  I have known, admired, and been befriended by many people of many different colors, including black and latino classmates from my earliest years in school.  I have worshipped and worked with, served under and with and over, lived as neighbors, employed and been employed by people of Mediterranean, Arabic, Indian, Russian, Scandinavian, Latin American, Japanese, Filipino, Chinese, Korean, African, Latin American, AmerInd, and even French and Dutch extraction.  Being of mixed blood myself, I have seen the situation from both sides.  What I see on television, what I hear on the radio and read in the newspapers and magazines, does NOT reflect what I have known, most especially of black people (especially of those whose ancestors came over in slave ship holds).  Yes, I have met the “racial activists” and people with chips on their shoulders: black, red, brown and white of various flavors.  But they account for one in twenty, at worst. I am told that some of my ancestors owned slaves; I’ve been told that some of my ancestors, and more of my relatives WERE slaves.  Just as surely some of my relatives and ancestors were “king’s men” and served tyrants, and others fought for freedom.  Some were rich, and some were poor:  but I am not responsible for what they did and they are not responsible for what I do.

Hasan sentenced to death for Fort Hood killings

(Washington Post) “[Former] Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan was sentenced to death Wednesday for killing 13 people and wounding 32 others in a 2009 shooting spree at Fort Hood, Tex., the worst mass murder at a military installation in U.S. history. Dressed in Army fatigues [sic], Hasan, who turns 43 next month, listened impassively as the death penalty was handed down by a panel of 13 senior military officers in a unanimous decision after less than two hours of deliberations.” (08/28/13)

Nathan: It didn’t take them much time, and I’m sure that most of their time was going over things to make sure that their procedure was precisely correct, because they KNOW the political pressure the convening authority, the Military Court of Appeals, and the idiots in the Pentagon and across the Potomac will face to commute this sentence to some form of life, or perhaps even exile.  The thirteen specifications of killing SHOULD make the dead and wounded eligible for the Purple Heart, and their families for combat death benefits, but that won’t happen until the regime is replaced by something which has liberty at its heart.

Politics 2013
Poll: De Blasio Takes Commanding Lead Among Democrats In NYC Mayoral Race

(CBS, New York) Closes In On 40 Percent Support, Which Would Avoid 9/10 Primary Runoff  –  “Voters are responding to Bill de Blasio because he is the only Democrat who will boldly break from the Bloomberg years by raising taxes on the wealthy to invest in universal pre-K and after-school programs, ending racial profiling, and fighting to save community hospitals,” the de Blasio campaign said in a statement. As CBS 2′s Marcia Kramer reported, experts also have speculated that de Blasio’s stance against the city’s controversial stop-and-frisk program may be the reason for his jump in the polls. De Blasio received the endorsement of City Councilman Brad Lander (D-39th), one of the key sponsors of the bill to ban racial profiling.

Mama’s Note: While almost anyone (or anything) would be better than Bloomburg, I don’t think NYC will be any better off in the long run. Typical political strategy… both race and economic baiting to keep people fighting for part of the loot.

Nathan: The past few decades of New York City government show that the Dems and GOP are as different as Tweetledee and Tweetledum. The people and businesses of the city (except for the very most elite of both) are simply sheep to be fleeced and ultimately slaughtered: anything done for them is nothing more than keeping the flock happy and dumb, unaware and uncaring of their fate.

U.S. Gov’t Funding $313M in Mortgages—For Palestinians on West Bank

(CNSNews.com)

Nathan: It is criminal that the FedGov finances mortgages for Americans, even for poor Americans.  Even, for that matter, for veterans.  How much MORE criminal and insane is it to fund mortgages for people in a society where dominant social themes are “Death to America, the Great Satan” and which hold pep rallies when US citizens and soldiers are killed?  I wonder what the Israel-haters who claim the US is under Jerusalem’s thumb think about this one?

FLASHBACK–Joe Biden: ‘Framers Intended to Grant Congress Power to Initiate All Hostilities, Even Limited Wars’

(CNSNews.com)

Nathan: Like his former colleague and now “messiah,” anything Biden said before the middle of last week must be ignored and blamed on Bush.  The Founding Fathers (“Framers” as dotty old Uncle Joe calls them) realized the difference between failing to deny power (and funding) and actively voting to approve and fund an effort: whether it is war or moon trips or any other government activity.  Once, it was “only” limited conflicts that had this privilege, as long as the White House could get Congress to continue the insane funding levels for DoD.  Now, as we see in the ObummerCare Defunding mess, Congress apparently has given up its POSITIVE power to do anything concerning budget and spending.  Now, all they apparently can force themselves to do (and not that often) is stop the Executive Branch from spending anything it wants to.  Otherwise, spending is automatic.  Sounds like Louis XIV to me, certainly not even King George III or even Charles II did that sort of thing.

Harvard Study: No Correlation Between Gun Control and Less Violent Crime

(Breitbart)

Mama’s Note: Even the liberal, statist universities and the CDC can’t seem to fudge or refute the absolute facts…

Nathan: No, they can’t. Of course, we expect the worst from them: I first glanced at this headline and saw “no correlation between gun ownership and less violent crime.” You noted last week that the Aussie ex-PM is still whimpering about how Australia supposedly has not had any “mass killings” since they outlawed guns, conveniently ignoring the fact that overall violence and violent crime has gone up a lot. But then, it is far worse to die as one of several victims of a killer than just be the only person killed illicitly by someone.   (Of course, everyone knows that it doesn’t hurt nearly as much to die (and that dying is far less stressful) when it is due to blunt force trauma, instead of a bullet.)

Mama’s Note: Indeed, and one wonders what they consider a “mass killing.” In any case, one by one they are just as dead, regardless of the means or place. And there are always going to be more of them if the victims are helpless. Take a look at the article I just posted. I’m talking to so many women who have or want guns, yet they don’t understand (or have never thought of) much of anything beyond hitting the target. ARGGGH

New York: Stupid Criminal Alert

(The Blaze) A Brooklyn cellphone crook’s poor wardrobe choices led to his arrest when his saggy jeans tripped him up during his getaway attempt and allowed cops to chase him down, police said.  Joel Donaldson, 21, allegedly punched his victim in the face before snatching her phone at around 2:30 p.m…. A cop who was directing traffic nearby spotted the bungling bad guy’s sorry sartorial situation and hurried after him.  Donaldson made it only about a block before his pants were completely around his ankles, allowing the officer to tackle him …

Mama’s Note: Love it!

Nathan: Amazing, an NYC cop who actually caught a bad guy almost in the act!  I’m surprised that directing traffic wasn’t a higher priority.  But then, maybe he started being a cop before Nanny Bloomberg came to power.  I wonder, though, if the woman was given her cell phone back – or was it seized as evidence?

Mama’s Note: One of the things I have wondered for years is why anyone actually joins the “armed service” and becomes a veteran. If they are treated so badly, how is it possible to continue to field a voluntary army? They can’t all be that stupid or uninformed.

Preparing for Self Defense – The Next Steps

We’ve talked about why a person needs to defend themselves, and more recently we’ve covered quite a bit about gear and dry fire exercises. But there is so much more.

Those who own a gun, and especially those who carry it for self defense, need to do at least the minimum necessary to develop and keep skills relevant. A comprehensive class and no less than one range session a month is seriously minimal, but I doubt many even go that far.

Owning a gun makes you ready for self defense about as much as owning a horse makes you a cowboy.

First, have you made up your mind that you WILL survive, that you WILL fight as long as you can breathe, and that you can and WILL do whatever is necessary to the criminal in order to stop the attack? Have you decided that you are NOT a victim?

No matter how well (or how often) you shoot at targets, your gun will be of little or no use to you if you don’t develop the other skills needed for self defense. If the bad guy gets his hands on you, gets close with a gun or other weapon, or grabs your children… you have lost any advantage the hardware might have given you.

Tactical training is another step in learning gun handling. You get a physical work out, and a much better idea what it is like to be in a shooting situation. The ideal tactical training would include possible situations in your home, office, shopping and other aspects of daily life. I’ve only been to one such session and, I’m afraid it was more geared to things men and cops might encounter and wasn’t too helpful to me. So I had to come up with my own. In any case, few of us could afford either the time or money to attend one of these expanded classes very often, yet the skills are no less perishable than shooting accuracy. They need to be practiced at least some every day or as often as possible. So, even if you enjoy such classes and participate often, you might want to consider this practice on your own.

Are you ready?

Situational awareness

Are you aware of your surroundings every day, every time you hear a knock on the door, and especially every time you leave the house? Have you taught your children and others about this vital skill? Or is it simply an intellectual acceptance of an idea, but not something you practice seriously? I’ve covered the subject in detail at the link. Take some time to read it and come back.

First do the drills outlined in the Situational Awareness instructions above for a while. This will give you the basic idea and some experience doing this kind of drill as you go through your ordinary daily activities. As good as a “tactical class” might be, and as terrific as it is to go to the range, real life attacks will be very, very different… they will come out of the blue, when you least expect it, and while you are doing other things. So, it makes sense to prepare, to practice your responses WHILE you are going about your everyday life. And, since you are not apt to get much warning under the best of circumstances, you need to be prepared with as many options as possible.

Possible home invasion is probably a good place to start. You are familiar with your home, its strengths and weaknesses. You are comfortable there, and the actions of an intruder and others who might be involved are easier to imagine than they would be most anywhere else. It’s a learning process, so take it slow and build as you go along.

Think about the power of visualization.

Can you remember the dress you wore to your first Prom, your wedding, or other memorable occasion? Can you remember what you did or didn’t do? If you made a major goof or were embarrassed, I suspect you remember it and all the moves you made very well. And, if you think about it, your mind uses those memories to help you avoid similar negative experiences later.

You can use the power of your mind, the very real benefits of your imagination and memory, to prepare yourself for self defense situations. It is important to plan this some, to avoid becoming obsessed or paranoid about it, of course, but it can be used as a very effective training aid.

So, think about the way your house is laid out, access points, physical barriers and any cameras, alarms or other security measures you have. Oh, you were not thinking that they could do the job alone, were you? Time to rethink all of those things if you’ve been counting on them to keep you safe without having to be a vital part of the whole. These things can be very good, but are no earthly use without serious human involvement. And, as with all tools, they may fail. It’s important to have a backup plan, and a backup plan for that one.

Start with an easy one. Just imagine that you hear glass breaking in the back of your house. You are home alone, it is night, and you don’t expect anyone to come until morning.

What now?

Do you have a “safe room?” (Send for my book if you don’t know what that means.)

Briefly, a “safe room” is one with a reinforced door and deadbolt locks that would resist an intruder. There should be something solid and heavy you would stay behind, in case the intruder fired a gun into the door or the lock.

In that room, quite possibly your bedroom, you would have a gun (if you don’t carry it), ammunition, a cell phone, some water and other things that might be needed if you had to stay there a while. You might want to have a spare gun and ammunition in that room, even if you carry all the time.

If you don’t have a safe room, and can’t think of any way to create one, what would you do if you saw or heard signs of an intruder?

Either way, imagine what an intruder might do. You also need to think of what you might do in each case, his possible reaction, and what you might do next. What might he do that would cause you to shoot? Why wouldn’t you shoot? What would make the difference? You absolutely must have thought about this and practiced it. A mistake in the midst of an emergency could be costly, or fatal.

What would you do next? Imagine it going many different ways, concentrating on what you think might happen and how you might respond. And don’t neglect to imagine that you had to shoot someone! How would it look? How would you feel? It’s a shock and horror to any normal person, but you can’t let it destroy your awareness or your caution. The person you shot might be “playing possum” and overwhelm you if you got too close. He/she might have an accomplice or four, just waiting for you to be distracted and overcome with emotion.

And don’t lose sight of the fact that your attacker could be either a man or a woman, a teen or any other age. Imagine having to confront and defend yourself against even the nice seeming neighbor down the street, the little group of teens with their baggy pants and snotty attitudes, the lady who says she just needs to use the telephone, or almost anyone else.

Do you have a cell phone? Where is it right now? Do you carry it in your purse? Is the purse in the kitchen now? Where might an intruder gain entrance? The kitchen? That plan needs some work, doesn’t it? When would you call 911? Most areas are set up for 911, but some still are not. Do you know for sure about your location?

I don’t have a cell phone (too deaf to use one), and an intruder might cut the land line telephone first thing. I have specific plans made for that possibility. I don’t rely on getting help from outside anyway, and calling 911 FIRST is not something expected here, but it may be very different where you live.

Then, if it was possible, when would you call? What would you say to the dispatcher? Should you tell them you have a gun? The answer to all of those might be very different in various places. You need to know what is best to do long before you need to do it. And you need to practice doing it so you won’t miss things, do things to increase the risk, or say things that would hang you later.

Think about why TV and movie plots are a very poor thing to base this practice on.

Next time we’ll take to the streets and parking garages with our imaginations. But you don’t have to wait for me. Tell me about the imaging you do to prepare for self defense.
